The original made me feel so intense, no other movie has ever had such an impact on me and I've watched all sorts. I felt physically sick, sad and it impacted me for weeks. That is pure art.
Your review, especially the part where you talked about differences in the culture that impose behavioral patterns, is spot on. When people criticize that the parents in the Danish movie are too passive, they don’t fully realize that how people respond to things in the U.S. is different from that in other countries, especially secluded ones like Northern Europe. And that’s what made that movie unique and impactful. American ending was such a typical “happy ending super heroes kill them all” thing, that it was almost annoying. And it killed the whole DNA of the movie, IMHO. Same as some might think being so passive is not realistic, having a couple kill all the villains with “a poop and a stick” would not be any more realistic. How many of us are trained assassins or proficient in combat? Just some food for thought.
It definitely felt like the director was disturbed by the bleak ending of the original (as we all were) and decided to "fix" it with a Hollywood ending. I was so frustrated with the trailers and the fact it was being remade, but honestly I did end up enjoying it much more than I thought I would (at least as a thriller). The scene that really got me was when they were tied up and being forced to send all their bank info and create excuses for them being gone. Just the hopelessness of that situation knowing they were going to be murdered soon, I found it terrifying. I thought the following parts of them fighting back and hiding in the house were pretty tense too. But I really didn't like the ending where everyone makes it out almost unscathed. It really lacked a punch and the zoom into Ant's face was kind of awkward. The scene in the original where the Dad stumbles across him floating dead in the pool was so disturbing. I would have preferred a halfway point between the two endings. Maybe Agnes' tongue still could have gotten cut out but then they manage to escape? It would still show the consequences of the couple being so passive but not AS bleak as the original lol.
I agree! Making the ending in this one like they did, totally ruined the point of the movie. Yes, the OG ending was A LOT, but to entirely change it like they did just feels like they chickened out. Me and my friend where both very disappointed.
Great idea about the tongue. The family was terrorized this time but got out without much damage. If Agnes’ tongue was gone they’d have to live the rest of their lifes knowing where their passiveness got them!
Honestly, I liked it. Tongues getting cut off are the only thing that I don't fuck with in horror movies so I never watched the original (though I heard it's very good!). When I heard that didn't feature in this one, I went to watch it, knowing that it'd be a worse version of it, but I ended up liking it and it was a good Sunday afternoon for me.
Is it just me but I don’t enjoy disturbing films with dark endings. So I’m gonna check it out on streaming, because the original ending made me not want to watch it, same with Eden Lake.
I really didn’t like it. It gave off the vibe that they saw a lot of the complaints of the first one and were trying to ‘fix’ it. Like they had James McAvoy explaining in great detail how no one will ever know that the family is missing and that they’re robbing them and they gave a reason WHY they were taking the kids. Like yea the original doesn’t make a lot of sense if you think about it but it’s also an allegory. It’s a fucked up fairy tale (the dads even reading the little girl a fairy tale in the beginning). It’s like if the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood stopped everything to explain why he was going through all this effort of tricking Red instead of just eating her. Stories can be an exaggeration of reality to impart a theme, they don’t have to be 100% realistic and I didn’t feel like any of the explanations added anything
I'm Danish, and couldn't get through the original movie. The cultural 'polite, awkward silence', works a lot better in comedies. One example is the Danish version of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It just doesn't work for a tense horror-y thriller.
I'm German, and can tell that toxic positivity is not just a stereotypical Danish problem. The original is an astonishingly well-done parable in this regard.
I think that's exactly why it did work. Through most of the original, I suspected it was some kind of avant garde black comedy. In a way, it was. The fun of it was how it challenged audiences to the point where they almost couldn't take it. That's what made it fresh and unique. It was innovative and proved that you could still break new ground in horror. The original was easily one of the best horror films that came out that year for this reason.
I might watch this because of Mackenzie Davis, but it is disappointing that they changed the ending. It's what made the original so memorable. I also enjoyed social commentary of 'keep being polite and swallowing shit until you're literally murdered even though you're pretty sure they're murderers, but we can't be impolite and not eat this shit sandwich!', it feels relevant in the current political climate. If the protagonists escape that ruins it...
Absolutely agree with everything you said. The original was just more shocking & left you thinking about that ending for days, while the remake tied up everything in a pretty bow & you go “oh, a good movie, predictable ending, but ok”. James McAvoy was the purpose of this movie, amazing acting as usual. It didn’t have to be so straight forward at the end; I knew a happy ending was coming because the daughter *spoiler* took that needle when it dropped so I KNEW she was gonna jab Paddy with it & then it would be over. So I liked the original more.
