    You mentioned doing acid in the early 70's and walking into a showing of "El Topo" and getting your minds blown. Well, we did something similar. Myself and a couple buddies walked into a showing of "Clockwork Orange" on the premiere weekend. Yes, our minds were melted. And it was wonderful.

    Note to viewers: There is an exceptional Jodorowski boxed set available with restored versions of El Topo, Holy Mountain, and Fando y Lis.

      Yes, and it's amazing! Great special features and well done restoration... before that though... the only way to watch it was from a dubbed vhs version with japanese subtitles... nowadays with the internet you can find it easily... but back then... it was a secret gem... fantastic.

    You don't need drugs at all - just a basic knowledge of Eastern and Christian spiritual themes. El Topo himself = the ego as such or at least AN ego(much like the 'thief' in the Holy Mountain), wants to be the best and prove himself better than others, does 'good' acts to aggrandise the self, wants the woman, even equates himself with God. The desert he travels thru is what is called in Buddhism samsara - the reality we experience, an endless cycle of suffering, he even says the desert is a circle. The gunfighters are holy men who are more enlightened than he is, in besting them via deceptions that he becomes more and more aware are wrong he becomes the sum of them and their wisdom. When he becomes 'the best' gunfighter there are some powerfully symbolic shots of him being trapped within walls - he comes to realise the prison of the ego and egotistic pursuits The story is one of ego death (called satori in Zen Buddhism) and rebirth, as embraced when he shows 'stigmata' referencing the crucifixion. Now he we see him 'reborn' - now he appears as a Christ-like figure very different from El Topo, motivated by compassion and seemingly selfless, we're inclined to see this as real spiritual transformation. The deep part is how, when the Christ-mission too fails in misery, suffering, and death - he sees that *the Christ thing was just another ego trip, another iteration of the same eternal thing just more samsara with a different moral focus to disguise the futility. He thought he had achieved clarity when he decided to live for others, turns out being the saviour of these people was another identity to latch onto, that this too would 'die'. The man who once was known as El Topo finally sees the nature of things as they truly are, knows there is no escape from the unceasing suffering of existence but non-existence (called Nirvana in Buddhism) and opts for that nothingness, choosing to immolate himself. Then there's obviously some Platonic symbolism with the people trapped inside the cave and I never understood exactly the symbolism of his son (significantly the son is abandoned at the exact point his ego trip begins and the son seems to adopt and carry on his identity once after he has gone, is it God/son of God? idk).
    With the three-act structure this movie has, the first is kind of meh, the third in the town drags quite a lot tbh, but the second/middle act (detailing the journey thru the desert and the 4 gunfighters/holy men) is cult movie perfection to me.
    I find the straightforward (no, really) exploration of spiritual themes in this movie far more moving than the deconstruction of spirituality that is the Holy Mountain - though the Holy Mountain deserves real distinction for having the only *true* happy ending of any story imo. I find Fando y Lis maybe even more moving for some reason. Then everything else Jodorowsky made sucks imo - ppl say Santa Sangre is good, to me it's Hitchcock's Psycho directed by Fellini but nowhere NEAR as god as that sounds. Imagine getting Peter O' Toole and Omar Sharif together for the first time since Lawrence of Arabia and making..the Rainbow Thief. His three good movies are not by any coincidence the ones made with cinematographer Raphael Corkidi - textbook illustration of the relative over-celebration of directors over cinematographers.

    My group of friends had eaten fresh peyote buttons a few hrs before the movie started, at UC StaBarbara's Campbell Hall. I had no idea what the film was "about," but it became one of my all-time top 3 films, along with Bergman's WildStrawberries and Truffaut's The400Blows. Wow!
    Since I became a CultAnthro prof, I wound up re-experiencing the film several more times over the decades, and for me it's continued to keep its edge. For me it was a spiritual journey, with the path&outcome always uncertain...
    Enjoyed the reaction!

    I remember I had to order this film on ebay because you could not find it anywhere... certainly not at blockbuster or hollywood video... but even where they sold movies it was just not available... all there was, was this vhs copy dubbed in english with japanese subtitles lol.... that was one of the few ways you were able to see El Topo in the early 2000's ... the holy mountain was even harder to get... when they finally released the dvd sets of his films (not including santa sangre) I was sooo pleased... they did a great job restoring them, Especially the holy mountain... and great special features. But oh man... I still have that old japanese VHS version of el Topo... "those were the days..." man...

    I saw both El Topo and The Holy Mountain on the big screen the first time I saw them and frankly they were overwhelming in 35mm Cinescope. I didn’t write my review of The Holy Mountain until I saw it in a smaller format and could process what was going on. As soon as I see El Topo again, they’ll be in queue for a double feature on my show. Thank you for the review!

