FANTASTIC video... thanks so much for doing this... I bought 5 hand held radio's from Radio Shack over the years in case I needed to talk with friends in emergencies... never used them, all are still on my shelf from the 1980's............. but I was always curious what range i would get??? I did try a couple in the 80's that had the rubber duck antenna and could only get 1/4 mile if that... so I bought a couple TCR-217 with the big antenna's but again didn't think they would go over a mile when I tested them... but I was in a low spot with lots of bridges etc. ...this was fantastic to see how far they would go thanks again.. I've wondered how far they would work walki to walki for years... also wonder about walki to a base station or good car CB I think they could go a tad bit more.

That’s funny I just bought a 5 watt SMA attenuator I didn’t know they made a 10 watt version. I love your field strength meter that’s great for a quick test. Good to see you enslaved your offspring for radio testing, my chimney needs sweeping if they have any spare time. Really enjoyed this video thanks for sharing
@@knoxieman my Dad installed a Realistic TRC-414 radio CB he bought new at a Radio Shack store for his farm tractor and for his farm dump truck sometime in the 20th century. My Dad sold the tractor and dump truck a few years ago before I had a chance to take the CB radios out. My Dad didn't know I wanted to keep those two CB radios. Please make a video about the Radio Shack Realistic TRC-414 radio CB. My Dad put this model of CB radio in his farm tractor and farm dump truck in the early 1980's. These CB radios functioned amazingly good for our 2 mile range farm work communications !
@@knoxieman thanks for the reply mate, i purchased a pair of trc-219s from the US, which by all means, are very similar transceivers. But unfortunately its been 3 weeks and I believe they are stuck at customs. Hopefully they’ll turn up soon!
Interesting stuff. We used 446 channel 5 at work and it's now almost unusable in the office, even on Motorola radios due to interference. I'm not sure what equipment has changed but I also get UHF interference at home, especially between 444-447MHz.
Yes, check your computers, my PC graphics card is all over PMR446 still not fixed the problem, also sometimes it can be people using Digital modes on PMR channels 1 to 8.
As regards hand helds etc firstly im coming back into radio since 80 ,s when i had a realistic hand held a little midland for base Ive been bought an ss9900 by my daughter and i got an luitton 80 chanrl fm and i treated my self to an aĺbrecht ae 2990 afs which does am fm ssb and amateur bands i know a few folk whove used them.on a ham and its got good reviews they are well made an operate well according to my pals its range of modes is stunning for a hand held ok still only 4 watts but in ssb it will get a lot further and certainly in amateur bands which need a slight mod and shant b touched till i get my foundation Ive got back into radio as i had to retire 14 yrs ago on ill health and cant get about likevi used to So ive got an 18ft thunderpole half wave My health is poor but radio is very exiciting im going to get my albrecht fired up this week its an intresting radio for sure Take care
@@knoxieman there is no other handheld cb that does what the albrècht does am fm ssb and amateur theyre getting quite rare i saw knights selling at £250 not cheap but quality so i got it just need to get playing with it i got a biģger aerial as the stubby aerial is not very good But you would think other companies made handheld cb with ssb and ham like albrecht they wouls sell but its putting money into development not knowing whether youd get a return I think if you developed a hand held with am fm and ssb not having ham bands it would sell like hot cakes yes only 4 watts but it will get a lot further on ssb than fm The albrecht seems popular and lots trying to get hold of them Is there any other hand held cb with ssb ??
The only one of those CB radios that will be functioning after an EMP will be the old Realistic TRC-214 because it is a solid state radio. Your other other handheld CB radios will be damaged by the EMP.

There is also a other solution. There is a freeband in the 860, 10mW I believe. (google for SRD 860MHz License-free) That band is nice and clear

It will be interesting doing tests in built up areas i know you wont get as far range out of them.
