  • In this week's full episode we go over the look and use of Traditional and One Coat Paints in addition to the Slap-Chop method! I think it's super important to know multiple ways of painting because you never know when a situation will call for what. Something you will notice as well during this video is that I am a big Vallejo guy - they're all already in dropper bottles, and they just flow super well! That being said you should also find a brand that you love and works for you.

Haven’t had a chance to give the comments some love lately, so here I go!
Originally when I did this video I wanted to represent models which were going to be much closer to what someone’s actual first model may look like. A lot of times when people start out they see videos or tutorials that show immaculate paint jobs, and then when they try it themselves it doesn’t quite look right, and they get frustrated either quitting or just never get around to painting their minis. At least that’s how it was for me!
I really want to try and make approachable content, and share my journey as a painter, embracing all the mistakes and progress it takes to improve. I am a pretty amateur painter, but I love the hobby and making these videos help me to better understand the craft. Whatever the case that motivates you to watch, I hope that you enjoy something from it! Whether you learn something, or enjoy tearing it apart, I want there to be something for everyone :)
And if you’re new to painting, don’t be afraid of making mistakes or failure. Keep trying and enjoy the work you put into it!

Perhaps I'm wrong, but considering the video is geared toward people who have not yet painted their first model, it's worth taking this risk. You should have stressed it's not going to cost $66, $80 or $90 dollars for every single miniature they paint. I'm sure many are rolling their eyes at this comment, but never underestimate what confusion and nervousness can do to otherwise sensible, intelligent people, temporarily. Regardless, you've made a fine video for those contemplating getting involved in the hobby or gaming world.

RE: slap chop, cost saver.. you do not have to buy dry brush paints... craft store acrylics work fine, dip your brush (just the tip) brush most of the excess off on a paper towel and do your dry brush undercoat with that. For the white layer I would recommend a heavy body titanium white like Winsor Newton Galleria. The brightness from the higher quality white make a significant difference to your end highlights.

cheap alternatives starting out: wet pallette = small plastic carton with wet paper towel under a piece of cooking parchment, painting handle = an empty pill bottle with some sticky tack appliled to the top to hold the mini bases in place.

I disagree with one comment on Slapchop, I have found it to be the fastest method for me. Drybrush, speedpaints, additional highlights (occasionally added shadows) done. High quality table top mini!

I think you have a point there. I should have added a caveat with traditional style of painting that there is an intention down the line to add layering, edge highlighting etc once you gain more experience. I think for me I get very intimated by more advance videos, and wanted to show these methods as simple as possible as cheaply as possible. Good thing for me to mention in the future. Thank you! :)
All hail our savior the Slap-Chop!

xpress colors brought me back in to the hobby also. I was a pretty good painter in the 90s but painting took forever. now i can paint whole models in under an hour. I dont like how slap chop looks. when finished. I use pale-chop instead. i start with a vallejo grey primer (it is only slightly darker than off white) then I drybrush on some white. pale chop looks much more colorful.
MOBhammer I can tell you how to improve you contrast painting by a lot. I can see so many brush strokes on the model you painted. what you want to do is paint the model with as few strokes as possible. so divide the model into sections. (easy with space marines since the model is already divided into panels built in the armor) so start with the boot portion. load the brush with enough paint to cover the foot with a little extra. paint it on with one stroke. there's going to be some pooling. so use a clean and damp brush to absorb some of the pooling paint back off the model. then leave it alone. do not touch it again for 2 hours. move on to the next panel, the greaves, and do the same thing. it is a big panel. so use a bigger brush that has enough load to paint the greave in one stroke. once you learn to paint sections with one stroke, your model will have a much smoother finish. and you wont have the coffee stains if you use clean brushes to remove excess.

I get that this is a journey idea and kudos on staying positive. We all start somewhere.
If you are open to trying a simple method to try out :
Black prime > mix 1:1 medium and base color over the whole model. Apply base colors for metals, trims and details ect.
Keep the consistency to milk or slightly runny as thickness is not what you want.
If you aren't sure run it on your skin. It shouldn't be another layer of skin.
Now apply a wash over the whole model.
Go over the dried wash with your base (thinned down) where you don't want shadow(most of the model).
Apply highlights to the model as needed by picking out the edges using the side of your brush.
If you want to go the extra mile you can also mix a small, thin amount of base color and layer to have some transition.
Go over the spots that light would touch.
Apply more water to create a glaze and create subtle transitions by applying more layers.
Use decals or add detail to the minis.
    Hope that helps.

I would recommend airbrushing your minis/ dry-brushing them, you get all the volume of contrast without the cost. just prime the mini black and dry-brush/airbrush a shadow and then highlight from the top and there is loads of volume to work with, then add the trim and your basically done. Dry-brush my be boring but its a lot less stressful then even base-coating minis. If I have to paint an entire army, dry-brushing or airbrushing is a lifesaver.

I've tried many brushes since getting into the hobby. And the best, by far, no contest, have not been any expensive art level brushes of any kind - but instead incredibly cheap 3-for-1-buck synthetic brushes from a local store that don't even have a name at all on them. Incredibly soft and easy to utilize bristles, hold more than enough paint, easy to clean, and because they're so incredibly cheap, ruining a few when doing quick and dirty batch painting doesn't hurt.

