This was, by far, my favorite game in the four years of college. Fourth row MUSS. I was one of the many idiots who rushed early and got stuck in the sidelines. Such a crazy game.
I'm not a fan of Utah but the holy war is a badass name for a rivalry

It's an unsportsmanlike penalty for interference. Same applies to mascots, coaches, and players on the sidelines.

@sky7x269 saw it once happen twice, for the UofA wildcats. Actually cost them 1 game and they ended up losing. It's a rule and therefore a penalty. Fans are dumb and Utah fans especially so, twice this night. Got fortunate.

Actually they're right. Any case of people who are subject to the rules of the game entering the field when they cannot do so is a dead ball foul, not a live ball foul. The officials blundered.

There was penalty for the fans, but look at the BYU bench on that big pass on the final drive. There were many players and coaches on the field. Deserved a flag.

I love all these comments blaming the fans. Yes, I’m a Utah fan. I get it. We screwed up. And IF we lost, than y’all can blame us all y’all want. However, BYU had not 1, not 2, but three chances to tie the game, and failed each and every single time, so I’d love to know how, exactly, this is the fans fault? Shouldn’t we stop blaming Utah fans and maybe blame the kicker, who missed ALL THREE TRIES TO TIE THE GAME.

This is right up there with "The Play" in the 1982 Big Game between Cal and Stanford.
BYU fans always digging deep deep deep into their history to pull out success. 1989 70-31 win and the never ending 1984 championship which happened before the BCS decided to make it nearly impossible for a team like BYU or Utah to make it in. Since then BYU has yet to get back in and Utah has.

A change of possession didn't take place during the play, so it doesn't matter what down it was; the only reason the game would be extended would be due to a Utah penalty, which is exactly what happened. (And the play-by-play guy keeps saying, "Yeah, great point." 🙄)
I remember this game. And what I remember most is the BYU fans doing what they do best. They whined, cried, blame the refs, claimed they actually won the game, then cried that Utah sucks and shouldn’t even be in the PAC 12. Yet, the refs handed BYU not 1, not 2, but 3 chances to tie this game. THREE. And they choked each and every time. So you tell me how in the hell did the refs impact BYU’s kicker?
Get a clue. BYU fans were not claiming they won the game. Give me a break. Give us ALL a break....

Swimcrafters Imagine if the game went to overtime, they chose that side of the field to play on with the fan still on that side line, and let’s say a running back or wide receiver had a play on that side line and was forced out of bounds into the fans.

Don't for get BYU players and coaches, including Bronco out on the field on the 45 yard line. Should have been offsetting penalties on both benches. Bronco was the closest person from either bench to the play.
It's one of the biggest rivalry games in the country, doesn't matter what either team is ranked when they play.

I was at that game, I was 11 and my brother was 15 and we wanted to rush the field and our dad made us leave early

i am a male cheerleader for the University of Utah and i would almost have to give some of the credit to the fans for the win because there were several time throughout the game that there were offsides calls made against BYU because the crowd was SO loud they couldn't hear anything...... but honestly both BYU and Utah have been major schools in Utah so it's hard for the smaller schools to get respect in the state. I actually go to a university that doesn't have a football team but doesn't mean they can't perform well. Look at Gonzaga they don't have a football team and their basketball program is unstoppable every other year. I go to a school up the street from BYU so pretty much BYU has lots of followers.
And since you've been alive, BYU has won more.
Utah is playing 9 teams that were ranked last year, BYU is playing 5 ranked teams from last year. BYU plays 5 mid major teams a 1 fcs team, Utah plays 1 fcs team and 2 mid major team if u wont to count byu as a mid major still. 3 Of the teams Utah plays have been top 5 teams the last 3,4, 5 years Utah has a harder schedule then byu again. They droped the wac teams but just put in Mid Tennessee,Idaho State, and a C_USA team and 3 MW teams. There 2008, 2009, and 2010 Schedule was better then 2013

Fans almost blew it? Cool story, Y fans. Seeing as your head coach a number of his staff and some of your players also cane in the field during live play. But it's no surprise, you had excuses when you got smoked 54-10 in '11 and you'll have excuses for the next year's loss too.
It would be the first time fans actually made an impact in a game.

What a wild game this one was. You know, sometimes in life it just seems that certain things just aren't meant to happen. This is one of those times, in that the Coug's were provided every chance to win this, however it for some unknown reason, that only the college football Gods know, we weren't meant to win on this day in time. MH
On one hand it was kind of embarrassing that the officials had to explain to the fans that the game isn't over and then penalize the team just for what they did. On the other hand, it was equally puzzling for the officials to call it. I understand officials are supposed to be true to the rule book but man just let the damn game end. Seriously.

Well, you can't rush the field but my point is that the fans are not expected to know the rules of the game. The penalty was called against the fans. If that's how it's going to be, then I think there should be some kind of rules conference. Because with this being the case, a fan could dress up like a fan from the other team and then run on the field for that reason.
Another thing, (I actually did research on this), if you penalize somebody for rushing the field while the play is in progress, it's called sideline interference and it's only a 15 yard penalty on the fourth offense, and by rule it has to be called a dead ball foul (as opposed to the live ball foul ruling by the officials). Since this was fourth down, a dead ball foul would give Utah the ball.
@@GoUtes92 I know this is years later, but I was remembering this game when this video popped up in my feed. The thing that confuses me here in the comments is that everybody seems to think that this was fourth down, commentators included. I had to go back and count multiple times to make sure I didn't put my foot in my mouth and I evened went to the ESPN full play-by-play. Third down, not fourth. I know it's hard for some people to count to four, especially with all the other chaos happening.

Who ever the clock operator in this game was bad. Not only for the four seconds that ran off for no reason but the clock was running before the snap after the spike.

Umm if you know anything you would understand that it was considered impossible at the time BYU did it. And only one other team not currently a BCS AQ has ever done it, In 1945. I think Utah fans are still just upset that for all their bluster they have nothing to show. Their one hope for any glory is a BYU alumni who sadly is looking at another losing season, and an impending need to refresh his resume. It is just another sad case of pearls before swine.

not the best example of aptitude... And potentially an example of intervention... If the field goal had been good from the 24 yard line (for the inept the distance the kick actually would have been from the 19) the game would have gone past midnight and meant Sunday play... so of all the losses to Utah this is probably the one to be least upset about... Cuz it would have been a forfeit loss as we will NEVER play on Sunday... As it is a 24 hour period! :)

Crushed? Utah was in every game but the Arizona State game, When they played USC, UCLA,Oregon State, Washington,and Arizona( all better teams then byu) they had a chance to win in the 4th. Utah should win 7-9 games this year and should win there first 6 or 7 games. From OCT 19 - NOV 23 will make there season they need to go at least 2-3.
well let me just tell you that Field rush # 3 will be coming just like they beat you guys in 2010 and they beat the Utes in 2012 it will happen again vs BYU. trust me it will happen.
