I love these too! I was in Beijing March, April, and May of this year but they were all closed off because of the virus, nice to see it's back to normal now
Thanks for taking us on this hutong walk-around! I've always wondered what these places were like. In pictures they seem interesting and traditional, but also somewhat cramped. But your tour showed that the tiny streets and quarters are definitely enticing, a juxtaposition of old and new. I like how they retain the traditional look and feel, but sport a modern but eclectic feel, like the little shops and the cool rooftop cafe that you visited at the end. Thanks for bringing us these little-known places in Beijing! I think you are really bringing out the essence of the city today, a place that is fast modernizing but retains its old-world charm.
That’s a great way to describe Beijing, definitely traditional and full of culture but also very modern! Yes I love how varied the hutongs are, some are small and narrow while others are big and more modern.
@@rachelmeetschina7287 I love 'small China' and it's nice to know there's still a little of that in the big city. I hope you make your way to a nice rural village one of these days and take us back in time,
Rachel, your channel deserves more subscribers! But sorry, I don't subscribe to any channel but I will comment when I find something interesting or particularly deserving. I hope your channel grows fast from now. The more traditional hutongs are more interesting and less commercially distracting. Good job!
Its great to see the culture and the neighbourhoods of beijing through these hutongs !! there were a few near the place i stayed in chengdu a few years ago too
Thanks for posting videos like this. Personally, it makes me homesick because I’m stuck overseas due to the pandemic, but I’m glad to see people up and about returning to some semblance of normal life there. Stay safe!
Rachel, like your video! I was born in Beijing, now in Michigan. I can suggest you two fun places in Beijing. 1. 百荣商城。 “Bai Rong" shopping mall. Located at south city. South 3rd ring at "Mu Xu Yuan" 木須园。 Humongus mall, lots of cheap products, quality OK. A lot cheaper than other stores in Beijing. Can bargen with the seller. 2. 小肠陳。 xiao chang chen. Beijing most conditional food. ( if you dont mind eating intestent , but very clean) . It is a chain restraunt . one of them is located at south city, in Fang Zhuang . "方庄小区” 。 between south 2nd ring and south3rd ring,
Hi! Wow that’s awesome, thank you so much for the recommendation! I’m always looking for new places and foods to try in Beijing. I live near 东直门 so I spend a lot of time in this area 😂

Beijing hurtong is super expensive nowadays. They are in the heart of the city and one level building. The land is crazy expensive. Hurtong used to be cheap housing for the poor, now they are for super rich.
Siyu Zhou That’s true, hutong neighborhoods are very expensive to live in now, especially for foreigners! I live in a hutong and rent is not cheap compared to other apartments
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
I m a Beijinese, so homesick now in pandemic period. 😊 So thankful for your video.
Aw, I love your city! Beijing is such an amazing place.

I was living in a hutong when a kid. It is a lot of fun.
Wow great! I live in a hutong now and love it

Yes, the hutongs are a great glimpse into local Beijing life! I didn't know Chengdu also has hutongs, I'll have to go back and visit there again!
Rachel, you are one of my fav TH-camrs. 👍👍
Alex Poe wow thank you ☺️☺️

Aww, I hope you can return home soon! Yes, it is good that Beijing seems more normal again. Stay safe as well!
Hutongs look to have fun environments for kids growing up --lots of hidden places to run around in.
Very interesting! Thanks!
Thanks for watching :)

Hi we stayed in a Hutong not far from red square, there’s an amazing park nearby.
Wow great! There are so many beautiful hutongs with great parks and temples close :)
a lot of the Hutong has been demolished which is a pity. A good book by Micheal Meyer called 'The last days of old Bejing' is a good read.
Steve thanks for the book recommendation! I’ll have to check it out. Yes it’s so sad a lot of the old hutongs have been torn down or bricked up!
Great video 🇨🇳♥️💜
jean rolin dubernard thanks for watching ☺️
The cat!!! Lol
Hahaha he was just staring at me!!

This lady is a fan of Chinese culture.
Concerto M yes I think it’s so interesting!
That was a nice informative walkabout.
Nico can validate while Amy can salivate! :D
Haha very true 😂 Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
will be scary at night. if you're stalked ... its hard to escape.
It's easy to get lost in hutongs.
Yes it is! They are like a maze!
The tourist hurtong is not hurtong at all, just a street for tourist(foreigners) shopping and drinking.
I love 五道営胡同‼︎(^^)
I am not interested in contemplating ridiculous and clownish snouts. I WANT TO SEE THE HUTONGS !
The street names have some meanings, learn some Chinese.
我会说一点中文哈哈,yes learning some Chinese will definitely help you understand more of the history and meaning to the names!
I love 五道営胡同‼︎(^^)
