  • Once we had settled on which RV we were going to buy, we wanted a way to figure out what would fit into the RV storage areas once we were ready to move in. It's one thing to have the measurements, but another thing to figure out what can go INTO those spaces. We came up with this simple hack, and it was a HUGE help!

    This trick is amazing... now, if only the measurements of the 397th were all listed somewhere. Our local dealer NEVER has one in stock. They keep selling before they reach the lot due to this weird fluctuation in the demand for campers.
    I have been searching EVERYWHERE for the exact width of the inside of the garage and the depths of each cabinet in the rv. Hoping they have one come in soon so I can run in and measure EVERYTHING lol

    We have started the downsizing process to move into our soon to come 5th wheel.
    We have our bed, small chest of drawers, loveseat with recliners and TV.
    We have sold a ton of stuff on Facebook marketplace. Very good luck so far.
    Love y'alls info and tips!
    Question? When and where do you wash your RV? Campsite, carwash, or what?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Getting rid of everything can be fun when you're not rushed! I use this kit and LOVE it! amzn.to/2U4qQHR I can wash/wax the whole rig in about 2 hours. 3, if there are a lot of bugs on the cap. Maybe 4, if I want to really detail beyond what I can do with the wedge tools in this kit. And it's a "dry" wash, so you can even use it in the majority of parks that don't allow washing, or charge extra to allow you to wash with water.
      We've had the rig cleaned twice at a truck wash. The first one was not a Blue Beacon and they scratched it up a bit (very light brush marks), after which we had it washed and waxed professionally to remove the scratches.
      More recently, the rig was VERY dirty from dust storms and we tried a Blue Beacon truck wash. That one did a great job on the rig AND truck for $44. Will use them again, and maintain using our wash-wax-all kit.

    Wow! I am glad I found your channel. We are planning to full time when I retire in 2020. I have a 2007 FLHRC Road King Classic that my wife( recently remarried) and I ride now... I cannot afford a TH like yours so if I cannot figure out a way to travel full time with my bike, then ( I hate to even think) I may have sell Genesis(my new beginning). I bought her when my wife of 38 yrs passed away from Cancer. Thus Genesis.
    We have also narrowed our fifth wheel rig to a GD Solitude S-class 3350RL. I was searching for a GD owner to see how well they liked their rigs and how the company handled their(your) warranty issues. We have heard nothing but good about the GD company and have decided that we are willing to forego some features to live in a rig that is backed by the manufacturer.
    I really like this idea using the blue painter's tape..what a genius idea.
    safe travels...
    Rick

      Glad you found us too! 😀 Funny you talk about service. Had an issue with our furnace (discovered on a cold night boondocking in OH last week). A 5 minute phone call to GDRV, got a case number and authorization for a mobile tech. Tech just left and all is well! I'll cover the $50 service fee and GDRV will reimburse us for the rest! GDRV is so easy to work with! When shopping for rigs, be sure to ignore the "sale" prices. Even though our rig's MSRP was 127K, we paid closer to 90K. Hope you don't have to sell Genesis!!! Good luck with your search and feel free to reach out any time for questions or whatever! Thanks for watching! 😊

      @Z71Silverad0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply...I am glad you have found GD easy to work with..that has become my number one priority. Working with a Manufacturer that stands behind the product they make..they are not cheap rigs...;)
      I just watched a video about the hitches they are putting on the GD Solitudes. they are now rated for 3000lb tow ..I am going to look into what I may be able to add either trailer(not a fav idea)...or some type of lift..
      thanks again.

    Really wish we could have used this tip as we have 61 days to full retirement and our FT-RV adventure....BUT, our Riverstone 37FLTH is still under construction and NO dealer in Colorado carries the RS series....so we are going to have to "Wing" it....pun intended as we will be carrying our Gold Wing with us. That said, as we are going through the moving out of S&Bs now, we know this TIP would have been great if we were able to get all the measurements. Again, GREAT tip shipmate....looking forward to more. v/r, TS - Denver, FTCM(SW) USN(Ret)

    Love this tip, such a great idea!!! We currently live in an apartment so we don’t have an extra room to use, but having the dimensions would definitely be helpful. We are just now starting to go through things to downsize. I have a harder time with that than my boyfriend, but keeping our goal in mind. Any more tips and tricks or even advice you have I would love to hear them since our goal date is coming quickly! Our goal is to leave for our full time adventure the beginning of February :-)

