I agree the way the shot slowly closes up on her, I remember watching it on the theaters and just feeling like it’s this in her head or is she really giving this monologue to the character. I also remember after her giving her monologue feeling tension cause you feel her monologue the beginning of her just losing it after feeling her speak that monologue
Mia Goth's performance sells this movie. She truly commits and if the film weren't so disturbing, she could've been an awards contender. Looking forward to what she is going to do in the third part of this trilogy.
I love the themes of both films, of the horror of having your youth wasted and the truly dread-inducing thought of not being able to escape it, all represented by different time periods of life. X was about old age, about Pearl having to live her remaining years knowing she didn't live a fulfilling life and Maxine dreading the prospect of befalling the same fate. Pearl was about the horror of being young and full of hope and the nightmare of watching the bridges out of the life you want to escape going up in flames. I think MaXXXine will be about that "middle period" of finding success and the horror that can come from that time as well.
Very well put, I´m so looking forward to MaXXXine, my favorite so far is `Pearl`, tragically disturbing and beautifully filmed! The `Wizard of Oz`-vibe!❤
I had so much fun watching Pearl and X back to back! My jaw was on the floor at Mia Goth's amazing performance. It's funny because the first time I saw her act, I thought she was wooden and didn't have a lot of facial expression - then I saw her in this, where she has ALL the facial expressions xD
Mia Goth's performance was one for the books. Her commitment to this role which was campy, scary, disturbing, but also very grounded in true emotion is nothing short of extraordinary
Mia Goth would be a awesome terrifying Pamela Voorhees. Excellent reaction guys, Mia Goth is such a talented actress & makes the character of Pearl batshit scary.
I love how they tied back into “X” the one random line about how old Pearl hated the blonde ones. Also, have you seen the Christmas meme where Mia Goth is the star on top of a tree saying “I’m a star!!’”? Hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
"Au revoir poor Johnny" was perfect... since he didn't take her to France..😊 soon as I was done watching this film I immediately started juggling where I'm putting it in my top 10 loved films of all time
I didn't get the Mia Goth hype after watching X, but I definitely got it after watching Pearl.. she was phenomenal and it's a great film.. I thought X was okay but Pearl is great..
@@BB13131313 part of it was how closely together X and Pearl were released - a lot of the hype was combined. Most people were able to watch the movies back to back
There's a deep story to this -- Feeding an alligator as a symbol to "feeding the dragon" when one must resist to feed and let it sleep but she made it a regular to feed the "beast" side of her. Also, there are many hints and visuals representative of how she felt trapped (How she wish her husband would vanish just so she can sense the freedom or the cage's being open for her to leave, including only if her parent were dead) (There was a scene of a bird trapped in the cage that symbolicalized capture the whole thesis of this film) (During audition, the judges were all the dead, she felt she can't escape her mortal for the dead will continue to "judge" her -- this is an extra layer of being caged) (Whenever she feel sincere in sharing or in her high time -- she starts to see her way of error but felt judged differently by the film-boy and the blonde girl...she feels betrayed or looked wrongly and she's just 'confused' for why people aren't being nice to her or being on the authentic share of feelings -- ie: to be empathic) (The ending where she's becoming very apparent in her continual feeding of the alligator and last -- when husband arrived, she already established the idea of having no freedom to leave and she's "stuck" for having to feed the alligator and having to serve husband and live with the environment that she hated -- she's in great pain for torturing herself not leaving freely and had to stay there indefintitely.) To anyone reading this, if for some reasons -- you feel empathetic or is in the same shoe -- you always have a choice, leave, get a job, reset, let the past or the anchor that haunt you be the fact of harsh reality that tainted you (it writes to your memory but it doesn't define you) and learn to move forward with what you "WANT" and it is true that you can work with what you "HAVE" but don't take her word for it and feel the freedom to roam whenever you can.
It's incredible how much of a star (ironically) Mia Goth has become in so little time due to this performance, it's one of those career turning moments. She is now gonna work with Guillermo Del Toro on his Frankenstein movie and act opposite Mahershala Ali on Blade. She may not have gotten an Oscar nomination for this, but she surely will soon enough!
