Would this be good for a LE warlock of the Archfey and shadow sorcerer. Or would green flame blade be better I am a distant fighter until a battle that’s close battle.
6th lvl melee wizard: you have the potential to do 8d8 and still have a bonus action spell 6th level melee warlock: yea give him like a 5 hp minion once per day or somethin, idk
Value may indicate durability, so that the weapon can channel the thunder/booming energy, and won't break like a cheap imitation. Also excludes improvised weapons, unarmed, natural claws. Proficiency factors into the hit chance.
So, my issue with the eldritch knight is that I can attack you with a spell/cantrip then hit you in the face once, or I can hit you in the face four time doing twice as much damage in the process. What I am saying here is that the eldritch knights war magic feature actually results in you doing less damage, so for my games I swap it so that if you hit someone with a melee attack you can use your bonus action to cast a cantrip instead of the other way around.
Instead of using Eldritch Knight spells to attack, I'm looking at concentration spells for buffs or extra damage. It's possible with feats to learn Hex, Hunter's Mark for more damage or Bless to buff attacks. If you take Warcaster you have advantage on Con checks as well as proficiency. Instead of a one shot increase to damage, concentrate on a spell and save your reaction for Absorb Elements or Shield. There's also Protection from Evil or Good, which might be more useful than Absorb Elements depending on the threat environment.
in tashas they nerfed bb and gfb by not working with spell sniper, stopping them from working with reach weapons but they are self (5 foot radius) and target an enemy in range
I don't think BB targets self. It has a point of origin of self, but targets only the attack target which is what makes it eligible for war caster. Also, the question of whether a target refrain from moving, it should be noted that PHB says the target of a spell doesn't necessarily know if a spell was cast on them unless the effect is obvious. I would say they don't likely know that they're under the effect of BB, so they wouldn't have reason to stop.
Would undead warlock, pack of the the blade with blooming blade be a good combo because undead warlocks can cause the frighten effect once per turn on after a successful attack if they fail their wisdom saving throw and if you add blooming blade would that cause the damage effect, also would that cause you reaction to attack again if their running away
Can you great weapon master feat as a blade singer wizard? And can you multi attack with a melee attack in a spell? So this update means it doesn't work with a whip?
thanks to sage advice, i'm regularly going to use this cantrip with my shadow sorcerer/assassin's shadow blade. it's telling that you spent so much time discussing this cantrip, and i'm sure you spent a good amount of time researching it. it all shows, and is appreciated. i do disagree with you about the sheath of energy only going off with willing movement "making sense". in my mind that sheath is like saran wrap, and it would activate with *any* movement, not just willing; i have yet to see a DM not agree but with that being said most often the creature activates the sheath willingly anyway.
Right now I'm playing a divine soul sorcerer 8/ paladin 2 and I use the invocation feat for devil's sight then use a great axe + booming blade + smite. I have a belt of giant str (+5) and just got great weapon master so if they can't see me in magical darkness i'll do 2d20kh1+9(4 if GWM attack) to attack then do 1d12 reroll once if 2 or lower +1d8 (booming blade) +5 +smite (2d8 up to 5d8 on non-undead/fiends and 6d8 on undead/fiends) and crit for some pretty nice damage lol. Using the max against an undead/fiend it does ~44 and ~83 on crits and I can quicken another one or cast a spell, use sorcery points, I can only do these attacks about 6 times a day so really most of the time doing ~17/29 without using any resources and that's not including the +10 from GWM.
I assume you are asking whether you can substitute one attack from your attack action for this cantrip. The answer to that would be: no. Casting a cantrip is an action unto itself. That said, Blade Singers and Eldritch Knights have specific work arounds that allow them to do exactly what you’re asking.
Sadly the Booming Whip won't work, as the target needs to be within 5ft as well. The Swashbuckler's Rogue however has Footwork able to take him out of range again.
I love this spell as the stereotypical surprise combo with wizards. Booming Blade someone (I've always felt most casters should invest a little bit into DEX as that's often their main form of AC) with a dagger, then Misty Step away. When they chase you down, there's a loud noise and you've now blown them out of their boots.
It stats, you make one attack as part of the casting of the Cantrip. So, yes. You use your proficiency bonus in the attack roll( if you're proficient with the weapon you're using, off course.) and the ability modifier for the Damage.