      We found that when going through our stuff there were a LOT of things we hadn't used (clothes, dishes, etc) in years. Had one big garage sale and sent everything that didn't sell to goodwill. Just keep filtering down the "stuff". Anything we weren't sure about getting rid of we put in a 5x5 storage. Good luck and thanks for watching! 😊

    Genius idea! I have a question for a video im think about going RV full-time with a trailer using my 2500 GMC but I’m not sure I what length of trailer I should get. I heard if you go over 30 feet you have a hard time getting into national parks and state parks and also want to be doing some Boondocking probably most of the time. I deafly want the most space is possible but also not be limited where I want to go

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! 😎 While 30ft and below will definitely have almost 100% access everywhere, we've been in over 40 locations this year all over the East coast of the U.S. We've never had an issue finding a site. We've stayed in Campgrounds, RV Parks, State Parks, COE (Army Core Of Engineers) Sites, etc. We just plan ahead and make sure to call each site and confirm they are big rig friendly. We also use rvtripwizard.com, which has a lot of great tools to find locations. I think National Parks are a lot more size restricted, but there are always great campgrounds and RV parks outside the national parks. Thanks for watching! 😊

    This is a fantastic idea. We are starting the process. 😊👏🏼❤️ and the downsizing seems so overwhelming. What tips do you have on selling your "stuff"?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We started selling stuff early! As soon as we knew that we were moving forward with full-time RV living, we started selling the big stuff like the pool table, other game room stuff, extra TVs etc... And, since I have Lyme and have to do things in small, easy steps, I would go through one cabinet at a time. I would put aside the items I thought I wanted to keep and then moved everything else out to the garage to go in the "garage sale" pile. We also lined up friends who wanted to buy/take our bigger furniture and set up days (right before we moved out) for them to come and pick it up. We ended up having a huge garage sale and everything that was leftover from that sale got given away or donated to Goodwill. It was a daunting task and I had a hard time getting rid of so much stuff. However, I have not missed ONE thing that we got rid of and it's very liberating to downsize!

    • @cathleenjones5490
      @cathleenjones5490 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We started our downsizing when we moved from a 3bd/2.5ba condo into a 1bd/1ba apartment! We still have a few more years to reduce more (1.5 storage units & a garage) before the transition to full-time RVing. We will use your tape lines hint in our final months. Taking time to find family members to adopt family heirlooms is key as well as “not accumulating more stuff”! Thanks for sharing!

    I was wondering if you have a RV driving video for beginners. You did not just hop in your truck and hookup the trailer and head down the road. I am looking for how you handle such a large RV setup in busy hwy and city traffic and such. Thanks for sharing your tips.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You know... that's a great idea. I will be on the lookout for a large open parking lot or something to film this. My only "training" was from LazyDays in Tampa. We did an over night PDI of our home and in the morning they sent someone over to help us hitch up and check hitch height, bed clearance, etc. We had some adjustments and had to get rid of the toolbox because it sat too high (replaced with a low profile one). Then they allowed us to stay in the delivery lot as long as we wanted to drive the rig, practice backing up etc. I gave it a few tries to get the feel for maneuvering a fifth wheel, then we went on our way. I was very trepidatious for the first couple of months, but feel very comfortable now. So, aside from some brief instruction, I did just hitch up and hit the road... But, you're right... I looked all over for actual instructional videos on fivers. Couldn't find anything. I'll see if we can fix that, but it might be a few months to find a spot along our travels big enough, get permission, and film it.

    Hello from nebraska! Hubby and I are full timers, but we are in desperate need of a good reliable four season fifth wheel. The one we have is awful and we do not as of now go to warm weather in winter. Would you still recommend the grand design? This is what we are looking at, just so nervous. We also have a Chevy Silverado 2500 hd to pull what do you think on the grand design solitude 375res?
    Thank you so much
    Pam and Ray Lawson

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grand design's do have great insulation. Likely the best in the price range. I think maybe something like DRV Suites might have better insulation, but they are usually quite a bit higher in price. Like anything, the top end of the top end will have the best of everything (insulation , suspension, etc). We've had our rig in the single digit's and been comfortable. Make sure you get a heat pump as well as the furnace. On the 2500HD, what does your door sticker say is your cargo capacity and/or GVWR? A fiver rated at 16,800 will have around 3360 on the pin when fully loaded. That plus the both of you, and anything else you put in the truck (tools, etc) need to be under that number. A quick search on cargo capacity for the 2500HD shows 2,968 to 3,559 lbs. So, it will be close.
      Hope that helps! Have you seen our towing video? We cover weights and such there: th-cam.com/video/87runDszXLQ/w-d-xo.html Good luck! 😊

