Your salt story reminds me of my obsession with having salt on top of my popcorn. One time, I had bought a different brand, and when I didn’t exactly how it worked. I remember cranking the handle so hard that a bit of the clear plastic fell into the bowl of popcorn, and I thought that the brand of popcorn just had occasional remnants of plastic, and temporarily got worried. In relation, to your topic my two favorite reads of last year were “Middlesex” & “The Dutch House”.
awww, i was just wondering when you would post and even double checked this morning that i havent missed an upload. this has made my day...and to open with a salt rant... LOVE. 👹✨️🖤
Great to see you! I literally just finished that duMaurier short story and wow. She knows how to do it! I’m not a short story lover but because that one was like 60 pages, it was cool. Yes, Gaitskill!🥰
Well, you’ve convinced me to get into Daphne du Maurier in 2025. My other takeaway is that I should read books that I think I’m going to hate or get rid of. Wise words as usual.
yessss!!! I read my first Towles in 2024 and it was my favorite book of the year, can't wait to read Rules of Civility. I ADORE Atonement, one of my favorite books of all time. And Du Marier is just fantastic, I love that short story collection and my favorite book of hers is My Cousin Rachel
Rebecca is a 5⭐ all time favorite. Also just read Jamaica Inn. A certain aspect wasn't a "surprise" to me but still really intriguing and well written. I want to read The Scapegoat, and The Birds, and everything she's ever written.
Top du Maurier, all riveting, in my opinion: Rebecca Don’t look now (including Not After Midnight, another favourite) My Cousin Rachel Frenchman’s Creek Scapegoat promises more than it delivers. The rest are a very mixed bag. The Birds does nothing for me.
Rebecca was my top book of 2024, thanks to your recommendation !! ... added her and Gaitskill's short story collections to my to-read.. I also thought I'd hate Atonement and I have still not read it :| I recommend you to read "I who have never known men", it's short but impactful, I am curious what you'll think of it! Happy New year!! We (royal) missed you
I'm fairly certain that all 28K of your subscribers would love to go out to dinner with you. Then I realized that there wouldn't be a restaurant that could accommodate this. Now I'm sad. So, I'll watch another of your videos. That will make me feel better. Thank you.
Omg yes I’ve been waiting for your favourite books of the year video! I love watching random peoples favs of the year videos but when it’s the favs of such an influential public figure like yourself it’s basically a necessity… My guess for the author you’ve previously claimed to hate is Cormac McCarthy. Also I want to start reading nonfiction this year and Empire of Pain has been on my TBR alongside Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and probably This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay (though this one might be a little too relatable so idk if I should read that rn lol).
I need to find a short story collection favorite. It’s kind of funny because i have to have a favorite for everything it seems. Like favorite book, favorite movie, favorite person, favorite character. Now i need a favorite short story collection lolz.
Last year I got on a kick of reading books about runners. I heard some people talking about Haruki Murakami and how good his books are, so I made a note to look them up. Then I found What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, and decided "well, I guess I'll add this to my runner books I'm reading this year." I also enjoyed it. I thought books by runners are interesting because I think runners spend a lot of time with their own thoughts, so they tend to think deeply and have interesting insights. Plus memoirs tend to be pretty easy reads as far as nonfiction goes
Loved the salty introduction. You could also simply buy the big crunchy salt and take iodide supplements if you are worried to not get enough. Alternatively eat lots of Nori algae (sushi!) or algae chips, they contain huge amounts of iodide.
Happy New Year! The late John Barth (he died in 2024) was a major US writer back in the 1970s and 1980s - I heard him speak twice on our campus. Try THE SOT-WEED FACTOR. DON'T LOOK NOW is a great collection, especially for the original of "The Birds" (and DON'T LOOK NOW was turned into a classic film with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie). For Murakami, try KAFKA ON THE BEACH.
My 5 stars from 2024: The Secret History (thanks for your recommendation), Demon Copperhead, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Far From The Madding Crowd, and Norwegian Wood by Murakami (I only gave it 4 at the finish, but I’m upping it to 5, it stays with you, as all of these do).
re: iodized salt most coarse salts do not contain iodine (coarse sea salt, rock salt, himalayan salt, etc.) but regular table salt (the fine grain one that you recently bought) usually has iodine. if you check the ingredients list it should mention if there's iodine in it or not. it's fine to have non-iodized coarse salt every once in a while as long as it's not the only salt you use in your diet, since iodine deficiency causes goiter i.e. inflammation of the thyroid in the neck which looks really gnarly. look it up if you wanna be grossed out :D
I like crunchy salt also, but kinda worried about the lack of iodine, as that can affect the thyroid. Ive since added crumpled seaweed to many dishes, lots of iodine, and it’s also in eggs, fish, chicken.
I don’t have similar reading taste … I come for your personality I find you to be hilarious ! I LOL through your videos every time lol I’m a 35 y/o mom of 4 I think you’re so funny lol
Wait I am so curious to know your thoughts on White by Bret Easton Ellis! I've read numerous books by him but honestly never even considered reading White, it just seemed too loaded of a concept for me to enjoy. Hope you talk about it eventually.
Atonement...yes! If you can handle one more book in the 1930's, probably the best ever, try Grapes of Wrath - Steinbeck shoots a nuke through a prism to capture infinite shades of human nature - fucking stunning. Not at all dry, bet you'd like. Great video.
I do the same thing with your videos: don't watch but save to have something to look forward to. (Read "Bad Behavior" on your recommendation and really enjoyed it.)
When i watched the beautiful adaptation of Atonement i had to stop it multiple times to collect myself because i was getting dehydrated with all the waterfalls on my face, annoying...
"broad with the umbrella"? you mean the MORTON SALT GIRL??/? put some respect on her name!!! also, you've convinced me to read don't look now. rebecca was an unexpected favorite and even years later i still think about it
Salt??…..ok! Iodine is good for you….unless maybe your Thyroid over produces? Only you can make a Fav’s list of 2025 in mid January 2025! Daphne D. led a very interesting life. Joy Luck Club- wonderful story about family, culture, war, love & acceptance. Lol…yes. Atonement. Worth the read.
When the world needed him most, he returned 🥲
im back.
this level of entertainment is so rare