Sure as long it's now a status condition. It's a spell effect. So as long as everyone casts it before the target moves. I am hoping to combo this spell with my parties artificer. I had my warlock take telekinetic so can shove or pull people as a bonus. So I hope we both attack with booming blade and then I shove the enemy away from us. Then as long as the enemy does doesn't have range attack then can either twiddle their thumbs or move and take a decent chunk of damage.
booming blade(cantrip) + Divine smite (compatible class feature) + wrathful smite (bonus action spell) + Wacaster(feat to apply a second dose when they run)
I’m playing a war cleric and will be getting booming blade via magic initiate. If I hit with booming blade and they go to move but, someone hits with sentinel feat so they can’t move. Does booming blade still go off because they tried to move or not?
RAW, no. The target has to actually move 5 feet or more, so save the opportunity attack if you're wanting to get the damage from Booming Blade off, though if someone with the Sentinel feat is attacking them, they're probably not going to want to move anyways and you'll easily be able to gang up on them, especially if flanking is allowed, since now even moving around the Sentinel while staying in their threatened area is disincentivized.
I have only a question: Isn't the range refer to the fact that you have to hit a target within 5 ft from you (like most of normal weapon attacks)? EDIT: For the comment that say to use a whip and use booming blade in 10ft, it can't do that because the range of the spell is limited to a target within 5ft from you. And for the comment that asked if it works with multi attack...it doesn't, because the spell use the entire action for its effect
@@ricardoweber5744 yeah, probably it would work, but I'm not sure because these spells work like normal weapons and the range refers to the fact that you can hit someone next to you with a melee weapon.
As a DM, I would absolutely allow a player to use a whip, or any melee weapon, with this cantrip, even if the RAW states 5ft. Booming Blade essentially briefly alters the properties of the weapon itself; so, if you happen to have a weapon that can reach a bit further (like a spear or halberd) then there is no reason the spell would stop working just because you use it to hit someone 10ft away instead of just 5. It's still a melee weapon, you're not throwing the thing, therefore the spell should logically work either way. That's my ruling, at least. I imagine most reasonable DMs would agree. If a player can break your game by casting a cantrip on a whip instead of a sword, then it's probably time to learn to be a bit more flexible as a Game Master.
A less wordy way of putting it is: the target of this cantrip isn't the creature you're hitting, it's the weapon you're using. If I cast Booming Blade on my whip, it doesn't matter if I use it to attack something that's 10ft away, because the whip itself stays in my hand (and therefore within 5ft) the whole time.
Going back to 3.5 but if their is a "knockback" spell or effect. Lol Hammer of the BOOM!! 2 Handed weapon enchanted with Booming Blade. Spell effect is just like the spell. But add in the say on a crit you send your enemy after being hit flying back 15ft. And it should trigger the Booming Blade.
@@ricardoweber5744 it doesn't work with spell sniper anymore as the base range is self and is incompatible. Funny thing is Booming Blade still works with spears as Base Spears only have a 5ft melee range. Pikes with range on the other hand.....not so much.
Take this cantrip, and friends or charm person. You could hit them with it, and then try to charm them. If it works, they view you as a friend. You could say " aye man! Haven't seen you in ages, Bring it in!" And open your arms. They will possibly move to give you a hug, thus triggering the damage. It could fail, but I've done it before and it's funny
@@bskec2177 ah, I see. It would probably work against a more stupid opponent, who has no idea what the spell is. Like, an orc or Goblin who has never seen that spell before, or a particularly stupid town guard
@@rocksnrolls Even a character who's never seen it before might take some convincing to walk into it, and you only have a 1 round duration. Might be worth a shot tho.
The ruling on green flame blade & booming blade don’t make sense, range of self(you are the origin of the spell) makes perfect sense, but as you use the weapon as a material component, and make a melee attack with it, why not just remove the ruling on 5ft radius“ & just leave it at making a melee attack with the weapon” so if it has reach, you get to use your reach, & if you are a bug bear you get to use your extra reach, it just sounds dumb that you can imbue a reach weapon with magic, but you can’t use the weapon for it’s intended purpose of making an attack with reach, why would the magic stop working as soon as part of the weapon goes more than 5ft from you while you are still holding it?
If you have reliable way to trigger its effect. It does almost double the damage of any cantrip to a single target. Useful damaging cantrip for Druid and cleric. Not too useful for classes that can do multiple hits with one action.
