Excellent review! I have the same bow, same weight, 40 lbs. You're right about it being finicky, but once you find the sweet spot it's quite a shooter. I even find the bow to sing a pleasant hum when it's set up properly.
Awesome my friend! I'm thinking of comparing fastflite FT and Dacron FT strings to see if it makes any performance differences. I imagine the difference to be minimal at best. I ordered the Galaxy 62" hybrid longbow at 50#. I've been building my strength up and think I can handle the 50#. A great little recurve you might want to check out is the Old Mountain Stygian 56" recurve. I've had one for about a month and it's so much fun to shoot. Keep up the good work. Much appreciated.

Ya my bear montana guys said was a hand shock monster and I never shot it without one but I had the selway slide on quiver and honestly the bow was pretty dead on the shot. Guys said I was crazy that I didnt feel much shock and I kinda figured it was from adding that quiver. Rubber and weight likely helped it out some.
Always been interested in longbows, ever since I first watched Errol Flynn play Robin Hood. You know, Howard Hill actually made the "split arrow" shot in the movie. You can see him step up to the line as another competing archer. I have a few re-curves and a compound bow and I'll probably buy a longbow commercially at some point, but in the meantime, I'm going to try my hand at making my own laminated version, as well as a carved "stick-bow". Hopefully, they'll turn out well enough to actually shoot.

I use 3M clear auto bra tape for a striker plate. It's thin so you get the arrow a hair more towards center and is super easy to apply. A roll lasts a very, very long time.

hi, nice bow ! sorry but the handle grip looks exactly the same shape and colour that the 66" Bearpaw Blackfoot is galaxy a builder or, like Jakalope in Germany a customizer (of Oak Ridge and Bodnik bows) ? i think the second choice... am i wrong ?
Galaxy is a bow design and building company. I believe they are also known as Big Rock, but I may be mistaken about that. They are manufactured in China and distributed through various retailers. Lancaster carries a large selection of their products, which is where I picked up the one I have. Hi Scott, Nice and informative review. I Am looking for that kind of bow, and your review was helpfull. About the handshock: I think (as far I can see on the vid) you use a fairly thick/heavy string and you mentioned its a B50. In the past I had good results with a (very) light string, using FF and an minumum of strands. It makes the bow much more silent en because the mass of the string is reduced, its momentum is reduced too......resulting in less handshock. Perhaps it will help. Cheers Pulanka

I just bought this bow from Lancaster Archery. Mine is 45#. I concur with everything mentioned in this video. My hair rest is different and has no issues. I don't mind the square back it helps me locate my fingers. My experience: I have tried fast flight strings and I can NOT shoot this bow with anything other than B-50 or maybe B-55 (haven't tried that). Anything other than the factory string produces to much vibration and WAAAAAY too much noise. This is with full length cat wiskers. Beaver Balls make almost no change. My Hoyt Super Slam Legacy (compound and shot with a release tab) is much quieter and smoother than this bow with a fast flight string. I shoot with a Selway slide on quiver and that thing gives me nothing but fits. It slides off/loose on the limbs constantly and the foam is already wore out and wont grip a field point at all. I find myself constantly messing with it, and that one spot that holds the Zwickey is totally blown out now. I feel the bow is a better bargain than the quiver. I don't like the quiver at all. It's also the quiver made for flat limbed long bows. I shoot a 540 grain Easton Carbon Legacy 500 spine. 28.5" draw. 165fps through a chronograph (Fast flight was 4-5 fps faster. Absolutely not worth the noise and vibration). This set up is a little weak spine just a little. I'm shooting 150gr points and it shoots the Zwickey Eskimos excellently. I believe those with the threaded insert are under 150 and that's probably why they are flying so nicely. I did shoot this one next to a 40# Slick Stick. The Slick Stick was definitely nicer, but I wanted something longer and heavier draw. Plus this is my entry into traditional. I shoot this bow what I consider excellently to 20 yards. 30 yards on a good day, and have dropped many arrows into the kill zone on my deer target at 40. Overall I really like the bow and when the quiver is snugged up and the arrows all situated nice it shoots very good, quiet and smooth. I shoot it very well. I have a 52# ASL that was just a bit too much weight to start. Bad habits were sneaking in. Getting this bow has made a HUGE difference in my ability and confidence. The big takeaway for me was dropping 6# of draw weight made a HUGE improvement in my shooting pleasure. When I put a fast flight string on it the noise and vibration make my shooting go all to hell - it just goes straight into my head. It's just not the experience I want shooting ANY bow. Take care.
There are kits available if you want to go the laminated bow route, but, you will have to make the mold that you will use as your lamination "platform" so to speak. Then there's the hardware you'll need to apply equal pressure to the laminations as they cure...then there's the heat box or electric heat strip to cure the epoxy properly. Then, you need to rough cut the finished blank into a rough bow shape (I have a bandsaw) before you start sanding. (Hope I haven't put you off completely at this point). I consider it a challenge as I'm not an expert bowyer, but I want to do it anyway. Stick bows are not quite as involved as it's all hand tools and patience, patience, patience, especially when you get to the tillering process. But if you're careful and you end up with a working bow, I imagine it's very satisfying (and potentially addictive).

The reason modern bows have hand shock is because they are so light. Heavier arrows absorb alot of that. Shoot heavier wood arrows. Short sight windows is for instinctive shooting.
Absolutely correct. I've been considering increasing arrow weight and possible wooden shafts as well. Longbow-heavy wood arrows! Every time I hear somebody complain about hand shock I know they are compound shooters. I bought an SAS longbow (45#, 68inches) and use the Chinese arrows of 700 gr and notice no hand shock at all. All the little girls complain about the hand shock of this bow!
I have 2 Howard Hill archery longbows. 68” & 70” both 40 lbs @ 38”. Very quiet don’t need silencers. You get what you pay for. Custom bows perform better.