    Midnight films where great. I came into it in the early 80s with Dawn of The Dead by the mid 80s it was over mainly because of home video. In my area Orange County they were in mostly the UA theaters in malls, every screen had a different film usually Eraserhead, Basket Case, Heavy Metal, The Song Remains The Same, Quadrophenia, Fritz The Cat, Pink Flamingos, Polyester and of course Rocky Horror. It was always funny to me to see the different “heads” metal heads, punks, dorks, college kids (I was in HS) all on different highs 😂

    Ok, when you started to list who Jodorowsky allegedly is. “The guru” “reincarnated wiseman” etc. I could not continue watching. It is never right to idolize any single person. But I think in case of Jodorowsky especially this is misplaced. The man is an extremely arrogant and presumptuous liar. A number of people who know him have pointed out in interviews outside of the dune documentary that a lot of the things he said and claimed about it and about what happened are blatant lies. He also lied left and right to sensationalize his shitty film the Holy Mountain. Well, ok, I cannot say it is an objectively “shitty film”. But I can definitely say that it is an experiment which has not made film better overall. The only person it probably made happy is the director himself.
    I think people should have more self respect and not deify Jodorowsky.

    So unexpected to see a millenial review of this ancient artifact of meaningless spectacle in the search for meaning. I'd disagree with you only in calling this a film of the '70s. Although released in 1970 it was a product of the late '60s for sure...Altamont, maybe.

    I won’t watch this movie because Jodorowski literally admitted that he raped the girl in the desert sex scene.
    “When I wanted to do the rape scene, I explained to [Mara Lorenzio] that I was going to hit her and rape her. There was no emotional relationship between us, because I had put a clause in all the women's contracts stating that they would not make love with the director. We had never talked to each other. I knew nothing about her. We went to the desert with two other people: the photographer and a technician. No one else. I said, 'I'm not going to rehearse. There will be only one take because it will be impossible to repeat. Roll the cameras only when I signal you to [...] And I really... I really... I really raped her. And she screamed."
    This is absolutely deplorable and unjustifiable. For that reason I will never watch this movie.

      It has been proven that he lied about it for publicity regarding the film but it’s still odd to say you did something that horrific when you actually didn’t. But no the movie does not feature a real assault. If it did you wouldn’t be able to watch it.

    • @BrianMcInnis87
      @BrianMcInnis87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He later stated that he only said that to gain attention for the film, and the scene itself doesn't actually show any sexual contact between them. He's also made numerous claims about the making of his films which are obviously false, such as there only being, I forget, maybe three zooms in 'El Topo' when there are loads of them, and it's not remotely clear why he would state such obvious and inconsequential falsehoods. Mentally, I consider him a kind of insane child. My sense is that he was mentally abnormal from birth, and then the loads of drugs he did destabilized his mind further. At any rate, it's very possible he raped her, and he's certainly given voice to some terrible opinions, among them on his attitude towards women, at least at one point in his life.
      But no one should base which works of art one does and doesn't look at by the actions or opinions of the artists involved. In 'Come and See', a cow is killed with machine-gun fire on film. In 'Apocalypse Now', we witness a water buffalo being slaughtered, one of an entire truckload Coppola had killed to make sure he got the footage he wanted. These things should not have happened. But the greatness of a work is a thing separate from the moral nature of the actions of its artists, and should instead be judged on its own aesthetic and moral qualities. Jodorowsky may or may not belong in prison, but his films don't.
      Throughout the history of cinema, how many crew and cast members have, for instance, spanked or beaten their children after a day of shooting? How many musicians throughout the history of music? Probably quite a lot of them, and that's horrible. But that fact doesn't and shouldn't stop us from experiencing the finished artifacts our fellow humans produce. In 'Days of Heaven' Linda Manz's narration goes, 'Nobody's perfect. There was never a perfect person around. Ya just got half devil and half angel in you.' This is how I think of many artists, Jodorowsky among them.

    Learned something new today. My main familiarity with Jodorowsky is his recent work (specifically "Endless Poetry"), and it's nice that he keeps busy into his 90s. We'll see if Jean-Luc Godard and Clint Eastwood can keep similar levels of stamina, but that's doubtful if ... unlike Jodorowsky ... they don't have anything left to say.

    • @helvete_ingres4717
      @helvete_ingres4717 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think Jodorowsky has had anything to say for a long, long time - his work started to look like self-parody after Holy Mountain and the Dune that never was. I mean, he made a movie like the Holy Mountain which ultimately says there's nothing TO say or nothing you CAN say, so idk what you would expect him to say after that? Endless Poetry was a boring, self-indulgent and ugly film to me . El Topo, Holy Mountain (objectively) and Fando Y Lis (idk, I like it personally) all remain amazing though. Totally not by coincidence, these are the films he made with cinematographer Raphael Corkidi - textbook illustration of the relative over-celebration of directors over cinematographers.

    Listen, I think you are romanizing thing and a time which do not deserve to be romanticized. “Can you imagine being one of those sun rammed 70s kids?”, “can you imagine being in the 70s on acid”. Yes. Many people can literally imagine what it was like and they have written about it. I read at least 3 books about it written by the people who were there. The experience they had were pretty much exactly the same as it is for anybody taking it in the 00s. And 20 teens.

    Without the Holy Spirit within, filthy movies and ideas like this, in every sphere of life become attractive norms and man searches for answers and finds solutions that take him further in the darkness and the chaos, until the whole cycle is repeated again, but in an even more destructive way.