12th level Pact of the blade hexblade warlock Booming blade + pact weapon +spellcast+prof to hit 1d8+spellcast slashing dmg 2d8 thunder dmg 3d8 if they move Take the thirsting blade invocation to do this twice an action, I didn't even mention the extra dmg from hex cursing a target
@@TheCzarsoham exactly. But if you are not a fighter with a greatsword and various extra attacks, then booming blade is better. Let's say you are a paladin with longsword and shield. In this situation, casting Booming blade is better than extra attack
@@Daile0303 Of course! I'm more biased because I have been playing an Eldritch Knight who just hit level 5 and my DM told me that Booming Blade is a spell and not a melee weapon attack. And yes, realising that did make me a little disappointed. 😂
I like the twin spell of booming blade because since it's a cantrip it only cost 1 sorcery point. So you could better crowd control by making two opponents stuck for a round. Plus I wish it didn't need a weapon for it and just be a meler weapon attack. That way you can combo it with unarmed fighting style with eldritch knight so it's not wasted on the subclass.
Sorry to be critical, because I usually LOVE your stuff... but Please edit this down! If you want to put out information about your channel do that in a different video. If you want to talk about that silver piece mele weapon- sure but don't do it twice and then leave out Shadow Blade change (so we can't use Booming Blade with Shadow Blade Spell). How long does that "curse" last? If they stay still until the end of their turn or the beginning of the next turn do they avoid the movement-activated extra damage? So you need to provoke them into moving and chasing you (or something like that?). Are there ANY cantrips that have damage higher than this?
I just realized that at low levels a sorcerer with fighter dip can get a lot of attacks. You action surge with 2 twin booming blade and a quickened booming blade afterwards. Maybe paladin for some smites in there for the lols. No idea if this is viable but it is, I believe, a thing. Green flame blade may be better but also may not be twinable sooo.....
booming blade is not twinable either. Twinned Spell. When you cast a spell that targets only one creature and doesn't have a range of self Booming Blade: Range: Self (5-foot radius)
Monk main here; booming blade wouldn’t be efficient on a monk at all in terms of action economy. Using a whole action to make one attack using the ‘cast a spell’ action wouldn’t allow the monk to use extra attack or flurry of blows. At level 11 with a 20 dex, this means the monk would sacrifice about 24-56 damage from standard attacks + flurry of blows spread out between 4 attack rolls, to deal between 8-53 damage on just one attack roll (increasing chances of just missing and wasting a turn) Yeah, don’t take booming blade as a monk.
@@vikings-pistons sage advice rulings say otherwise, but you’re welcome to do that in your games. Just was posting the RAW and how it wouldn’t work on a monk as efficiently
It could still work if you are using the new optional rules. Now follow me. Because Booming blade allows for attack rolls with a melee weapon, you can use either Focused Aim or Stunning Strike. Both do not require Attack Actions specifically. Then, after having used a Ki point for your action, you can use your bonus action for an unarmed or melee weapon attack. You still make less attacks, but the difference in potential damage is not as severe as you estimated.
Booming Bow: Ammunition property allows you to make a melee attack instead (it becomes an Improvised weapon instead of a ranged weapon) You can now use booming blade on any Ammunition property weapon. Cons: No Sneak attack(imp wpn) No Archery Style(imp wpn) No proficiency unless Feat Uses Str and weapon is 1d4
Tbh the fact that there is lightning damage I think it’s dumb that they call it thunder just call it sound damage tbh it’s like if they made ALL sound Pokémon electric type cause it’s thunder (yes there is 2 sound Pokémon that are electric type but there are a lot that are normal)
If I may advice you, try to not ramble so much, instead frontload the video wiith how the spell works. People who find your video want to know how the spell works, and the information is not communicated straightforward.

@@fatcoyote2; What if YOU were the one with a reach weapon? You could tag someone with your halberd from 10ft, thus forcing them to move toward you if they want to attack with their shorter weapon.
Boom
Forget to ask something about 2 other comments. First, the whip, you would have to be within 5feet of the creature, right?!? So using it at 10ft is no go. I think.
Second, Ermac Macro's Build. If you push the creature away either physically or as a consequence of a spell it doesn't count as willing movement, so no trigger for the Booming Blade, right?!?
Booming blade and war caster as an eldritch knight is so fun
Would this be good for a LE warlock of the Archfey and shadow sorcerer. Or would green flame blade be better I am a distant fighter until a battle that’s close battle.
