My favourite version of this song, Townes had a beautifully soft sorrowful voice. Absolutely stunning.
Really? I still prefer the simplicity of the Live at the Old Quarter version. Plus I like the way he announces that Loop and Lil were parakeets-as if the song's single ambiguity made any difference to its plainspoken clarity. Either way, either version, it's a flawless song.

Good friend of thirty years to whom I have sacrificed both time and treasure has just used this song to guilt me into moving 300 miles to his town to become his elder caregiver. Nothing against the song, I guess, but I never want to hear it again.