100% a one time watch. Not gory or so explicit (except for a couple of times near the end) but I felt so so much hopeless anxiety and SO angry. I was in a bad mood for a few days because I wanted to help. These aren't real people but this happens to women all the time. Too polite. Too patient. Too naive. And then they get destroyed. Ugh, I can't even deal.
I saw the movie with my boyfriend and I had no idea it was a remake until I saw the reviews beforehand and looked it up. 85% I was surprised by because you know the deal with horror remakes they tend to be dogshite but this was WOW a pleasant surprise and breath of fresh air. James McAvoy is GREAT in the horror genre, I was genuinely scared of him in this 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I really enjoyed this movie actually! I thought it was gonna be bad because I was not a fan of the original! Love your videos!! Can't wait for the next one:)
Not me thinking this was a sequel and not a remake lol tbh I only saw one or two trailer. I actually thought it was gonna be like a trilogy:🙊🙉🙈 I guess I wasn't paying attention at all 😂😂😂
I'm so confused by the general reception of this film because my friend and I went to see it the other week, and we both felt that it was so incredibly clear it was a horror comedy. The tension built up at the start was definitely a thriller/horror, but about halfway through we could stop laughing, because it was so over the top and satirical. A lot of people in our cinema laughed as well. I personally feel like through the lens of satire and a more tongue in cheek approach, this movie was actually quite excellent. The original was grim, and has a great moral that it takes to its full potential, but the remake feels like a completely different movie, that almost makes fun of the main couple for their inaction and passiveness which (as a Scandi) is a completely valid thing to mock, and can equally make for a great premise. So it's a different approach, a different tone, to address the same moral issue. Personally I preferred the remake as a light watch, whereas the original is a 'one time watch' as you said, but great nonetheless.
I went into this movie last night almost completely blind. Surprisingly, I had only seen the trailer once ,months ago, and had honestly forgotten it until about 20 minutes into the film when I was like “oh yeah!” I saw the original today, a few hours ago. My initial reaction (unpopular opinion apparently) is that while some elements were more successful in the original…the remake was just better at making me feel uncomfortable, anxious, and afraid. McAvoy is more intimidating, the cinematography is better at communicating that awkward moment, and MOST OF ALL that the children are real characters in their own right in the remake and not just the set decorations they are in the Danish version. I appreciate the remake for making the children people too especially since they are what the antagonists ultimately want. Including the children in the plot actually made me care about this family in a way I just didn’t in the original. The Danish ending made me sad but I really didn’t give a f*ck about that family. Both child actors in the remake did a phenomenal job. I haven’t seen ANY review even mention them at all. Their inclusion makes a major difference IMO.
As is typical, with very few exceptions, when a great foreign movie is remade for an English-speaking audience, it gets watered down, typically trying to please the audience and not upset them too much. Basically, when you hear that a remake is being made, what is really being communicated is to go and find the original because it's so good that it has been decided to be made again.
I'd say us English people are more like the Scandinavian people. Most of us hate the idea of inconveniencing people, like you could get our order totally wrong at a restaurant and we'd nod and thank you 😂 I definitely resonated with the original. I won't be seeing the remake
This movie was absolutely better then most horror movies this year. By far. I didn't care for the original & the cast in the new movie is better. James McAvoy always plays a sinister villian brilliantly. He needs an Oscar for something, so I can finally get some sleep 😴🌟
it's kind of funny because James Watkins' Eden Lake definitely inspired the original director while making *Speak No Evil*, and now James Watkins is the one directing the remake. Hahaha. FULL CIRCLE MOMENT
Was enjoyable, I also prefer the OG movie The trailer was very telling; I was like..are they really showing the boy doing that hand gesture?! And having seen the original I knew what it meant ment..
I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. I didn’t think it was amazing, but I actually liked it more than the original. I think I’m just personally getting burnt out on bleak or nihilistic endings, I was happy they went another route.
