MTB was a Southern Rock monster. These boys incorporated blues, rock, jazz, and C&W(emphasis on the W) into their Sourthern Rock sound. Toy Caldwell on lead had that unique thump-picking style, played steel guitar and wrote most of their songs. His brother Tommy is on the bass. George McCorkle on rhythm guitar. Gerry Eubanks played flute, Sax, & keyboards. Paul Riddle on drums. Last but not least, Doug Gray is singing backup on this one, but Doug sang lead on most of the MTB songs. He (along with Gerry Eubanks) also kept the band going with different lineups after all the other original members had moved on. (Tommy was killed in a car wreck in 1980. The rest of the band split up in '83.)
MTB had 5 consecutive Gold albums in the '70s and their 6th, "Carolina Dreams" was certified Platinum in the year of its release, 1977. Personally, I love every track on Carolina Dreams. MTB was perhaps my favorite Southern Rock band. It was a great genre. Toy Caldwell was asked once about what happened to Southern Rock and Toy said, "We just woke up one day and it was gone". RIP, Toy. Your music lives on.

As a high school kid in 1973, I mowed the grass for one of my dad's younger co-workers. His girlfriend left him. And they asked my dad and another co-worker to go to his house and check on him. He had blown his head off with a shotgun. This song moves me to tears every time. He hurt so bad and couldn't figure out how to not keep on hurting. I wish he could have taken a train all the way Georgia instead, instead of feeling hopeless in a tiny town of western Kansas. He was 28 and a wonderful person.

So this band up in the Carolinas had to rent a garage to jam in. After a long morning session, they decided to break for lunch. The guys complained they needed to name their group.
As they locked up the garage, TC looked at the keyring. The tag said, Marshall Tucker(the prior tenant, not landlord). So there's that. The guy with the voice told me the backstory.
After Vietnam, my uncle needed to learn a trade. My Daddy hooked him up with a blind piano tuner as his driver and apprentice. My uncle learned the trade from the master, Marshall Tucker.
In '04/'05, a local nursing home where Marshall entertained needed a new piano. He said it was totally shot. Not even he could tune it.
It made the news. I called the band in the upstate. I told them their namesake needed a piano and could they help. They offered one of their keyboards with all the settings anyone could want. Plus, it was *theirs*.
You're not gonna believe this: the director of the nursing home *turned it down* like it was an insult.
The wind-up is, MTB and MT worked something out on the phone for the donation.
The guys aren't rolling in royalties for the same reasons many great talents don't. But their still rocking and that voice has just gotten more powerful.

If you dig Toy Caldwell's vocals, you will probably also dig the singer from the band Molly Hatchet. Check out their song Flirtin' With Disaster.
And if you dig that flute, well there's just one way to go and that's check out some Jethro Tull. Jump right in with both feet and check out their song Critique Oblique.

First concert I ever went to without adults was Molly Hatchet at Southern Star Amphitheater in Houston. Back around 1982.

Danny Joe Brown is the singer for Molly Hatchett. Really great song. I hope we see a reaction to it.😊👍
