  • Smack dab in the middle of Hot Wheels' 50th Birthday last week, acclaimed Designer Jun Imai announced he was leaving Mattel for another opportunity. While the brand is still in great hands, Jun's influence the last few years is undeniable. Here is a look at some of the models he is most known for creating, JDM.
    Part 2 comes later this week.

    My favorite designer....he brought JNC into the mix and inspired liveries for JDM Legends cars...I remember how I found my Mazda RX7 SCAA, white 71 Nissan Skyline with the green racing decals, and the yellow Datsun 510 Wagon...at Giant or Safeway on the pegs....you always come with the great info and the killer cars!

    I want to write this before you do the euro video tomorrow because I think his influence is extremely important for us as car enthusiasts coming back to hotwheels having given up on the brand. I think you, Hot wheels, and dealers/collectors are confused at how these cars could have hung for so long back then but are so popular now. The answer is simple: The toy enthusiasts and car enthusiasts aren't the same crowd. We car enthusiasts gave up on Hot Wheels doing Euro, JDM, hot hatch domestics up until the recent few years. Every one of us had hotwheels as kids but as we grew into our specific tastes (VW/Audi for me) hotwheels had little to nothing to offer but old chargers and camaros. Jun's designs almost single handedly brought me back to collecting and customizing. Merc 190, M1, Alfas, old Veedubs, 2002, CSL... Drifters are collecting the 180sx, or gt86. Sports car enthusiasts want touring cars, rally enthusiasts want subarus, I am in Colorado Springs for work this week and found three R8s at Target, got all of them, if they don't fit in my luggage I'll leave socks behind... even if he didn't make the exact castings I mentioned here, he made something that influenced the car enthusiasts. Jun brought us back.

    When are you releasing the second part of Jun's influence? It would be really appreciated to know about his influence in non-JDM cars.
    Thanks

    I'm amazed that we haven't gotten either version of the Mazda RX-7 in Car Culture yet.
    Not that I dislike the RX-3 but it's already appeared in Car Culture 3 times, one more time than even the fricking 510 Bluebird.

    • @SteveBrandon
      @SteveBrandon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed but at least the S2000 was both a Super Treasure Hunt and a Cool Classics, so that's like half a premium release each (one had Real Riders but a plastic chassis, the other had a metal chassis but plastic wheels albeit really nice ones).

    Will hot wheels continue to make more variations of some of these cars (510 ; 620) after he leaves?? Or will they discontinue and stop making them all together?? Thanks

    The celica really resemble camaro so much that at first glance i thought it was another camaro casting back in 2013

    • @longtailgt
      @longtailgt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I remember seeing the prototype photos and I though it was a new version of the COPO Camaro. It took me a few more looks to realize it was a '70 Celica.

    Jun Emai made a lot cool HW castings. Huge respect for the guy. It's amazing to think in 2018 that castings like Datsun 510 were peg warmers a few years ago! And look where we are now! So many great castings. He will deifinitely be missed, so i hope Hot Wheels finds a guy that talented in the future. Bring on Part 2!

    His cars are definitely some of my favs. Growing up a JDM fan even when I was a kid, it's impossible not to like most of these. That K-day RX-7 is gorgeous I agree, I have my only example in a protector.

    the AE86 has sorta always been well known, it's just a case of boomer hw collectors being boomers. Japanese cars were popular in the US in the 80s and 90s. Even in the 70s the Zs and Celicas were popular stateside. It was never fad, it just took HW collectors half a century.