I went into the movie not knowing of the previous one. i loved it but i am bias i love james mcavoy :) love to hear different perspectives! i agree that trailer is forever etched into my brain lol
just an insight as someone from the Netherlands who has seen the original film. I notice that the Dutch come out as quite rude people. and that is not entirely true, the Dutch are generally straightforward and can therefore appear rude, but that is why the difference between the two population groups, but that is mainly the difference between the areas of Europe. the difference between Scandinavia and Western Europe and not so much between the two countries
For me everything in the remake is better except the ending, which is still good and satisfying in its own way, especially because of the performance of the young boy actor who earns it. The acting and dialogue were way better in the remake, aside from maybe the sub lead in the original. The original becomes unbelievable by its climax, while the remake is very believable if you are famliar with the current superficial social niceties and polite society mores common in the US and UK.
as someone who watched the remake first, I thought this was such a fun and uncomfortable thriller! I did appreciate the bleakness of the original, but I also feel like that tone separates it from the remake enough to warrant a US release targeting more mainstream moviegoers
Aww...I haven't seen the original, but I know what happens because I watched the Foundflix video on it. I like a happier ending. I didn't want the little girl to lose her tongue.
Hope you don't mind if I just copy and paste my LB review 😅: AHAHAHA They actually pulled a Descent US Cut ending change LOL What is it with US Audiences and rejecting these original intended endings lol. That have meaning as well lol Ok sure it doesn't exactly just change the ending but the entire third act and sure it would be even worse had they remade the film entirely beat for beat and did nothing different so sure. If you enjoyed the first hour of this then I implore you to seek out and watch the original film. The entire first hour of this is a line for line and beat for beat redux of the original film, and even speed-runs it a bit as well. It is no where near as effective as the original but is decent, but it does actually fit with what follows in this film. The ending of the second act and the entire third act are completely change (the final 50 minutes). This film actually somewhat justifies it's existence by offering a completely different experience to that of the original. Sure that means it is a bit more of a traditional and dumbed down thriller and certainly much more commercial than the incredibly dark, depressing and bleak original. They have aged up the children in this version which leads to some really strange and annoying moments that are carried over from the original film, but in the original the kids were like 4 or 5 years old and in this they're like 9-12 years old, so these crying fits and being super annoying no longer makes sense. This is mostly aimed towards the girl. The reason that they have done this is to provide the first big change that dominoes the rest of the film to taking a different path and that is that the boy is old enough and smart enough to now communicate to the girl what is happening and this is the big divergence: the family finds out much earlier and stages a fight back. The third act is pure carnage and ultimately it is pretty satisfying and enjoyable, although admittedly I did mutter to myself at one point that "this film has gone off the rails". It has and it does indeed go pretty far off the rails, at least i suppose in my estimation of where i thought it possible for the film to go. It was during the third act that i came to the ultimate realisation and conclusion and that was this film was being intentionally humorous. Things that I had thought were silly and stupid were intentional attempts at being humorous and it was actually working. The over-the-top nature of the film was intentional and supposed to be funny and absurd. The film is certainly part comedy and maybe the whole film is just a black comedy instead of a thriller at all and its certainly not a horror film and certainly not in the way that the original film is quite literally a descent into HELL. Basically the third at goes full Scream instead of full Vanishing. I went in cynical, but i came out and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It pales to the first film, which wasn't perfect but it had something to say and a vision of where it wanted to take and what it wanted to tell its audience. It's all stripped into a more generic film, but whereas the original is bleak and depressing, this one ends up being the complete opposite. In typical American style they flipped the film on its head to make it something much more entertaining, complete with moments to cheer for and an ending to satisfy every viewer, but stripping out almost everything that made the original effective and removes all thought and difficulty from the film. Some other missteps are that in this version there is much less reason for them to freak out and leave the house in the middle of the night and much less reason for them to turn back and return to the house than there was in the original. Both because they tone down the weirdness and speed-run the events and because the child is supposed to be much older so her whining over going back for a toy were MUCH MUCH more annoying and basically not sympathetic at all, whereas a 5 year old in the original makes much more sense. They also made the American wife in this one really annoying and unlikable for the first half of the film, they do rectify this, but it doesn't feel fully earned but it is strange that they decided to make the lead couple much less likeable than in the original and then to give them the much lighter ending feels weird. Somehow a Blumhouse film of all films is another film that Blink Twice could learn from (god that movie sucks more and more as it goes around in my brain.) It is