6th lvl melee wizard: you have the potential to do 8d8 and still have a bonus action spell
6th level melee warlock: yea give him like a 5 hp minion once per day or somethin, idk
*laughs in blade singer*
Is the booming blade damage in addition to the damage with the regular melee attack's damage?
Yes.
Value may indicate durability, so that the weapon can channel the thunder/booming energy, and won't break like a cheap imitation.
Also excludes improvised weapons, unarmed, natural claws.
Proficiency factors into the hit chance.
Great video
Is the spell verbal and material? Because in some descriptions of the spell it’s listed as somatic and material, which is it?
So, my issue with the eldritch knight is that I can attack you with a spell/cantrip then hit you in the face once, or I can hit you in the face four time doing twice as much damage in the process. What I am saying here is that the eldritch knights war magic feature actually results in you doing less damage, so for my games I swap it so that if you hit someone with a melee attack you can use your bonus action to cast a cantrip instead of the other way around.
That's some nutty damage
Instead of using Eldritch Knight spells to attack, I'm looking at concentration spells for buffs or extra damage. It's possible with feats to learn Hex, Hunter's Mark for more damage or Bless to buff attacks. If you take Warcaster you have advantage on Con checks as well as proficiency. Instead of a one shot increase to damage, concentrate on a spell and save your reaction for Absorb Elements or Shield. There's also Protection from Evil or Good, which might be more useful than Absorb Elements depending on the threat environment.
Am I reading it wrong?
Warcaster allows an opportunity casting that targets the opponent. Booming Blade targets self. How do they work together?
in tashas they nerfed bb and gfb by not working with spell sniper, stopping them from working with reach weapons but they are self (5 foot radius) and target an enemy in range
Ermac Macro core idea can be apllied with Hexblade right? The thunderstep, booming with PAM...
i did exactly the same. My DM was fine with that. :)
EDIT
he was not fine with that, after i told him about Spell Sniper. :/
pam bonus attack works only when you take the attack action per raw
Does this work with the rogue's Sneak Attack?
Happy new year!!
Question, does the spell destroy the blade? My DM is of the opinion that the blade is consume.
Would this work with features that use the attack action like extra attack RAI
I assume you are asking whether you can substitute one attack from your attack action for this cantrip. The answer to that would be: no.
Casting a cantrip is an action unto itself. That said, Blade Singers and Eldritch Knights have specific work arounds that allow them to do exactly what you’re asking.
Sadly the Booming Whip won't work, as the target needs to be within 5ft as well.
The Swashbuckler's Rogue however has Footwork able to take him out of range again.
Holy crap 34 min for a cantrip
I love this spell as the stereotypical surprise combo with wizards. Booming Blade someone (I've always felt most casters should invest a little bit into DEX as that's often their main form of AC) with a dagger, then Misty Step away. When they chase you down, there's a loud noise and you've now blown them out of their boots.
Does the melee weapon attack for this spell include proficiency bonus for attack and damage rolls?
It stats, you make one attack as part of the casting of the Cantrip. So, yes. You use your proficiency bonus in the attack roll( if you're proficient with the weapon you're using, off course.) and the ability modifier for the Damage.
My question is this. Is the blade destroyed as it is listed as a component?
the only time a component is lost is if it says so in the description
Would this stack if multiple people used it like if they moved could they potentially take 8d8 damage
How do I use code welcome to get a one shot?
booming blade(cantrip) + Divine smite (compatible class feature) + wrathful smite (bonus action spell) + Wacaster(feat to apply a second dose when they run)
This was the comment, I was looking for, thank you!!
I kinda figured that would be the answer so, thank you for confirming it.
too long! I love your old format. You make good stuff, Chance.
Can I imbui the weapon of my friend that is a paladin? Or is only my weapon?
I guess the "self" part in the range it's self explanatory.
Shouldn't the range be equal to the reach of the weapon
I believe the change was to prevent this being able to combo with shadow blade spell. Shadow blade has no material value so it won't combine.
I have only a question:
Isn't the range refer to the fact that you have to hit a target within 5 ft from you (like most of normal weapon attacks)?
EDIT:
For the comment that say to use a whip and use booming blade in 10ft, it can't do that because the range of the spell is limited to a target within 5ft from you. And for the comment that asked if it works with multi attack...it doesn't, because the spell use the entire action for its effect
Yes.