Well, you’ve convinced me to get into Daphne du Maurier in 2025. My other takeaway is that I should read books that I think I’m going to hate or get rid of. Wise words as usual.

Always loved your vids, but also here for serving face, the eyerolls, and great hair.
this feels like a resurrection and i think we should add a lot of random stuff to the periodic table

My 5 stars from 2024: The Secret History (thanks for your recommendation), Demon Copperhead, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Far From The Madding Crowd, and Norwegian Wood by Murakami (I only gave it 4 at the finish, but I’m upping it to 5, it stays with you, as all of these do).

have u tried microwaved salt milk? its so good
how do you make that? is there a specific recipe?
long time no see! also, a review of A Gentleman in Moscow when?
Maybe I need to create a plot line for myself to better root myself in reality. Thanks for the unintentional life advice I didn't know I needed.
no ik it's actually great advice...a big reason i loved the (first half) of that book
YES POOKIE IS BACK!!! 🎉
"All My Salt" should be the title of your memoir.
Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe is another great one. Best non-fiction book I've ever read. Read it in two sitting. Un-put-downable, as they say.
re: iodized salt most coarse salts do not contain iodine (coarse sea salt, rock salt, himalayan salt, etc.) but regular table salt (the fine grain one that you recently bought) usually has iodine. if you check the ingredients list it should mention if there's iodine in it or not. it's fine to have non-iodized coarse salt every once in a while as long as it's not the only salt you use in your diet, since iodine deficiency causes goiter i.e. inflammation of the thyroid in the neck which looks really gnarly. look it up if you wanna be grossed out :D
if i looked up pictures i would have to have 2 tablespoons of iodized salt everyday
I, too, tend to be quite schizophrenic when it fits. Do not worry.
Rules of Civility is criminally underrated
we are best friends in my head
I loved this
I like crunchy salt also, but kinda worried about the lack of iodine, as that can affect the thyroid.
Empire of Pain is sooo good!
never thought i'd be adding 13 reasons why to my tbr..... see ya in 2026!
Wait I am so curious to know your thoughts on White by Bret Easton Ellis! I've read numerous books by him but honestly never even considered reading White, it just seemed too loaded of a concept for me to enjoy. Hope you talk about it eventually.

I think you'd like the short stories of Dorothy Parker.
I do the same thing with your videos: don't watch but save to have something to look forward to. (Read "Bad Behavior" on your recommendation and really enjoyed it.)
im glad you had fun ❤️
The King has graced us with his presence. All in pristine white! 🖤 Oh, happy 2025!
Let me guess: are you reading the late Cormac McCarthy?
GOOD GUESS but no. Happy 25!
was salting a baked potato while watching the intro
Not to get personal but I was just wondering what job you work to support yourself. I love books and I’m trying to figure out what major I can do
How dare you leaving us for A MONTH like that
Have you read any Samuel Beckett?
i gotta trust that i’m getting my iodide somewhere else because you’ll have to take my coarse flaky salt from my cold dead hands
I love McEwan.
if youtube ever gets banned i will miss you most
Missed u brute
When i watched the beautiful adaptation of Atonement i had to stop it multiple times to collect myself because i was getting dehydrated with all the waterfalls on my face, annoying...
“Ya’know Morten’s?” was very “Have you ever been to Krispy Kreme?” of you
HAHA
intro made me fee salty (jkomg)
"broad with the umbrella"? you mean the MORTON SALT GIRL??/? put some respect on her name!!!
also, you've convinced me to read don't look now. rebecca was an unexpected favorite and even years later i still think about it
Salt??…..ok! Iodine is good for you….unless maybe your Thyroid over produces? Only you can make a Fav’s list of 2025 in mid January 2025! Daphne D. led a very interesting life.
Joy Luck Club- wonderful story about family, culture, war, love & acceptance.
Lol…yes. Atonement. Worth the read.