The only little caveat I'd add to the contrast method is that it will look somewhat messy if you only put a single coat on. If you let it dry, and then apply another one (with thinned paint) then it should take away that inconsistency in the colour, particularly if its darker like a goblin green or flesh tearer's red

Hey bud, welcome to the hobby. I'm so glad I started many many years before TH-cam existed, otherwise I might have gotten discouraged too. Let me gatekeep in reverse. I've been painting for 27 years. I've been painting longer than MOST of mini painting TH-cam, longer than many of them have even been alive! So, let me WELCOME you to this amazing hobby. For the majority of my painting I didn't have anyone to help me... I had no TH-cam. I had to just figure it out...and let me tell you...I painted BAD, really really bad. Now, I paint ok, good enough I can ask for commissions if I want, but it wasn't easy. It was super hard. There's so much stuff you have to learn to make it look easy.
The point is you should enjoy it. Paint at the level you can, never save something for when you can "paint better". Paint what you want right now as best as you can. Try all the basics and do what works. And then try new stuff and other stuff. And over time you too will learn. Just have fun with it. Sometimes just paint it however you want, sometimes challenge yourself.
Just go for it. Ignore the silly people who were also once beginners. We all were. We ALL painted terrible at first. So what. Enjoy.

For where you're at, and with how the youtube market is saturated, have you considered that presenting your knowledge is a humorous way, i.e., rebranding to something like badwarhammer?
It's obvious that you've got decent editing and video skills, and would like to appeal to an audience by providing knowledge for begginers, though your painting skills aren't yet near that same level. Embracing that dichotomy and the humor of it would really give an edge to your content in comparison to the many other warhammer or painting channels.

    Sorry man
If I may give you some tips:
    - you need moisture on your brushes. The first one was almost being dry brushed. You can see on your palette when you unload the brush how dry it is because it even leaves brush stroke marks on a wet palette
    - you gotta thin those paints. You will see they will flow much nicer
    - you NEED layering. You need to layer your painting, and you need shades, and highlights.
    - if you are going to use contrast/speedpaints/xpress... You gotta be careful not to stain your miniatures. You need to avoid pooling on those paints. Or it'll look sloppy and stained

    • @lucasathus
      @lucasathus 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@MOBhammer40k some tips I'd give you:
      - Always apply paint with a moist brush. Even when "dry brushing", the paint can't be totally dry. You will avoid clumps, and also will avoid the "chalky" look
      - You can thin contrast paints too
It will help you conceal brush strokes, and also will help the paint to go into the recesses
      - When you apply contrast/washes/etc, get a clean brush and touch it on the areas that have pooling. That way you can avoid so much staining
      - layers... You gotta build layers. Always with thin paint. Usually 3 colors will suffice: shadow, base, highlight.
Layering will make your painting more interesting. Your models will pop more, you will be able to enjoy the details, and you will be able to correct your mistakes from earlier layers

  • @Dontcare_life
    @Dontcare_life 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

I don't want to sound mean or overly condescending, but you might want to refrain from making beginner painting tutorials until your a bit more skilled yourself. Your paint jobs while clean are very flat with no depth or good contrast. You also might want to try contrast paint or army painters equivalent over the Vallejo stuff because it looks very splotchy and just kinda bad on its own and combined with slap chop. You should also look into layering paint so you dont have to use more beginner techniques like slap chop or washes. If you get good at layering and blending you can achieve a look similar to traditional painting, an example of this is nmm or non metallic metal.

Howdy! You’re certainly in no way wrong, I very much consider myself an amateur painter. The goal of this channel is track my journey as I try to improve and experiment with different ideas. Even this video I’m aiming to be incredibly simple because I’ve been very intimidated by seeing more expert painters shows examples. But my hope is that people will see what I’m doing and think - “you know what, I think I can do better.”
For me I found the process of trying to explain/make videos gives me the focus on better understanding what works and what doesn’t. Even your comment makes including advice is a big part of that. :)
In regards to Xpress colors, I was actually kinda surprised with how “Troll Green” behaved. I used Caribbean Turquoise on another model and it looked absolutely gorgeous when painted the same way. The reason I’ve ended up gravitating more towards Xpress is because is dries a little slower, and it ends up being a bit more forgiving when it come to repetitive brush strokes. However, perhaps more experimenting with how the different colors flow on the will be another good step. Tale Of Painters has a great video on it!

I've to say that I found this video refreshing, there are plenty of people out there who paint to amazing standards that most people can't realistically hope to achieve without lots of practice that they very often don't have the time for (or the talent)
Usually that means that those viewers will end up trying to replicate works of those artists and end up with results looking far closer to what you show on this video than some artistic marvel shown in the tutorial by aforementioned painters. It's frankly discouraging and will lead them to believe that they're just bad. Your results are what realistically most people end up with, not the Golden Demon awards but just solid looking minis.
Though I do believe that if you took the "today I as a newbie try this thing that I know nothing about, let's try it together" route, that you'd do better to transfer your idea of beginner-friendly guides channel and the personal journey as an artist than if you tried to speak from the position of a teacher when you haven't really mastered the subject yourself. At the very least it would avoid comments like these from people who misunderstood your intentions.
I myself enjoy joining for the ride as someone who's still a relative beginner and it makes me feel as if I'm sharing the same struggles and results with someone else. For that reason alone I've subscribed. Apologies if you're actually some sort of world-class painter, I haven't browsed the rest of your clips yet (but definitely will!).
Ps. your video production itself is great, the sound, the camera work and how the content of the video itself is arranged, I've no doubt you'll grow your channel to a respectable size in no time if you keep up like this. I'll join for the journey!
PPS - I've just seen your Warglaive video and it's apparent that you're more in store than appears in this specific video, although that one too has a few visible mistakes which I'm definitely happier to see than a flawless work of art. Looking forward to more!