weird because in some ways I want to say this isn't a remake and just takes the concept and in some ways I want to say that it is a word for word pointless remake. That is because of course it is both. The first hour of the film is an almost sot for shot redux of the original film, the most pointless of remakes, but then the last half of the film is an entirely different film and justifies it's existence by providing us with something different, an alternative version to the original. i want to say that it just takes the concept of the original and then does it's own thing, but of course it is taking much more than that. It is strange to have a film that is half full remake and then completely changes into its own thing for the back half, honestly i can't really think of another one. But it feels like an alternate version of the original that is interesting and worth while to explore, even if it disregards what works from the first film, but it introduces it's own elements that do work. Cynically I just want to say that this film remakes the original just so that it can change the ending and the outcome of the film to please audiences, and maybe that is true. But i am giving this film the benefit of the doubt and make no mistake with the 3/5 rating I am giving it I am giving it much more leeway than I usually would a remake of this type, but we haven't quite gotten to the one thing that makes this film work just yet...... Of course it is James McAvoy giving an immaculate performance that is equal to that of a Nicolas Cage or Dennis Hopper performance (and I do NOT take saying this lightly in the SLIGHTEST!). A new actor for me to start following as he gives an utterly mesmerisingly insane performance in this film. He truly holds the film together and makes all of the humour work. He knows what he is doing in this film. ALSO greatest cinematic use of acclaimed song COTTON EYED JOE and hilariously Eternal Flame is used in the funniest way and in the greatest scene of the year 😂 I enjoyed it, but I wish I didn't have to sit through a BTEC retelling of the first film for the first hour though. Highly recommend the original film it is, as I say, a completely different experience. This one is entertaining and alright, but the original is harrowing and pretty good. They changes the ending 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Of course they did 😂😂😂 'Merica!! 😂😂😂 Also those that complain about the yellow 'Mexico' filter should shut up because nothing was more offensive than the aggressive GREY desaturation filter they put on when they cut to the UK 😭😭
SPOILER!! in the marketing they show this clip of the boy making a scissor movement in front of his face.. that was a mistake. I hadn’t seen the original, but about 20 minutes in I was like “something’s not right.. did they cut his tongue out??” so then the whole surprise was kind of ruined for me unfortunately
I watched the original recently and the Dutch was never subtitled (I'm not sure if that's always the case). The language barrier and the Danish family's obvious politeness made it really unsettling to watch... I don't see how it could work with both families always speaking the same language.
Can we just stop with the remakes and poorly made movies please. Like I feel this year has been more about trying to recreate what was already done with success and aiming for the same amount of hype. And we watch it because well we arecurious but it ends up being a disappointment.

Same as some might think being so passive is not realistic, having a couple kill all the villains with “a poop and a stick” would not be any more realistic.
How many of us are trained assassins or proficient in combat?
Just some food for thought.
Anything with James mcavoy in get my vote 😅😊 every movie is just a movie
Shockingly I prefer the remake. But the ending/final act of the original is MUCH more impactful in the long run…
Is it just me but I don’t enjoy disturbing films with dark endings. So I’m gonna check it out on streaming, because the original ending made me not want to watch it, same with Eden Lake.
I swear. Back in May each time I went to the movies I could not get away from the Speak no Evil trailer.
Much as I expected. I'll be passing on this. Seeing the original just the once was all I needed.
A rare glimpse of sarah wearing white lol i will deffinatly watch this at home when it streams somewhere
Why is definitely being spelled defiantly as of late?
This trailer!!! Haha it’s so funny you said that cause yes this trailer was everywhere!
I'm Danish, and couldn't get through the original movie. The cultural 'polite, awkward silence', works a lot better in comedies. One example is the Danish version of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It just doesn't work for a tense horror-y thriller.
Exactly
I'm German, and can tell that toxic positivity is not just a stereotypical Danish problem. The original is an astonishingly well-done parable in this regard.
I think that's exactly why it did work. Through most of the original, I suspected it was some kind of avant garde black comedy. In a way, it was. The fun of it was how it challenged audiences to the point where they almost couldn't take it. That's what made it fresh and unique. It was innovative and proved that you could still break new ground in horror. The original was easily one of the best horror films that came out that year for this reason.
It clearly worked with the original because it’s one of the most successful international horror films in the last couple years.
I always bolt to your channel after i see a new horror movie. Love your content & your hair color it’s really pretty lol
THE INTRO PLSSSS
Third! lol Excited to hear allllll your thoughts on this one! 😂
Whats funny to me is i only saw one trailer for it once, when i went to see Strange Darling.
Sarah this set up is beautiful, I love this for you
omg i’m so glad to hear everyone else is sick of the trailer too 😅😅😅
I seen the original movie and thought it was different not necessarily scary but eerie. I haven’t decided on going to see the remake.
