Not true at all, it has to do with , if there are stones set in a ring, that sometimes when sizing down the prongs or channels may pull away from the stone therefore loosening the stones, which may have to be re- tightened or reset. But I would say, about 90% of rings can be sized down without damage... there are always exceptions of course.

When I was a little girl my aunt had got me my birth stone it's a peridot and I love my ring well needless to say I grew and my ring didn't. So I decided to take it back to the jewelry store it came from and have it sized, I was very pleased with it , but it ended up coming apart. I really need to take it back to have it repaired I was just so disappointed and it wasn't cheap to have it sized and I've been wondering why it happened.

The ring needed a new half shank, not just adding a piece of gold. Also he used unnecessary amount of golds and solders to size a ring which was wasteful of golds and solders. And he hammered too much to straighten the shank that leaves a lot of deep hammering marks. By filing those marks off the price is thin out the shank. if the ring is old the polisher should have polished the tip of the prongs by the flex shaft not the stationary polishing machine. In the end, holding a polished ring with a metal tweezer will have the chance to scratch the ring.
I totally disagree. To a novice that has never seen this done before it's a beautiful excellent job. Most of the comments agree with me including professional jewelers.

Ive been told that cant make it smaller. You can make it biger. The reason is it will break from the stress.