I think you could use it with a whip if you have the spell sniper feat
Happy New Year, I hope you doing okay! c :
I'm looking into this for my arcane trickster rogue gnome
Going back to 3.5 but if their is a "knockback" spell or effect. Lol
Hammer of the BOOM!!
2 Handed weapon enchanted with Booming Blade. Spell effect is just like the spell.
But add in the say on a crit you send your enemy after being hit flying back 15ft. And it should trigger the Booming Blade.
thanks hehehe for my arcane trickster
So... A No, to the spear?
If you get the Spell Sniper feat then you can use it i think.
I could be wrong
Charmed people generally won't take an action that hurts themselves, so probably won't work.
@@bskec2177 yeah. You're probably right. Maybe an insight roll vs your deception?
Kobold aren't cowardly. They might give home if they scout maybe but...
I think the price of the Weapon is important for things like shadow blade
If you have reliable way to trigger its effect. It does almost double the damage of any cantrip to a single target. Useful damaging cantrip for Druid and cleric. Not too useful for classes that can do multiple hits with one action.
It has to be worth 1 SP so you can't cast it on shadowblade of flameblade
That is correct.
Lol I like how booming blade uses a star of david.
12th level Pact of the blade hexblade warlock
Booming blade + pact weapon
+spellcast+prof to hit
1d8+spellcast slashing dmg
2d8 thunder dmg
3d8 if they move
Take the thirsting blade invocation to do this twice an action, I didn't even mention the extra dmg from hex cursing a target
It doesn't work with extra attack unfortunately
Booming blade > extra attacks
Unless you use a greatsword
Bladesong wizard gets to attack and use booming blade at level 6
Can’t use a greatsword as a bladesinger though
Great weapon master + greatsword extra attacks > Booming blade
@@TheCzarsoham exactly. But if you are not a fighter with a greatsword and various extra attacks, then booming blade is better. Let's say you are a paladin with longsword and shield. In this situation, casting Booming blade is better than extra attack
@@Daile0303 Of course! I'm more biased because I have been playing an Eldritch Knight who just hit level 5 and my DM told me that Booming Blade is a spell and not a melee weapon attack.
And yes, realising that did make me a little disappointed. 😂
I put this on my arcane trickster
I like the twin spell of booming blade because since it's a cantrip it only cost 1 sorcery point. So you could better crowd control by making two opponents stuck for a round.
Plus I wish it didn't need a weapon for it and just be a meler weapon attack. That way you can combo it with unarmed fighting style with eldritch knight so it's not wasted on the subclass.
Can't twin spell it with the new rules.
@@Asianladylover4l exactly
When you cast a spell that targets only one creature and doesn't have a range of self
Booming Blade: Range: Self (5-foot radius)
@@sylvnfox that.... Is depressing...
@@sylvnfoxexactly I had to look that one up was gonna pick this or green flame blade for my warlock sorcerer but not sure if it’s a good idea
Monk main here; booming blade wouldn’t be efficient on a monk at all in terms of action economy. Using a whole action to make one attack using the ‘cast a spell’ action wouldn’t allow the monk to use extra attack or flurry of blows. At level 11 with a 20 dex, this means the monk would sacrifice about 24-56 damage from standard attacks + flurry of blows spread out between 4 attack rolls, to deal between 8-53 damage on just one attack roll (increasing chances of just missing and wasting a turn)
Yeah, don’t take booming blade as a monk.
The spell specifically says "make a melee attack" so I'd rule that you could
@@vikings-pistons sage advice rulings say otherwise, but you’re welcome to do that in your games.
Booming Bow:
Ammunition property allows you to make a melee attack instead (it becomes an Improvised weapon instead of a ranged weapon)
You can now use booming blade on any Ammunition property weapon.
Cons:
No Sneak attack(imp wpn)
No Archery Style(imp wpn)
No proficiency unless Feat
Uses Str and weapon is 1d4
Lov 80% of your video every time...
20% of intro(white noise) time just makes my eyes bleed.
Tbh the fact that there is lightning damage I think it’s dumb that they call it thunder just call it sound damage tbh it’s like if they made ALL sound Pokémon electric type cause it’s thunder (yes there is 2 sound Pokémon that are electric type but there are a lot that are normal)
Yeh they really should have named it better
noot noot

"a nice glove" as a weapon? lol
Right off the bat: 34.75 minutes for ONE CANTRIP is just silly, and an utter WASTE of time. PLEASE don't do this if you want views.
