I have had a smart for two 450 cabriolet passion for over 18yrs now and had the old steering wheel removed to instal a paddle-shift steering wheel and along with that had a brabus engine installed from a 599cc engine to the extremely robust 700cc which now gives me 101bhp and as you know the cabriolet smart cars are even more lighter in weight so my smart for two 450 is like a bat outta hell...lol
I do believe thou since the change of the steering wheel I may have encounters a recurring issue with my airbag light showing a higher impedance on the drivers side,it may have cause an issue with the center spring coil..but im investigating..it may just be a slight short somewhere so time to split and do some work.ciao for now and thanks for a good upload on how to etc etc.

Excellent ,like most of your videos..Easy listening and nicely shot and explained.Even useful for people in the trade.I sold a 450 steering wheel where the client had to dismantle it to fit the air bag ring and all I did was ,send me your video.Cheers

I've just bought a 2005 convertible as a project/commuter so your videos are very helpful indeed. thank you.
if you get the chance i would love you to change the engine mount as i am about to do that and a good video guide like this would be awesome

Thank you, great video and very helpful. I noticed you said its wet under the carpets, welcome to the joys of leaking Smart 450. First you will find water coming in through the rear side plastic windows, that's easy to fix. Next remove the front panel and clear the drain hole in the cabin filter box (which may or may not even have a cabin filter), next carefully check the door seals (new ones are 50 quid each), then check for a leaky windscreen, the only cure for a leaky windscreen is replacement (many owners find their screens break right outside a windscreen centre if they are covered on insurance), and last but not least the panoramic roof can be removed and resealed quite easy with the correct sealant. If you are very unlucky you will have to do all of those, if you are very very lucky it's just those notorious plastic side windows at the back.

I spotted the rear side window leak and tomorrow we are going to try and cut new seals on the laser machine and put these up for sale.

@@L663 Good luck removing and replacing the clips without breaking them!

@@L663 I ended up sealing my plastic windows with Plumbers Mait and the cabin air intake drain was clogged solid too meaning I had leaks front and back.

With the wheel off, get on eBay and look for another one with the gear shift paddles fitted. They swap straight over but do need to be turned on using the MB software.. a Smart specialist can do this for around £50

i have a 450.. the other day my dog was in the car and smacked his head against the wiper control arm and broke it right now... i've tried to drill a hole in each bit, and glue a piece of metal rod in, but pretty sure it's not going to last. assuming i have to take the whole thing apart, AFTER i find a replacement? mine's an 06

I took the steering wheel off to do the steering uj that was seized and since I’ve refitted it, in the same way and same spline as I took it off, the ABS and traction lights are on with a steering angle calibration fault on the ABS control unit. Have you had this before?

This doesn't apply to this video, however, I have a smart car 2008 and the battery went dead and I replaced the battery, but now the steering wheel is locked and refuses to turn. I have connected and reconnected the battery and it still refuses to unlock. The car starts and can be put in to gear forward and back. Any suggestions to get the steering to unlock, otherwise I'll have to have it towed to a service station to get fixed.
Any help or suggestions would be great.

I have a 2008 smart car where the battery went dead and I replaced it, but now the car steering wheel refuses to turn after the replacement. Do you have any suggestions to get this to unlock the steering?
    Thank you for your time.

Thats an odd one - we just got the smart car out last week ! we put a new battery on it and she was fine !
Maybe do a lock unlock / start / battery disconnect etc

Tried that. The battery had died in it awhile ago and I finally got around to getting a replacement. I’ve tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and I looked for codes with a car scanner but no joy there either.
