    Soup is key, in my opinion. You can use an entire bunch of celery and two medium potatoes, and a litre and a half of vegetable stock, an onion, garlic, small chilli, throw in a bunch of kale at the end. Boil it up and blend it. Its obviously better in winter, but will keep you full like nothing else and tastes great every single time.

    I wasn't losing weight either with the 50-50 plate, even with no overt fats/eating whole plant foods. I've got about 25 pounds to lose. I read your book, and decided to temporarily weigh my veggies just to make sure I was getting at least 2 pounds/get a good eye for it (I actually do 2 pounds of veg in the morning, then my starch if I'm still hungry, and then I'll do about a pound of veg in addition to my starch for lunch and dinner) and I'm finally losing about a pound a week! I realized I wasn't eating as many veggies as I thought I was! 🤯

    According to my numbers I don't have pre-diabetes but I am pretty sure I am insulin resistant. I have always found eating oats for breakfast leaves me ravenously hungry two hours later. I'd rather eat nothing first thing. I have even found oat groats to be a problem, though not as bad as rolled oats/porridge. Vegetables leave blood sugar a lot more stable.

    Thank you, thank you for this honest reminder not to compare ourselves and our results with women forty younger than us (or men!). I wish McDougall, Forks over knives, etc in their marketing materials would rely less on the miracle stories (I lost 80 pounds in 6 months!) when the average person does not get such rapid results. It sets up unrealistic expectations (even when they have a disclaimer that not everyone will experience such dramatic results).
    Acknowledging our differences and accepting that it really is harder for some people to lose weight (As in they must be more strict in adherence to get any results) can be so healing to hear. It is not that we are lazy or that we must be cheating....some people really do need to strictly avoid SOS, nuts, healthy oils, trigger foods, if they are going to make any progress. We also need to be held accountable, and if adding in some healthy fat or some salt here or there or overemphasizing the starches then we need to own up to that and make changes.

    • @laurarauhauser2350
      @laurarauhauser2350 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes... I heard Dr. Lisle say once that we should do this as an experiment. "Let's see what would happen if..."
      I counted backwards 120 days from my birthday and decided to do WFPB, no SOS or processed foods for the whole 120 days. I'm 56 so I thought it would still be hard to lose weight, but I actually lost 40+ lbs in 4 months. I did this 100 % with no cheating, even on a vacation. I had never been able to do this before, but the experiment aspect of it with a certain amount of days made it doable. No arguments in my head about whether I should go off plan "just this once" because my experiment was seeing what would happen if I did this 100%.
      It also allowed me an explanation when people would ask why I couldn't have something. I just said I was choosing to do an experiment.

    I thought I knew this topic well but learned a lot here. The big takeaway for me is that the plate isn’t really 50% starch, it is 50% non-starchy veggies. Fruit, nuts, and everything that is not a non-starchy veg goes into the “starch” half of the plate.

  • @FirebreathingVegan1
    @FirebreathingVegan1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    "Do the least restrictive program that you can do that will get you the results you seek."
    And I'd add, an A+ diet can be different for different people. For example, some people can look amazing on starches with little vegetables, others need far more vegetables, some people need avocado and nuts. Each of these variations can give different individuals their perfect lean physique. It's why we have to experiment.
    Start with a less restrictive diet, try it for a long time, reevaluate, and then adjust your diet little by little. Often going from 0 to 100 can lead to accidentally undereating by so much that they find themselves binge eating and in a bad cycle. For so many coming from SAD, id recommend a fully starch diet and forget vegetables unless you want them. Adjust in a month if needed. Repeat.

  • @martyritz23
    @martyritz23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Chef AJ... I watch all your videos and love your TTAWL Summits! I just want to say that the Potatoes Only 🥔 diet is not a diet that is meant for someone to stay on long term, it's only meant to help people get off of the highly caloric, processed, SAD diet which has everyone enslaved in the food addiction/Pleasure Trap. I did Andrew's SpudFit Challenge and eating Potatoes Only 🥔 helped me cut out all my food addictions and reset my taste buds palet so that I would be able to successfully follow a WFPBNO diet thereafter. If I didn't do that prior to incorporating the WFPBNO diet (which I now follow), I never would hv stuck with it. It's easier to move up to eating tasty vegetables after a Potatoes Only diet than it is to move down to a -600 calorie dense diet if you're use to eating cake, ice cream, fast food etc. The Potatoes Only 🥔 idea is not meant to cut out vegetables forever as they can be reintroduced after we've given ourselves some time (1 month take or give) to get rid of our food addiction cravings, work on our relationship with food and clear our taste buds palet so that vegetables and starches taste good again (in contrast). Potatoes Only is not even about weight loss because it's not meant to be a long term thing. It's really only about changing our relationship with food and it's about cutting out our food addiction. I see it in the same light as water fasting at The True North facility. Both are just allowing people to take a time out from the food they've grown used to eating prior to the fast, so they can incorporate a new diet that is healthier after the month/week is over. Think of the Potatoes Only as nothing more than a bridge to get people from the SAD diet to the WFPBNO diet by using the abstinence model. I'm just mentioning all this because I don't think everyone really gets how food addiction is a real thing and why we need a way to get past it. Both water fasting or the Potatoes Only diet can be used successfully to break that food addiction cycle before making the transition from SAD to WFPBNO

