  • Widely regarded as one of the greatest Barbershop quartets ever, The Suntones, our 1961 International Quartet Champion, perform their beautiful rendition of “Danny Boy” on the 50th anniversary of their win in 2011 in Kansas City. Singing solo, Gene Cokeroft's legendary tenor voice was eclipsed only by his colossal heart and his desire to spread the joy of music to every corner of the world.

Gene Cokeroft, even at age 75, could run rings around tenors in their prime. He was a wonderful voice and an equally wonderful human being. May God bless his family, and may he rest in peace.

We've lost one of the greats today. He'll continue his incredible life work by inspiring people through recordings like this.

I saw them live with my parents in @1975....when they did this song I was blown away. They also did a Fiddler on the roof medley that was amazing. The person singing lead here was normally the tenor.

I did not have the honor of meeting Gene Cokecroft, but I know his son, Bruce, and I know Harlan Wilson (Baritone of the Suntones) and I know what kind of people these are. Thanks Gene for, not only a great quartet and great quartet memories, but great family and friends. They are truly gentlemen and ladies.

I was there for this performance. It's still the only time a singer has brought me to tears.

What a special memory this will be for Gene's family. Thank you for sharing it with we FB barbershop.org members !
My dear Dad, Duane, was very blessed to have been a member of the Badger Chordhawks Chorus, in southern Wisconsin for many years; however, with a long gap in between (to raise us, Mom and Dad's 4 daughters). But, he was extremely honored to have been involved with what was then called "The Jvl.Chorus", way back in 1955, when they were invited to go to the International Contest in Florida. Well, it was definitely "meant to be", as they became the International Gold Medal Championship Barbershop Chorus that year !!! When my Dad was able to re-join that chorus many years later, when he retired from his job as a full-time Night shift Custodian with the local school district; I could sense that he had more joy in his life again. :) He truly loved singing with "the guys" again ! I found out later that the chorus got together and brought some very special surprises to my Dad, and another returning member during their Annual Chorus Banquet. Apparently, the official Gold Medals for becoming International Champions did not exist back in 1955 yet. So, during their banquet that year, the chorus showed these 2 men how proud they were of them, by secretly obtaining, and then, presenting these men with the Gold Medals which they earned way back in the summer of 1955 !!! Then, my Dad made it his priority to find the other members of that particular award winning chorus, and to send their gold medals to each one of the men who never received one, either. He mailed out several of them to either the men, or to their families; to be sure that they would not miss out on the honor of having their own Gold Medal ! What a wonderful gift ! But, that was what my Dad was like; a very caring Christian man. :)

I grew up in Miami, and was stoked whenever the Suntones performed on Jackie Gleason's show in Miami Beach. I was entering college when Suntones won. It took me another 31 years to get into barbershop, but the hook was set in the late 50's. Listening to the Suntones would surely make Jackie say "How sweet it is."

Rest in peace Gene from Ray Snyder, Miamians alumni 1978-1981. You always kept us laughing with your introduction "The Miamians" under the direction of Gene Coldcrotch"
