      Why should someone engage in such pettiness when there is actually good cheese to enjoy?
      And of course also the British have their high quality products. Cheddar has a nice prickling effect, that is quite unique.
      When it comes to blue cheese, I prefer the french style, but... let's not argue about taste. Well made cheese is just delicious.

      The whole geographical indication thing matters a lot to people who feel connected to the product, which is a lot of Europeans (including Brits). Americans on the other hand just define cheese types by some quantifiable numbers, because they don't need to care about far-away people getting angry mostly.

    • @trapezius77
      @trapezius77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@a2e5 I understand, but geographical indication for protected foods is always given by city/province/region name, and does not indicate if the product is made above ground or underground. Check what I said: I wonder if there will be a difference in taste if it is made above ground in the exact same location.

      Well, I'm not french, but I think they hated it. It just happens that export quality has been improving a lot. Cheddar hasn't yet found a niche in our market, but stilton is slowly getting there. I reckon that the French being closer started before than us.

    • @JacksonNomad
      @JacksonNomad ปีที่แล้ว

      In the past a lot of the "Cheddar" we exported was truly bland, mass produced, low quality crap, which tainted the image of English cheese in the eyes of foreigners. That's changing now that more quality types of Cheddar are being exported.

    When I was a kid, it was common for farms to sell their own unpasteurised milk and cheeses and the quality was top-notch.
    EU regulations and supermarkets killed almost the entire industry.
    There are still quality British cheeses to be found, but they will cost you an arm and a leg.
    Hopefully, there will be a little managed deregulation now that we have left the EU and high quality, reasonably priced farm cheeses can become a thing again.
