I'm 56 and this is the music I grew up on, I truly appreciate your show and I can't say enough how much I get a kick out of the young generation today hearing for the time what it is that old guys are talking about when we reminisce about the music. It's seems to me that the music of my time had more feeling more soal and more identity than the music of today. Who knows maybe it's just me.
It's rather pleasing that you began getting familiar with Neil, his works,... and his magical drum kit, prior to his passing (rather than after). I'd also think he sensed the complementary nature in your reactions/reviews.
So awesome that you discovered the gift of Rush! Welcome to the world of Rush. Your life and what you perceive about it is going to change forever. IN A VERY GOOD WAY! Thanks for the kind words to one of my hero’s.
Wonderful reaction~! So many suggestions to view and react to shows what an impact Neil made. Everyone, from those playing air drums or those who have the kit can all agree that he truly was that pulse to the soundtrack of songs many have in our minds. I believe "Fly By Night" is very suiting. There is an "official" video here. Keep up the great reactions. New subscriber here. :)
You are spot on about the lyrics. I remember seeing them do this whole album live before in was released and was blown away. Thanks for the love. RIP Professor.
Hey Scribe! Those are called wood blocks I think. If you want a serious dose of THE MAGICAL DRUM SET, have you seen the Neil solo Frankfurt? 2004 I think. You WILL BE floored. Saw him do that live several times. What a blessing. Peace, Phil
You're correct, Scribe. The Trees exemplifies that we all have different natural attributes and "inequality" in certain respects, doesn't mean "inferiority." Communism is a perfect example; all are equally miserable and poor under control of a government. "....for they passed a noble law and the trees are ALL kept equal by hatchet, axe and saw." Neil was a master lyricist/story-teller. RIP, Neil.
Happy Monday beautiful goddess! Another great reaction to one of my favorite bands with one of the GOATs of drumming. Not only I'm glad to be an universal black rock musician but also love your inspiration, your beauty and letting me know that I can keep my dream going at age 37 (going on 38 in October). It's too bad you never got the chance to see them live. I saw them live twice, and they more than lived up to their reputation. They just kept doing one amazing thing after another. And there was a vibe about them that made you feel like you were tuned in to another world, another level of existence where everything was more real than real, and you had access to all kinds of subtle truths. Very few musicians can make that happen. Rush did it consistently for 40 years. I'm glad you found them, and the others your do reactions to. I'm glad you have the ears and the heart to hear this.
RIP what a gigantic hole in the world of music. He was the best but did not hold it over anyone. Humble and helped many others. I saw them perform THE TREES live & it was awesome. A friend was lucky enough to get a set of drumsticks from Neil. I tried to steal them, but alas I failed 😢 This is such an awesome song that is not reacted to much. It is my favorite Rush song, so thank you.
Scribe, you are the best! Love watching you react to Rush. I have heard every song in their catalogue hundreds of times some songs thousands of times and I still laugh in amazement at what Neil, Geddy, and Alex were able to do. Great song and I look forward to air drumming with you in the next Rush reaction... Maybe Jacob's Ladder?
. if you choose not too decide you still have made a choice. I Will never forget you Neil. thank you miss for doing this, it gives you wider ranging atmospheres to see them cities of light when you open your eyes on the passage to Bangkok, enjoy.
My simplified interpretation of "Trees": The 'oaks' are the USA and the 'maples' are Canada - national flag emblem is a red maple leaf. Instrumental (partial) interpretation: Neil's rapid-fire striking of the wooden blocks is probably representing a woodpecker because based on my experience with woodpeckers, they love to rapidly peck for insects inside telephone poles - which are formed from maple trees.
Well, it's about oppression, yes, but there is a warning at the end! That to achieve equality, even with all the mechanisms of civil society (like unions and laws) there is often an accompanying element of violence. Peart's lyrics are the deepest, and they rock.
no you don't need to say more... however what you do need to do, right now, is to do "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left 1981. That's the reaction I want to see from you as you're really starting to pick up on all the subtleties that he's injecting into the song … His drumming on this will blow your mind.
Exactly. The version done around same time live is best. I saw Rush in 76 77 78 etc live. The versions from this period way better. More accurate with the full solos and opening. If you seen them live doing this in 77 like I did and then 80's 90's 2000's you know the difference.

What’s great about this song is it can be interpreted multiple ways. The way Neil created it was he found the idea of trees acting human as Humorous. He was reading a comic in the newspaper IIRC. Also, check out Xanadu on ESL (Exit Stage Left.) it’s an amazing performance. Red barchetta was also great.