Mia is soooo good. I first saw her in suspiria and since then I’m always excited to see her in another film. She deserved the oscar nomination for this, just like Toni Collette deserved it for hereditary, but oh well, we know how they are when it comes to horror.
Movie of the year for me - hands down. Was fortunate enough to see this at the local cinema on their largest screen and it was spellbinding. Beautifully made, jet black humour, and just the right amount of horror. Mia Goth is astonishing. I for one felt sorry for Pearl to a degree, and without Mia's performance I'm not sure I would have. It does make X a far more interesting watch now - not that I disliked X at all, but this really enriches it in a way most prequels do not. Can't wait to see what MaXXXine throws at us!
That is one twisted movie. Pearl makes Alex from Fatal Attraction look like a perfectly sane person. Next you should definitely check out Orca (1977), Deep Blue Sea (1999) and maybe Serial Mom.
Really good film, but i prefer X. Mia goth’s acting is phenomenal in this tho. The end confession monologue she gives at the end is the best scene in the movie. PLEASE rewatch X now that you have seen pearl, it makes it even better!! Can’t wait for the third and final instalment’maxXxine’
Ti West is my favourite horror director of this century, easily. My favourite is The Innkeepers, which has really low score on IMDB but I just love it. Pearl comes second and The House of the Devil captures the late 70s / early 80s vibe perfectly.
With X, Pearl, and the upcoming Maxxxine, if at all is on par, will be destined to become the horror trilogy of all time! Please check out Ti West's 'House of the Devil'
One of the best horror movies I've seen ever. There are many comments saying this and it's pretty banal at this point but Mia's acting here deserves an oscar nomination for best actress and the movie as well, is honestly good but Mia's acting brought home the bacon for me.
Many thanks to Tom & Shaun! 🐊 I love this one... and I'm very excited for the sequel MAXXXINE (release date unspecified, but probably 2024). #CinemaRule #TiWest #Pearl #PearlMovie
I agree with you guys, this is as close to a 10 for me as can be! It leaved an eerie feeling for a long time.. Mia Goth is an incredible actress, though the awful crimes Pearl did you can't help almost feeling sorry for her childlike inner self. I love stylistic movies like this and `Last Night In Soho`!
I thought this was West's masterpiece. It was remarkably shot with some horrific images (the shot of the burnt, skeletal mother in the audience). I think your scores reflected this fairly .
Speaking of Ty West, you guys should watch You're Next. He's in that movie and I'm not sure what he had to do with it beyond that but it's a great thriller.
Rewatch X after having seen PEARL, you will appreciate it more. But having said that, while X is great, PEARL is a masterpiece. Stoked for MaXXXine. Y'all are awesome!
To me they are both good in different ways the fact both of them are set in different time periods, have different characters and have different characters makes them unique films where the cool thing is you watch either one depending on your mood and still enjoy both for what it is
Ti west also did house of the devil, my all time favorite horror movie. A master class im suspense and building off screen threats. He also did the innkeepers, which has similar strengths and is also quite good.
WOW 😳 if Shia her husband makes her mad. She can scare the 💩 out of him. With that crazy look and holding a pitcher of lemonade to throw into his eyes, if he starts getting rough with her. JK haha 😂 I love Mia Goth and Shia Labeouf! I grew up watching Shia Labeouf on the Disney Channel show Even Stevens. I had a crush on him too!

I believe the next film is also Mia Goth but not about Hollywood. It's going to be the 1980s porn industry (which is near to Hollywood, lol) and called XXX.
THE best and most accurate portrayal of a psychopath ever done on film. Amazing performance! Her monologue is a masterpiece and her reaction in the barn was scary real.

If the oscars didn't snub horror movies so much, Mia Goth would get a best actress nomination for sure.
Absolutely, and Toni Collette for her performing in Hereditary
Mia very much deserved an Oscar nomination for this. She is sooo good here.
She was fucking robbed, man
Shes a STAR 🌟
I liked X...i *loved* Pearl.
The "I'M MARRIED!" line got meeeee😂
pearl's monologue is one of the best scenes in this movie. such a raw performance from Mia Goth.

Mia Goth is a hell of an actress. Sometimes, I don't believe that she's playing crazy that woman may be genuinely crazy as hell. She does it so well.
Watching Mia Goth playing a young psychotic Pearl was everything.
She was also psychotic in infinity pool 😂
Yeah, that final shot of her smiling was so good. Very smart.

Mia Goths Performance so beautiful. She deserved an Oscar in my opinion.

It did! She is the lead in Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein (which has an insane cast), Marvel's Blade and MaXXXine (sequel to X)