    I'm 20 minutes in and have to pause to comment so I don't miss anything. First, I can't thank you enough for this video. Last August, I was hit by a car while crossing the Street and broke 3 bones in my foot. While laid up, I came across the 50/50 plate method and decided I would go that route. Now, prior to my accident, I had released just over 175lbs from my 4'11" frame and had about 30lbs or so left to get to a healthy state. I'm 54 and this 50/50 method, along with me allowing appetite stimulating condiments back in has resulted in adding 30lbs back to my 4'11" frame. I've been feeling like I'm flopping around trying to find my footing (so-to-speak) and I need to step back, go back to what TRULY worked for me and trust the process. Saying 'thank you' doesn't seem like enough, but I hope my gratitude comes through. Now, back to the video 😁

    I’m 32 (13 years vegan and three years vegetarian before that) and also a vegan, sober chef/pastry chef! I started weight and strength training a year ago and fell absolutely in love with running, too! Still trying to lose those last 10-15lbs that’s I’ve held onto since I was a teenager and, while I’ve been familiar with all the veg doctors for years and have read all the books, it still hasn’t stuck until recently. The scale is moving slightly (I’m also putting on a lot of muscle to compete in bodybuilding in a year) but I just wanted to say thank you so much for making these videos for us. Your passion and energy is very much appreciated! Hope you have a lovely holiday!

    I do like to snack though. However, I do not start my eating window until noon. I also try to be in bed early. But a medium sized sweet potato and a little less than a bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower is plenty for lunch for me. Too much food at once and I bloat. I am 5'5 and 115 lbs.

      @Karen L when people say they don’t like a certain vegetable, there’s the possibility that the source could have issues. We are so separated from how our food is grown to know all about how they are grown, etc. Organic, broccoli available in southern Florida vs that in Illinois, water issues (some water has sodium, iron, lead or arsenic in it, etc.). Eventually a grower may dig a deeper well to get better water. In Chef AJ’s monthly video with Dr McDougall (210906) he reminded us that crucifers have among the most high uptakes of whatever is in their growing environment.

    I have just recently bought the Starch Solution book and found you on TH-cam. I think i was understanding the 50/50 plate wrong after listening to you. So, to truly get a 50/50, would it be a pound of non starchy veggies and 1 pound of starches, eating veggies first?

    • @CHEFAJ
      @CHEFAJ  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It doesn't necessarily have to be a pound of each, but equal parts (visually) of non-starchy vegetables and minimally processed starches

    Oh Chef AJ I need ammo. I just became vegan about two months ago and I live in Texas and came home to Indiana for my grand baby twins one year bday. I told my family I am vegan and boy oh boy I thought I had done the research to back up my new exciting way of eating and living. I was wrong. I heard them say I wasn’t getting enough protein and the protein I was getting was not good. I shot back with what I learned from you and Drs mcdougal and Barnard and others. I was told I was becoming orthoanorexic 🤨 I heard so much crap and Going out to eat was awful. I asked for no cheese in my food and I got cheese! I was tired of sending my food back but I was being watched like a hawk. 🤦🏻‍♀️ will it get better ? I am coming back home in October and I wanna be lean mean and healthy. I need more ammo. I’m binge watching everything I can !

      Hi Pam, maybe they need to read one of the books. I have been vegan for ten years and am 67 years old with no meds. My bloodwork always indicates perfect protein levels every time. My trainer at the gym tells me my muscle strength is better than any of her other clients my age. My blood pressure is also excellent, as is my husband’s who eats this way also, as well as my daughter and son-in-law. Dr. McDougall has many of these examples on his website. They should start investigating instead of telling you something that they actually don’t really understand. Keep up the good effort!
