I can't believe how much old Fizmos are going for. Damn near three thousand bucks! A buddy and me thought about getting this in high school but we each decided on another: two synths that are, like most electronics, worth substantially *less* today than when we bought them. This has such unique character and sound. We didn't know anything about different synthesis types: to me a synth was a synth. I wanted to make dark, rich music with lots of portamento and filters and... Bought a Korg ROM-pler workstation with very few synthesizer sounds and basically no filters (it had them, but they came across more as tone knobs). At least it was great for sequencing, and I eventually (summer after senior year) got rack mount synths with more "synth-y" sounds. My buddy wanted to record long, evolving arrangements and got... A fantastic Yamaha analog emulation the sounded amazing but had no sequencer to speak of. The two of us together could do what we wanted, but it's not like we wanted to leave each other's expensive synths at the other's house all the time. Not sure why I wrote all this, but damn does the Fizmo take me back.
What an incredible thing... Ensoniq's song of the Swan, but a so unique machine, unique design and sound engine that seems to be still exclusive to Ensoniq. They were innovative and had their own philosophy behind their instruments.
@@ksager123 in my opinion, yes. the best one-piece-of-hardware keyboard synth, i guess i would specify... cause crazy rooms filled with modules are even better. to clarify: by "best" i mean my favorite sounding.
also, i'd add that i'm not really a synth player and i don't have tons of experience playing and listening to many different synths... but looking back, yeah i think this one is my favorite. what other synths can do these types of sexy wonky psychedelic evolving sounds? there have to be others i just haven't checked out yet.
I have other oddballs that the Fizmo is often compared to like the Waldorf XTK but nothing sounds like the Fizmo. If you buy one now you should definitely look into the new editing software. It gives some more options and it's really nice to see what is all going on in a patch since a patch can basically be made up of 8 different synth engines. 4 layers and each layer has 2 "oscillators" which is really a wave or wave table, lfo, filter, egs, etc (an entire synth engine).
I had one of these. I do not remember it fondly, but listening to these sounds now, I think it might have just been me. A little shoddy build quality, tho.

It sounds like this synth's engine is a 486 with a loose ram stick being told to encode RealAudio files over and over. What a vibe.
Ah, good one! It really does have that weird encoder sound.
A mix of Super Nintendo and Windows 98 with, maybe, and iMac G3 feeling. The 90s are in this machine.
Some of these tones and sequences remind me of The Warriors game soundtrack. Very nice synth and programming!

I remember when it came out .... this synth made ensoniq go bankrupt....today it sounds like a dave smith synth, I guess it was way ahead of its time
Ensoniq was already out the door by the time the Fizmo came out.
As Tristan said, Ensoniq was already going. That is why not all functions are controllable through the panel and we only get a four-character display.
