    Got started with Leica on a used M262 and a 50mm Summarit. Everyone told me that the Summarit is not the „real deal“ and I need to get a Summicron at least. So I got my hands on a used Summicron and had a chance to shoot both lenses intensively side by side for comparison. To my eyes there are only very very subtle differences, the Summarit even sharper wide open. No wonder as the lens construction is identical except for a difference in aperture and barrel construction. In terms of colours, sharpness, look there is no difference to the Summicron.
    Today prices for Leica gear is skyrocketing, Summicron 50 prices have basically doubled in Europe. If you are on a budget and you want a Leica sticker on your lens the Summarit is a lens I can highly recommend. Its the unloved child for no reason especially when buying used. Less weight and the focus tab come on top as a bonus.

      Definitely a shame to see them snubbed. I really enjoyed using it. I wonder if a very famous photographer had sworn by them, if they would have had the same fate.

    I very much enjoy using the Summarit 50/2.4 on my MP. Nice to see someone else giving it some love.

      It’s a really great lens! I couldn’t find much info about it on TH-cam and I saw a lot of talk of it being sub-par from many Leica fans, unfortunately.

    This little lens was a lot of fun to travel with. It turned out to be a great focal length for a quieter town in Florida. How do y'all like this video format compared to the Street Notes POV stuff?

    I love my older 50mm 2.5 Summarit. It’s even smaller than the later 2.4 version you had here.

      @@TheLiamGordon they aren’t priced too badly on eBay as of late. The 35mm 2.5 Summarit however is priced too close to Summicron. I don’t think people are even selling it at these prices. I’ve seen 35mm 2.5 Summarits listed for $2K. Nonsense.

    @rudyortega3285 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awww, Turbo. Such a cute troublemaker. I agree about the lens not being attractive to many people. I think a big reason why people would get a Summarit lens is they like the build quality of Leica but can't afford a Summicron or Summilux. Optically, you could get a Voigtlander and it would have the same image quality output.

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s it, and apparently the Zeiss Planar is better optically.

    • @oreziopancrazio3685
      @oreziopancrazio3685 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my case, I could afford a Summilux, but I dont like the shape, the weight, the extra over care I have to put in it. Being travel photography my main area, travelling with a 3000+ euro lens it doesnt rrally make sense. And I am speaking about go and travel for months, not being a weekend in some european capital. Bring such a delicate lens in humid troppiacal jungles doesnt make any sense. Summicron its a lens from the 70’s. Now, with all the due respect, its a beautiful lens but still has 50+ years on the shoulders, and u can see it in the pictures thst gives, a lot of this classic vintage aura that I do personally not like. This leave us with thd last option, a summarit, which has been designed with modern era computer, with modern coating, with modern linesand material, for a digital sensor, which render beautifully gorgeous on contemporaneous Leicas. Add on top of this that people do not want this lineup of lenses so prices are really interesting, and you have the formula for a fantastic lens in every sense. I own the 35mm and its a superior lens in every aspect

  • @vickey59
    @vickey59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good reflection on the lens and why it didn’t succeed. Totally agree for 50mm, a used Summicron was a better choice, and a Zeiss will be as good with plenty of change left. Same with 35mm.
    But the 75 and 90 Summarits made much more sense since there weren’t as many cheap alternatives in these focal lengths at their quality and speed. They were cheaper entry points for people who are used to more normal focal lengths to learn shooting at 75/90 lenses.

    Ayant la trilogie des Summarit en version 2,4, n'en déplaise à certains, ils ne sont pas les versions "cheap" de Leica, leur qualité mécanique est parfaite, le maniement souple et mieux conçu que les Summicron, les 35 et le 50 sont dotés d'un pare-soleil intelligent et compact, contrairement aux anciennes versions, ils ont été conçus pour le numérique donc adaptés au capteurs, l'effet 3d est plus perceptible par rapport aux Summicron antérieurs, la définition elle est très pointue et dès la pleine ouverture, ce qui n'exclu pas pour l'ambiance et la nostalgie d'avoir un Summicron 50 version 3 ou 4 dans son sac, hélas chers d'occasion et difficile à trouver en état parfait.
    Coté télé, choisir le 75mm plus adapté au viseur que le 90mm.
    Dommage que Leica est arrêté leur fabrication, sur des avis, manquant d'"objectivité".

      @@TheLiamGordon Yes better that Sony, it has thinner glass in front of the sensor. BSI sensor should perform better and avoid the purple vignette. I picked a Z7 because I found a deal and because it does not have AA filter ( Z6 does ). AF is not as good as R6 but I don't really shoot fast moving subjects.
