  • 18-month cluster randomised controlled trial that included 3819 GPs who had high request rates for 11 commonly overused musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging tests. GPs were randomised to receive feedback on their request rates or no intervention. A factorial design enabled evaluation of two variations of feedback: frequency of delivery (once vs twice) and visual design (standard vs enhanced). Feedback led to a 9% relative reduction in ordering rates of the 11 imaging tests overall at 12 months compared with control (adjusted mean difference −2.66 [95% CI, −3.24 to −2.07]; P less than .001). Feedback delivered twice and enhanced display led to additional modest reductions in ordering rates.

Denise O'Connor is Professor and Deputy Director of the Wiser Health Care Unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, and NHMRC Investigator Leadership Fellow. Denise is lead investigator of Wiser Healthcare (www.wiserhealthcare.org.au), a national research collaboration of over 120 researchers across five universities that works in partnership with health agencies and consumers to ensure better value healthcare for Australians. Denise is an implementation scientist and her research explores the causes of, and the design and evaluation of solutions to address, research translation problems. This includes reducing low value care and improving uptake of effective and efficient models of healthcare service delivery.