They had to have a Hollywood ending
they are doing the ending of the original IRL though
I actually thought it was gonna be like a trilogy:🙊🙉🙈
I guess I wasn't paying attention at all 😂😂😂
I'm so confused by the general reception of this film because my friend and I went to see it the other week, and we both felt that it was so incredibly clear it was a horror comedy.
Forgot to say but your new setup slaps btw 👍
As is typical, with very few exceptions, when a great foreign movie is remade for an English-speaking audience, it gets watered down, typically trying to please the audience and not upset them too much. Basically, when you hear that a remake is being made, what is really being communicated is to go and find the original because it's so good that it has been decided to be made again.
I'd say us English people are more like the Scandinavian people. Most of us hate the idea of inconveniencing people, like you could get our order totally wrong at a restaurant and we'd nod and thank you 😂 I definitely resonated with the original. I won't be seeing the remake
Another foreign film I can think of which had a remake was the Vanishing. The original had a downer ending while the remake had a happy ending
I love the remake it's my favourite horror of the year and it's because of the ending. The original ending was too much for me 😔
This movie was absolutely better then most horror movies this year.
Thank you for this review! I ran straight to Shudder to watch the original, which was amazing!!
Sounds like they should have just used james mcavoy in the original
Of how this movie is getting all this attention but substance is so good and amazing and it needs more attention on it
I still wanna see this, I love James mcavoy!! I didn’t know this was a remake either!
just an insight as someone from the Netherlands who has seen the original film.
Thumbs up for the ‘Blair Witch’ poster 👍
Agree with you completely. I'm still puzzled as to why I even went to the cinema😅 Just a horror, however with great performances.
Just saw it yesterday and we loved it !!
Aww...I haven't seen the original, but I know what happens because I watched the Foundflix video on it.
I like a happier ending. I didn't want the little girl to lose her tongue.
Reminds me of the remake of The Vanishing. They change the ending to make it lighter compare to original that is really dark and haunting.
Your hair looks really nice
I loved this remake.
The Ring was also remade in America within a short amount of time. I think like 4 years!
Hope you don't mind if I just copy and paste my LB review 😅:
AHAHAHA They actually pulled a Descent US Cut ending change LOL
What is it with US Audiences and rejecting these original intended endings lol. That have meaning as well lol
Ok sure it doesn't exactly just change the ending but the entire third act and sure it would be even worse had they remade the film entirely beat for beat and did nothing different so sure.
Somehow a Blumhouse film of all films is another film that Blink Twice could learn from (god that movie sucks more and more as it goes around in my brain.)
It is weird because in some ways I want to say this isn't a remake and just takes the concept and in some ways I want to say that it is a word for word pointless remake.
ALSO greatest cinematic use of acclaimed song COTTON EYED JOE and hilariously Eternal Flame is used in the funniest way and in the greatest scene of the year 😂
I enjoyed it, but I wish I didn't have to sit through a BTEC retelling of the first film for the first hour though.
Highly recommend the original film it is, as I say, a completely different experience. This one is entertaining and alright, but the original is harrowing and pretty good.
They changes the ending 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Of course they did 😂😂😂 'Merica!! 😂😂😂
Also those that complain about the yellow 'Mexico' filter should shut up because nothing was more offensive than the aggressive GREY desaturation filter they put on when they cut to the UK 😭😭
the edit at 0:04 made me laugh out loud in the library earlier 😭
It was very good. Didn't see the original saw the trailers. loved it
SPOILER!!
in the marketing they show this clip of the boy making a scissor movement in front of his face.. that was a mistake.
I agree with everything you said! I feel they don’t know how to make trailers anymore, you watch the whole movie as the trailer 🙄🤣
I love our collective disdain for the trailer, lol
The original is so good as it is, no remake could come close
That ending is so cute. Have to survive! FFS be logical, be real and brutal. This is not something you will survive. Deal with it.
I’ve never seen the original but I really enjoyed this film tbh!
i wanna hear your thoughts on strange darling! its really good and the sound track is a masterpiece
Can we just stop with the remakes and poorly made movies please. Like I feel this year has been more about trying to recreate what was already done with success and aiming for the same amount of hype. And we watch it because well we arecurious but it ends up being a disappointment.
I understand what you’re saying, and I mostly agree… but we have gotten some of the best original unique horror movies the last few years. I feel like we are at a pretty good balance of original horror and sequels/remakes/etc., especially because the remakes and sequels we’ve been getting have actually been pretty good. The First Omen is my favorite movie of the year, and I never in a million years thought I’d be saying that.
i loved this idgaf
