65 year old man here. You're so right, hard to find another man that reads. I just retired from a large workplace of mainly men. I think there were 3 guys counting me that read actual books. A good reason to come to TH-cam. Good luck with your channel.
I love that you say “that read actual books.” Ironic that the same platforms that are probably pulling people away from reading are the same places readers come to congregate. Thanks for watching!
Two theories about why you aren't utilizing your "designated" reading chair. 1) the lighting is poor in its present location 2) there isn't a handy spot to place your beverage. Add a lamp and "table" -- and for a minimalist the "table" could be simply a three-legged bar stool.
Bienvenue, welcome! I grew up in the 80’s in the the north east of Quebec . I never got bored reading Tintin, Lucky Luke, and Asterix. I still enjoy rereading them. I shared my love for Tintin with my children and my friends in the US.
Lucky Luke! I had forgotten about Lucky Luke. Of course that was also part of my early “formation.” Nice to meet someone who had a similar early reading experience.
I’m happy to have come across your channel. It’s great to have a variety of booktubers since I can’t really relate with what’s trending among the younger booktokers and booktubers.
I hear ya. The majority of Booktokers are about the age of my students. That said, they’ve introduced me to a ton of stuff I never would have looked at otherwise. Like you say, great to have a variety! Thanks for watching 🙂
Welcome to the BookTube community, from one newb to another! (I just started my channel this week.) It looks like you've been around a while and have the hang of this. I WISH I had the self-control to be a minimalist, but alas... Best of luck with your channel - I look forward to watching many more of your videos! 😎📚👍
Thanks for the kind words! I don't know about "having the hang of it," but at this point, I'm just having fun, which is the best advice I can give. I will check out your channel and welcome back at you!
I‘m super excited to watch more videos of yours 😍 I subscribed after watching your video about your 10 favorite books! Just loved it! And I like that you are open to different genres! I’m also an introvert pretending be an extrovert 😅 I can relate to a lot you are talking about in this video.
Thank you so much. I’m happy to have you along for the ride, and hopefully you continue to get something out of this channel. Thanks for watching and commenting and looking forward to chatting books with you in the future!
You brought up a great topic about about men and reading. I think this may only with certain cultures and types of men. My dad was a very practical man and not into reading for leisure because he had a hard life and made it by working (instead of reading only he had to and I read to him to him for that) My mother wasn’t much of a reader either aside from pulp romance. But, from my experience (I’m 61 years old) we can go beyond what we came from and find the joy and eduction and wisdom in reading. My husband loves to read and as a new grandmother with a grandson, I am so happy he loves books.
I’m sure culture plays a part as well as generation and economic circumstances. My father made his living working with his hands too, but I grew up watching him read. Only in his case it was always practical reading material learning some kind of new skill. Only in the last few years of his life did he seem to start reading for pleasure. In my own circle, I know only a couple of men who read fiction. Most either don’t read books at all or read exclusively nonfiction. Reading to my children is a habit that was important to me and I’m happy that my eldest now loves books (my youngest is still at the stage that the book is more useful as a chew toy). Thanks so much for watching and sharing!
Welcome to the community! I will enjoy hearing your opinions on a variety of books, which is a welcome thing to me. It appears you are a reader of literary fiction for the most part and I look forward to your recommendations and opinions. I have already jotted down some of the books in your top ten which I look forward to exploring.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Don’t be fooled by the top 10. While it seems to be dominated by literary fiction, that tends to make up about 1/4 of what I read. I read plenty of genre fiction and nonfiction as well. I guess the literary fiction just seems to bubble to the top!
Here are some guys who read and read widely. Brian @ Bookish, Mark @ Book time with Elvis, Dave @ Bookblather, Una & Krypto @ Codex Cantina, the Book Chemist, AJ Dunn reads & writes, Ben Reads Good, Art @ Bookshelf Odyssey, Read by Fred, Bart’s Book Space, Books with Bengis Khan, doomantidote , Philip Chase, Benjamin McEvoy, Aaron Facer, …
Thank you so much and thank you for sharing that list. I love that I’ve been actively seeking out bookish content on TH-cam for over a year and yet I only know of a few of those channels! Thanks so much for expanding my subscription list. 😀
I’m glad I found your channel! I just joined the BookTube community. C’est intéressant que nous ne soyons pas de la même génération, mais j’ai lu Tintin aussi. 😊
Welcome to Booktube! I'm now subscribed to your channel. As for Tintin, two things: 1) Tintin transcends generations! I'm looking forward to getting my son his first Tintin book (I think he still needs a couple of years). 2) I don't think I'm as old as you think I am :P
I've watched 3/4 of your videos and have a feeling you'll have 10k subscribers in the not-too-distant future. Btw the thumbnails have been great so far
Hello. Nice to meet you. I normally read history and there aren't a lot of booktubers who read history. There especially aren't a lot of women booktubers who read history. I've been thinking about starting a channel just to have another woman who reads history on TH-cam.
Thanks so much for watching! I don’t know that many history book tubers, but it’s true that all the history podcasts I listen to are by men. Funny how certain genres tend to split down gender lines. If you do decide to start a channel, let me know and I can guarantee you at least one subscriber ☺️
@@melissamybubbles6139 my suggestion? Just start with whatever you’ve got. My first several videos (including this one and my top 10 video which has north of 85k views at this point) are recorded on a 4 year old iPhone with no external mic and edited on iMovie. Once you get rolling, you can always upgrade your gear later! Look forward to seeing what you put out!
I think social media algorithms are a big part of maintaining the stereotypes about who reads and what they read. I still wonder though why the majority of readers who participate in readathons are women, as well as the majority of participants in active non-scifi bookish groups on Goodreads. I had to pointedly go looking for booktubers who are not women because otherwise all youtube was showing me was booktube channels by White women.
In part, I think that’s true. That said, it is also a reality that white women do constitue the largest demographic of fiction readers in the West (basing this on conversations I’ve had with friends in the publishing industry who have access to this kind of data). But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for other groups to find their niche as well. For example, I was kind of surprised to learn that the two biggest demographics of people who subscribe to my channel are men over 65 and men under 25. So, while the algorithms may be part of the problem, they can also help find those “niche” communities (the irony of a middle aged white dude talking about niche communities is not lost on me). Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙏

Checking it out!

Welcome, as a 50 year old dude that reads a ton with zero friends who do I look forward to following your channel. Cheers
You've found a kindred spirit, then! Glad to have you along for the ride.

Close enough. 😉 I’m a born and raised Montrealer of immigrant parents. Thanks for the kind words and I hope you enjoy future videos!
Just found your channel. good to get more male book readers here.
We exist! I swear... thanks for watching :)
Hello. We need to read more. I've recently been reading essayist Joan Didion's work. Sadly, she recently passed away. Good luck on your channel 😊
Didion’s work is incredible and I’ve never even read her books, just essays and articles. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Welcome to Booktube! I'm a romance writer and I've been on TH-cam for over a year now. Subscribed.x
Thanks so much, Emma! I’ll check out your channel. Maybe you’ll be the one to finally turn me into a romance reader!

Tintin, Asterix...Stories, where would we be without them?
I don’t know, but I definitely don’t think I would have developed a lifelong reading habit without them!
