    I took the Berlin-Warsaw night sleeping train in 2001. Back then all the train stations were old and derelict and all the buildings out of the window looked grey. Today it’s like a different country. All the stations have been redeveloped and most of the buildings out the window look very good. It’s unbelievable how the country has changed in the last 20 years, and it’s still changing.

Raz raz...

      It's not that perfect even today. It depends where you are in Poland. Some areas still look like in 2001... Many buildings and infrastructure still need renovation.

    I would like to add some explanation concerning the statement at 40:10 :
    The reason for the difference of railway electrification systems between Poland and Germany is purely technical and to some degree economical.
    German railways started to experiment with electrification in the early 20th century. They wanted to use alternating current to be able to step the voltage up and down with transformers - higher voltage in transmission lines and catenary like 15kV means lower losses and the insulation of the motors limits the voltage they can be made for to 3-4 kV, so transformation is necessary. The series-wound electric motors however work best with direct current or low frequency alternating current and they were the only type of suitable motors available in those days. That's why the compromise frequency of 16 and 2/3 Hz was chosen - it is exactly 1/3 of 50Hz because rotating converters were required apart from some power stations built specifically to supply railway electricity. Some 20 years ago that frequency was slightly changed to 16.7 Hz as nowadays power electronics is employed instead of rotating converters and the exact 1/3 of 50 Hz was causing some problems.
    Polish railways started to electrify around 1930 and the 3kV direct current system was chosen as more economical to build and maintain while technically good enough. The same system is used to this day in Belgium, Spain (with the exception of high-speed lines), Italy, northern parts of Czechia and Slovakia, lines around Moscow and if I'm not wrong also on some other suburban lines in Russia and in the Baltics. Before WWII only the lines connecting Warsaw and towns around it were electrified, but after WWII other lines were electrified with the same system too and it became the only system used by public railways in Poland.
    And one minor thing at 36:32 : The correct name in English is Lubuskie Voivodeship and Lebus is a historical name in German while Lubus is in Latin, btw there is a town in Germany on the Oder River called Lebus in German and Lubusz in Polish that is the source of the adjective Lubuskie.
    I have enjoyed your videos from The Transssib very much - watching them was almost like riding those trains myself.

    I also went with this train and my brother towards Przemysl. This was last year, in May 2019, also in a sleeper cabin. Though cars came from Swinoujscie and it was as fascinating as you show it in your video. In my opinion the earlier departure from Przemysl last year (18.38 instead of 19.57) was more comfortable. We were looking forward to the Sunset. What a feeling!
    But all in all a nice trip report! Keep on it!

    LOL "Different electricity systems were installed due to strategic/war reasons"? NOOOO! Until late 70s (before the power electronics era, IGBT transistor inverters etc) the 3kV DB system had some pros versus the 15kV and 25kV AC system, and currently Polish rail carriers have shitloads of old locos and EMUs which work only on 3kV. Even our high speed line is electrified 3kV to allow them use it so to reach max technical speed of 250 km/h (passenger trains currently up to 200 km/h) we have to use 3000A of current (so we need very thick traction cables, using 15kV or 25kV AC they would be much thinner) and it limits us to 250 km/h as the "speed ceiling" - to reach 300 km/h the line would need to be switched to some higher voltage electrification sysem.

    Before current timetable train between Przemysl and Berlin drove other line. Train drove to Raciborz and he waited on Nightjet from Wien to Berlin. He waited normal 2 hours and more when Nightjet was delayed. I waited few time for Nightjet. I don't like conductors. I sleep and he ask me about ticket in night. It's very annoying

    I think this train will not last for a long time. Its running times are completely unattractive for travellers. The most heavily populated area during its journey is Upper Silesia, and Krakow too is a big town, but they are reached in the night, when the journey starts in Berlin in the afternoon. I think it should leave Berlin in the evening, and reach Katowice and Krakow in the morning.
    And the same is for the back journey, with too late departures from Krakow and Katowice and too late arrival in Berlin. Who would use this train between Berlin and Katowice, for example?

      Seating places are dedicated for people who dont like spend much money for ticket.
      Maintaining sleeping train especially international is unprofitable. The most important reason why there are international trains it's a rail custom of sorts.

    • @afcgeo882

      Only one train system in Europe is profitable and that’s Eurostar. The rest live on subsidies. They’re looked at like public bus/metro systems.

    • @jmsmilfajt
      @jmsmilfajt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George L not true! there are definitely more routes in profit without subsidies, only Czechia has at least two of them (Regiojet from Prague to Ostrava and Vienna...)

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jakub Milfajt You’re kidding, right? RegioJet is a private company that runs on public infrastructure that they don’t pay for. They also receive subsidies from Czechia and Slovakia for the majority of their fares as they are student/elderly fares. Lastly, RegioJet makes ALL of its profits from their bus operations. Their train operations still operate at a loss. The total RegioJet net profits last year were €700.000. Student Agency (the parent company) also does travel agency work, which adds to profits.
      Also, I wasn’t talking about individual routes. I was talking about rail systems. Routes don’t exist in a vacuum.

      @@afcgeo882 Do international bus companies pay for the roads? Do international car drivers? Do airlines pay fuel taxes? All forms of transport is subsidised including cars. No one pays the true cost - there are externalities that are not included in the price. The externalities are either paid by taxpayers or through borrowings with the intent that inflation over time will take care of the principal.
      Long distance trains are also handicapped compared to European airlines. They have to pay tax on fuel. Whether it is electricity or diesel, tax is still paid regardless. Planes don't have to pay fuel taxes. At least trains are much less environmentall polluting than cars/planes/ICE buses; and with electrification air quality is greatly improved.
      Cars, planes and buses are still getting away without paying externalities (both environmentally and economically). However, this isn't really mentioned in public discourse to the same extent as rail. Why do railways have to be profitable when the same standard is never applied to roads?
