*DRAGON BALL SUPER ABRIDGED: EPISODE 1* RELEASES SUNDAY THE 22ND OF JULY.
*I'm here to answer some **_Frequently Asked Questions!_*
The response to this project has been fantastic, but some have questions and others have legitimate criticism so... allow me to address them all!
* *_Why so long?_*
I actually cut a LOT out of the original movie but added in nearly as much. Conversations are all a fair chunk longer since there were a lot of narrative issues I wanted to fix (Bardock being a nice guy, Paragus not showing enough love for his son, Kikono having an actual character arc etc.).
This isn't to insult the original movie or to claim I've done better, just that my goal wasn't to be exclusively FUNNY, but instead be ENTERTAINING. I wanted a blend of comedy and actual drama.
* *_Why not focus more on comedy?_*
Two reasons.
I had things I wanted to fix. Like I said before, there were some plot points that kept the original from being a true 10/10 to me, as well as the rather poor 3D fight sequence near the end.
I want my work to stand out. TFS, SWE, and many others have a short, snappy editing and narrative style. TFS are probably what I'm closest to, but they still kept things at a fast pace.
It was my creative choice! Some will like it, some wont.
* *_Is this really an "abridged"?_*
Yes. I feel people are confused on this point due to only viewing the word as "The name of that funny series that made Dragon Ball shorter" rather than knowing the dictionary definition of the word.
To abridge is to shorten while retaining the heart of the original material, to paraphrase.
That's what I did. Some have argued that it's "too close to the original length" to qualify which is... confusing. I could have cut a single second out of the movie, changed nothing else about it, and it would still be an "abridged" version.
I made a creative choice to make it closer to the original pace and you're welcome to like that desicion or not!
* *_Why does it suck?_*
I am WELL aware the project has a plethora of editing issues, sound issues, bad line reads, and a whole host of other problems, especially in the early parts.
I've never made anything like this before and I, KAI, was the sole editor. By the time we got to the end, I was looking back at the first 30 minutes in agony knowing I could fix these issues.
I had to choose between spending another handful of months working on it (I had already been going for 14 months straight) or releasing it as-is and vowing to do better with Super Abridged.
I chose the latter.
* *_Why aren't you as good as TFS/Why are you copying them?_*
If you hold the first view, I encourage you to go back and watch episode 1 of Dragon Ball Abridged. It had some major quality issues.
That wasn't their first project, either, having worked on other abridged series before DBZA.
This WAS my first. I think the issue here is I'm being compared to Cell Saga and Buu Bits TFS, who had a decade of experience behind each member of the team and an actual budget.
Obviously this comparison is unfair.
I want to be as good as them someday, but it will take time and practice. Two things they were afforded. Please afford me the same.
There's a common trend I've seen where everyone who starts making abridged content, especially on Dragon Ball, gets assailed with TFS comparisons and complaints.
Abridging is a genre and no one entity should have a monopoly on it. Dragon Ball is not a property owned by TFS, so if somebody wanted to they could go and make their own abridged series on DBZ. What do the people who do this hope to gain other than disuading content creators from ever trying? TFS are not making Abridged content anymore so I don't recommend scaring off anyone that might try to fill that void.
Instead of looking down on me for what I'm not, try to find the value in what I AM.
I am not TFS. I will reference their work, respect their legacy, and find kinship in those that enjoyed their series like I did, but I will never replace them. I want to be something of my own, as do my whole team.
We made this because of my love for Dragon Ball, not a want to copy TFS.
* *_What's next?_*

I'm going to give it faster pacing to cover more ground and use everything I've learned here to put out the best damn content I can!
The first episode is scripted and covers the first 4 episodes of the anime.

Hey man, no need to short-sell yourself. You brought together alot of talent and made a really good example of what an "abridged" project should look like. You treated the source material with respect while also poking fun and bringing out the more humorous, meta side of dragon ball. Freiza explaining transformations to Paragus was a great gag.
Very much look forward to a DBS abridged, as that show is RIFE with opportunities for parody. Great job as Goku as well!

NGL, the scene with Paragus pleading with Vegeta to let Broly live and screaming for Broly to come back gave me serious chills.
I actually rented out a proper sound proofed studio to do most of the big screams in the finale, the only exception was Paragus screaming "Broly, noooo!".
I knew I had to do that one unrestrained.

Honestly? This was peak. The jokes that got me the most was Frieza explaining the many forms to Paragus in a hilarious twist of irony in comparison to paragus explaining everything since the legend is so old news now. The DOWN MEDIUM DOWN MEDIUM! "Consequences am I right? .... OH NO CONSEQUENCES!" The scene where broly kept trying the same thing over and over, The gogeta various forms gag, and lastly Broly continuing to go through mountains regardless of logic.
The writing was fantastic and the voice actors captured the heart of the original while still being their own thing. This was a incredible fantastic watch. I am so happy about how this turned out. Long live the legacy of DBZA!

