When Miyagi's wife died during childbirth, there was no doctor available due to limited resources at the internment camp. Back during WW2, a whole bunch of Japanese Americans were confined to what were essentially prison camps due to potential loyalties to their motherland. Despite that, many like Miyagi signed up to fight against the Germans. A disproportionate number of them got Medals of Honor. (a real life recipient who became a US Senator made a cameo appearance in the Next Karate Kid movie)

YES!!! So glad that you're watching the "Karate Kid" trilogy before continuing with "Cobra Kai". They are a definite must to understand the storyline, and to understand where the revelry between Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso started. You can go ahead and continue on with "Cobra Kai" up until the end of season 2. After the season 2 finale "The Karate Kid Parts 2 and 3" movies are a must-watch. RIP always to Pat Morita(Mr. Miyagi)!!! I grew up with this movie in the 80s. It's always been a favorite. And it's one of my favorite movie soundtracks. Fun Fact: Ralph Macchio(Daniel) got to keep the yellow car from this movie. And he still has it. Up next is "The Karate Kid Part 2". Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
I’m not saying you’re wrong, because you’re not, but my mom watched Cobra Kai without watching the other movies and the only questions I can remember having to explain is who Chozen is, who Terry is, and who Mike was. Other than that, it’s a pretty easy to understand little story.

I've been watching a lot of first time watches of this movie lately. And I notice a lot of people getting a little confused about Mayagis wife and child. He was a soldier for the United States Army, during world War 2. And as his reward for fighting aligning himself with the US to become an honored citizen and try to start a life in the land of the free home of brave. His wife and child died in an American made Japeanese internment camp. Mans been through some shit. Sorry if that felt like a rant. I just think you really can't completely see Mr. Mayagis character without getting that point. Never the less you picked a great time to get into the franchise. "What does the red and the white mean" The red and white flags are meant to differentiate the fighters. If you notice, one of them is wearing a red sash tied to his belt. The red flag represents that fighter. The white flag represents the fighter without the red sash. This way the referees can call out something they see to the main ref. The color of the flag indicates which fighter they're "talking" about, and the actual movement of the flag indicates what it is they want to say (up, down, side, crossed, etc. have different meanings). On the tournaments I participated there is no red sash, but there is also no grading belt. Every participant wears either a white belt or a red belt (the fight controller indicates which one before the fight) and then the flags are quite easy to understand even for those who don't understand the rules. It differs from federation to federation though.
The fight tournament at the end was an actual tournament and they filmed the scenes there. The referee in the final fight trained the cast in basic maneuvers. The cast all felt like complete imposters because everyone else there was actually trained properly and there to compete.
KK2 & KK3 should be viewed prior to Season 2 or 3. 🥋 Cobra Kai newbies can watch Season 1 w/out seeing the sequels but they add greater context, especially in Episode 7 (@ the committee meeting).
Thank you for watching The Karate Kid. You are going to enjoy Cobra Kai a lot more now. Just wanted to ask that you make sure to watch The Karate Kid Part 2 before watching Cobra Kai Season 3 and The Karate Kid Part 3 before watching Cobra Kai Season 4.
Karate Kid 4 is actually titled the Next Karate Kid. You need to watch that to understand Cobra Kai season 6. There is an obscure reference to Mr. Miyagi’s first name that comes from The Next Karate Kid. Very likely, season 6 will be based on The Next Karate Kid.

I think you can watch season 1-3 now if you want. Because you won’t need the backstories of characters in karate kid 2-3 because they come later in the show. But you might as well just watch 2 and 3 now to finish that before cobra kai

This comment is speculative and i welcome any other Karate practitioners or judges to challenge it. This judgment could be different from dojo to dojo. Judges are trying to strike a balance between competition, making the fight realistic and fighter safety. Where I train and spar we emphasize control. I'm allowed to kick or punch you in the face or head but I am expected to do so with control. If my punch drops you, I can usually look forward to a penalty, or a disqualification. In the ending sequence it's Johnny who initiates contact with his punch to Daniel's face and the judge could have called it an uncontrolled and dangerous punch. He doesn't earn a point but could easily have been disqualified. I think the final kick would range from acceptable to illegal depending upon where you are. On one side of the argument, the kick snaps Johnny's head back, clearly hitting him hard enough and without enough control. Some judges might penalize or disqualify Daniel for that Crane kick. On the other hand, Johnny races into the kick. It's asking a lot to expect Daniel to both control his kick and adjust its power down for a competitor who charges into him. I regularly tell kids who we tell not to make a lot of contact, that their kicks need to snap for some power anyways. An opponent needs to understand that they cannot simply assume your kicks will never be dangerous allowing them to just come in close and hammer you. If you throw a great kick and an opponent charges into it, that's their problem.
We not gonna talk about the other karate kid where he talked to a girl and got bullied and landed a hit on the bully then got ko and his friend left him and Daniel he talked to girl and got bullied and he landed a hit to and then got ko and his friend left him
So it's called a clash when not enough refs see the hit or if both opponents look like they hit at the same time. That's why that punch Johnny threw didn't count. As for the tapping on the leg. It could be a signal for the movie choreography. But I've punched my leg, arm, or side to kill pain from being hit. If you get hit hard and your leg tenses up. Hit it again to snap it out of it. Works for me
If you’re going to wait to watch cobra Kai I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you watch all 3 karate kid movies asap. There’s so many references to the movies and it would be a shame for you to miss out on so many of them.
@@sarahlawson2541 no, the next karate kid isn’t going to be relevant to cobra Kai. Just watch all THREE Karate Kid movies. Then you're covered. You'll get the references to them more and it'll be more enjoyable.
Works for me
definitely watch the Karate Kid movies first before watching Cobra Kai! everything really won’t make sense if you don’t…
When Daniel’s friends bail on him. I love how it’s universal with newer and older fans that they are scumbags
You are 100% right, Daniel's last point was bs. Johnny got screwed. Hope he doesn't start drinking in the future because of it.
I would watch all karate kids before cobra Kai but you can start watching now if you want to
Daniel was like in his 20s in this movie and in cobra kai he is in 60s in the he was just acting as a teen
Belive he was 22 years old
Couches always value there star players if there in the wrong or not
58:00 I have the same question 😂
If you’re going to wait to watch cobra Kai I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you watch all 3 karate kid movies asap. There’s so many references to the movies and it would be a shame for you to miss out on so many of them.

@@sarahlawson2541 no, the next karate kid isn’t going to be relevant to cobra Kai. They already stated in an interview that they won’t be using content from NKK, and that the new movie coming out won’t affect the outcome of season 6. If he decides to watch the new karate kid movie in the works set to release after cobra Kai and they announce it’ll deal with “The next karate kid” nonsense then he can watch it. For now he needs to focus on the original trilogy and the cobra Kai series’s.