    My wife and I just started watching your videos. We have made the decision to become full time RVers as well! But it will be several years away still before that will become a reality. I have a couple questions for you. 1. One of your videos mentioned your pack up checklists. Did you say that you have those checklist templates available online for download? 2. How did you manage to buy your rig and truck while still living in your house? My wife and I are going to have to sell the house first before we can afford to purchase a trailer and truck. Not sure how the logistics of that is going to work.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Stewart! Welcome to our channel!
      Yes, we have the checklists here: changinglanesrv.com/pre-travel-rv-checklists/
      When you're ready to buy the RV, talk to the finance people at the dealership. They usually have good advice about that kind of thing. Typically it's best to get the Rv financing before selling the house (better on credit), so it's usually a matter of saving up for some overlap and timing the listing. We were lucky in that I had a friend who wanted to rent for a year then buy our house. Good Sam also has full-timer rv loans: www.goodsamrvloans.com/learn/rv-financing-faq/
      Good luck!!! 😊

      Can't find our original notes... but I do have a tape measure and live here now, so... the loft area / bunk that we call the "attic" is 96" wide (side to side of rig) x 32" deep (front to back of rig) x 22" high. Under bed (looking at the bed / facing driver side) is 45" wide x 49" deep x 12.5" high. Hope that helps! 📏👍🏽

      Don't have the exact measurements and its full, so can't get to the whole thing. But, on the passenger side (where it's the largest opening) it's 49" wide x 33" tall, and 47" deep till it starts to angle over. Hope that's enough to get you close...

    Great idea! Another thing I'm concerned about is weight - the bike weighs 510 pounds wet, for example. Did you guys keep track of weight as well?

      Yes... and we're maxed out! 😳 Luckily, with 3 axles, we're still way under on the 21K (3x7K) axles. The 2 axle toy haulers get much closer to maxing out the axles when at max GVWR.

    How long did it take for you to downsize? Great plan on measuring storage. I’d love a video about the biggest challenges/adjustments of living in a smaller place. We plan to go full time in a year. The only difference is we’ll park on our property during 4 day work week (we don’t have mobile jobs) and hope to travel on weekends until retirement. I’m concerned that not traveling full time will negate the benefits of going full time. Your thoughts?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We took our time and did it in a year, which was our goal. Certainly nothing wrong with weekending it and taking longer trips for vacations... I think there will still be the same benefits of being able to close up and move your whole house whenever you want, and you can still see things far away on vacation time... It will be good practice for when you are able to travel full time... 😊 . Thanks for watching, Mimi! Hope you check out the rest of our channel! 😊

    So you bought your Truck and RV before your home sold? What suggestions would you have if you'll purchase unit after selling home?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We were lucky in that a long time friend wanted to rent out home and buy it in a year (that's in the works now). From what we've been told (by man sources including the RV finance guy at lazydays), if you're financing your RV, it's best to do that purchase while you still own a home. An RV is a big "recreational" purchase in creditors eyes, and home ownership is a big plus for a recreational loan... Even though it might really be a "home" loan for a full time RVer. That said, it's all about timing... Our plan (before my friend wanted to rent), was to get an Realestate agent, get everything in place to list it (inspections, etc), buy the RV, then immediately list the house and cross our fingers that we didn't have to make too many mortgage payments. 😎

    • @williamthomas3263
      @williamthomas3263 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChangingLanes Thanks. Not to get too nosey, but your DTI was low enough to have all of those on at once? That would be my concern as I could support the debt of the rig credit wise without a mortgage payment. We thought that selling our home first then purchasing would show better, but that may not. Any thoughts?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely worth a chat with the finance guy at your dealer. Our finance guy at lazydays was amazing. Gave us some tips to improve our credit rating between the time we ordered and the time we closed the deal (when the rig was delivered). Saved us a ton of money in interest.
      One thing I've noticed in lenders... sometimes the most logical thing, like having the house sold and not having that payment, isn't what the computer spits out as "good". In this case, I think it has to do with the fact that the house has value like an investment, while the RV is considered sort of a luxury purchase. We'd definitely be strapped if we had all of the payments concurrently for more than a few months.
      You should definitely chat with a finance guy at your dealer.
