Love sonny in the piano-less trio, and Wilbur Ware is great on that album. If you like that stuff, you should check out Sonny's bootleg live albums from Euro tour a year or two later with Henry Grimes on bass, Sonnymoon for Two and St. Thomas. So good.
Ditto on Himes! His work divides in half. First, realistic - naturalistic portrayals of Black life in America. If He Hollers, Let Him Go is the best place to start. Then he switched to Harlem police procedurals. They are a phantasmagorical series of crime novels, The Heat's On being one.
Oh, I cannot wait to talk with you about Himes. I love him, can't get enough of him.

I will certainly have to check that out. Thank you for this rec
St. Thomas is such a favorite. I enjoy how he introduces Sonnymoon for Two on the CD featured in this video.

I will look out for If He Hollers, Let Him Go. Thank you for this brief synopsis of Himes' styles.