Things I love about this:
1. Paragus actually gives a shit about Broly
2. It's not a sequel of the DBZA series, rather it's a new show/version that is made from scratch, with a similar yet very different feel that makes it unique.
3. The voice actors are immaculate. I'm legit shocked at how well this has been structured to be, and I'm all for it.
Don't listen to the haters fr, just because it's different than DBZA doesn't mean it's not as good. I'm almost an hour in and I'm having the time of my life rn. I will say tho, that the DBZA reference (with the pizzas) was golden. In any case, I hope this series thrives and that it takes the direction YOU want it to go. Keep at it, it's remarkable!

This is a direct rip off from TFS. From using "Abridged" in the titles to literally reading the disclaimer in the beginning as a DBZ character's voice. For those reasons alone oits fucking lame but then its just bad writing/jokes. Leaned way too much on teying to be like TFS

Maybe I'm just being a dickhead, but Abridged means a condensed/shortened version, and in reality they only cut off like 10 minutes. TFS would have made this a hilarious 40 minute video.

He doesn't know the dictionary definition of the word abridged, believes he's the arbiter of how much cutting needs to be done to qualify something as "abridged" (which literally only means to shorten, not shorten by X percent) and makes a lot of bad faith arguments (IE: A studio with a decade of experience would have made this better despite being inactive for 5+ years now not counting Buu Bits).

I think that's what the original Super film was sorta missing. He didn't feel like he cared about Broly as a father, than him caring about his power. In the Z Broly film, while he still controlled over his son, he still cared enough for his well-being, he just grew to be more scared of Broly because he was turning into a monster. Super Broly isn't as psychotic or evil as his noncanon counterpart, yet Super Paragus probably abuses him more considering he rarely talks about how much he loves his son, and treats him more like a tool than anything.

This was very well done. The critiques comparing it to tfs, dont let them get to you. The tfs fanbase always harrassed them just the same, but they expected THEIR product.
Yours is done in your own style and vision and valid in its own way. The tfs references made me happy. And the things i enjoyed most (aside from, i will admit, the truly gut-busting quips they did) were actually the "corrections" in the flawed logic of the dbz timeline. Which you covered very well.

As an OG DBZA/HUA (decidedly NOT TFS) fan, I can say the same. This movie was peak and scratched an itch I didn't know I had since the Bojack Abridged movie. I think the issue is people just not being able to be happy with something.

As someone who loves DBZA, I gotta say you guys did a great job with this. The voice acting was on point and the writing did a great job blending abridged comedy with almost legit dubbing. Hope this doesn’t get hit with copyright, because this deserves to be preserved

i calculated it (30 minutes per fusion) and frieza was getting beaten to death for 11 hours, and he turned golden at the 4 hour mark

Okay, this was great. I about died at "I would never make you take care of a baby!" "Oddly specific". I legit can not wait to see your DBS Abridged. You did a great job at telling jokes but not letting them take over the story and the nods to TFS without trying nod and wink at the camera about them was fantastic. The Pizza reference was just *chef's kiss*

Canibal Paragus is something I never knew I wanted but now adore completely
he did canonically eat the guy
They don’t put a lot of focus on it in the movie, but he is a cannibal
Paragus and his troop of saiyans were stranded on a planet, so he killed and ate them
He also made Broly eat them, which helped make him so powerful (since eating saiyans gives you strength)
He also gets an ironic death, since the way Frieza shot him was the exact spot that Paragus shot his friend before eating him

I like how this abridge doesn't use every opportunity to crack a joke. They let the battles rock, making it feel like a more authentic story telling.
I immediately got that feeling between paragus and Vegeta when they spoke of Broly's fate in the beginning

Eh, I prefer abridged series' to be mostly silly. I've already seen the original, I don't need to see it again with different lines. TFS did a lot because their series was hilarious.

i absolutely love the changes to broly and paragus's relationship in this it really shows what they could have done in the movie compared to what they did do, one of the major reasons i have for disliking super broly is that his entire he loves his father awakening story was just not fleshed out enough for it to be effective. so many changes in this i love compared to the movie, i love how his last words were ACTUALLY there and that they were an apology to his son, i love how he actually shows remorse using the remote unlike the movie, i like how the reason he went to go get his son was not "your just jealous hes so much better and ill prove it" and it was just a "i love my son", i love the change from paragus is an asshole and kills his training partner because hes "too friendly" to him putting ba out of misery because he got sick. ALSO THE FLASHBACK SCENE WAS PERFECT I DONT CARE THEY DIDNT MAKE ENOUGH SCENES FOR IT TO NOT BE DRAWN IN. props to the team on making this extremely good and funny throughout im very happy to be watching this in its first day uploaded (and also a little jealous i cant chip into the live chat)

Some people seem to forget. TFS started off GOOD and only got BETTER. This is exactly what TFS wanted when they said if someone wanted to take on Super then they have and always have had permission to do so. Let’s be glad that it’s being done by someone who seems to share the same LOVE for the the source material as TFS has.
