Mounting hgr25 linear rails for my 6040 cnc router y axis

  • Hello I decided to push through and make the final upgrades for my cnc router. I would like to use it to machine a part for mounting a quick change tool post for my emcoturn and later a turret.
in this video I make a linear rail slide upgrade for my y axis. exchanging the old supported rods against hgr25 rail and hgh25 rail blocks.
First try to square two long aluminium pieces to which I mount the rails. It was alot of job since the aluminium were 700 mm and I Only got ~200mm of travel on my minimill.
I then drilled and tapped mounted and aligned the rails.
Hopefully I can have booth the router and lathe running next week.

Seen a lot of these pop up since my router build. 25’s are a bit overkill but they do fit easy. The bigger issue is machining a base block long enough to support the length at a precision level that has rail stops built in to prevent shifting. We have a 4020 milling machine so it wasn’t difficult. My base is 42” long and within .0002 accuracy. You can use your pinky to slide the axis back and forth. I suspect you’re accuracy is at maximum. The problem you get is sagging end to end with the table and indifference once you shift he work piece. It cannot be avoided and sure you can optimize it but your not getting tenth accuracy no matter how hard you try. Built enough machines to know what involved in accuracy besides it’s as accurate as the machine your making it with. Our most accurate machine at work is no better than .0001 and that’s given you don’t have any tooling runout. Fun stuff. So Getting precision squaring on a bench mill or knee mill is difficult and likely not even probable. Far as the 6040 tables go they are crap and milling a solid bed can’t be done for the average person. My router bed is a solid 1.25” thick and it has 500 or so holes alternating between m6 threaded and 5mm pins for edge stops. Threw the steppers in the trash and installed JMC ac inverter servos. I had difficulty cutting faster than 200ipm with a .02doc and then I took the gantry apart and it’s now built with linear rails. Raised the gantry a few inches and it basically works like our high speed vmc with less Z axis. There is still deflection if you try and cut too deep but taking .04-.05 depth cuts isn’t an issue. Beyond that I wouldn’t bother you’ll just break end mills at high speeds anyways. This one can cut just over 300ipm feeds and rapid twice that. If we had chosen a steel or EG gantry instead I may have considered larger servos yet to increase doc and rapid speed. The next project were probably going to cast.

Is that the green BT spindle you mounted a while back? I'm busy with a similar project, just building a complete machine, not doing some mods. I know the frustration if you don't have enough movement and you have to move the job. That's why I'm building this CNC milling machine with travels of 1500, 550 & 500 mm. I will also get rid of those flimsy T-slot sections. You surely got some nice equipment brother. Have a beer day.

I work, assembled machines with the same structure, only they have, a tank between the rails. My problem has been aligning the rails on each side, to ensure parallelism and squareness. The rails are located at a distance of 3 meters from each other. Do you know any technical and effective alignment system. Well, I do it empirically with a tensioned steel wire.

LoL, it wont be to much left of the original 6040. I Think I Will machine the missing parts and put together the 6040 and sell it. Hopefully I can get some bucks for it.

@@thechipwelder1253 good idea to sell it or you can use it as a laser marking or engraver machine in the future

Usually the working area. 60cm by 40cm in this case. Atleast that's hot it is with the cheaper Chinese routers
