It would mean the world to me if you leave a like 👍🏻 and drop a comment to support the channel. Also here is the e collar I was using guys www.dogtra.com/products/e-collars/280c
Hi Upstate Canine Academy. I have a 20 month old Staffy x bully mix. We adopted him from SPCA 4 Months ago. He is eager to please and has picked up new commands well. He does however have a strong play and prey drive which affects his recall. Is low level stimulation going to be sufficient once he has already engaged in play or prey. We will normally try to recall before he starts to engage. We have used long line and high value treats. This has improved recall a lot but he is certainly not reliable. If off leash he will run from dog to dog, or person to person until he finds the interaction he wants, normally he loves to get dogs to chase him. If we look for a local trainer to help with an e collar, what qualities and methods should we be looking at from them to know that they are interested in the dogs best interests. I have spoken to one trainer and the e collar was her go to for everything from, interest in cats, to digging in the garden. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tom, I have learned so much about dog behavior, tool usage and love your videos! As a subscriber and a nurse who wears a mask all day everyday, I have a viewer tip to help you. I have noticed you constantly have to pull up your 'no bad dog' face mask to cover your nose. Try changing the tension around your ear - pull down on the mask from behind your ears to tighten the tension around your nose and it will stay up longer. Hope this helps just a smidgen as much as you have helped all your viewers.
The e-collar has legitimately saved my dog's life! We were out playing and whenever he went to retrieve his ball he got interested in some cars in the parking lot, after giving him stimulation and telling him to come he recalled to me instead of going into the busy parking lot. All of his remote training was done in accordance with the videos that Tom has posted using a dogtra ARC
Seems like Tom is teaching them to all speak the same language so, it is not just assumed communication was understood when it really was not (can get mixed signals which confuses both the dog and the human, but for different reasons, but neither understands....). Both verbal and non verbal are at play.... Once the basics are there, it seems like they can then can work on more "words in the dictionary" so to speak? Tom has an intuitive instinct in figuring out what happened and why. He also seems to know what/how to fix both owners and their dogs, and get them in synch. It is great when people are willing to ask for help, knowing it will benefit everyone. Lovely Golden! So happy go lucky ❤
Dude THANK YOU!! First time using E-Collar this evening...My 9 month PitCorso knows sit, lay, paw and crate but outside off leash she's like a wild dog and within 10 mins after watching your video she responded to every come!! Never has she done that!
The e-collar is an absolute life saver! And these videos where great for teaching us how to use it properly. We now have a 99% reliable recall with our doodle. Thank you!
Hi, I have a male dachshund 15months old. I live in Felixstowe England. Please can I ask you which E collar did you get. Thank you so much for listening.
Thank you for the suggestion of 15 mins 3 times a day for two weeks! I’m going to do that. I never hear anything about how long I should work on a command Keep the videos coming!!
I’m from the UK and I have an XL bull puppy and he’s 8 months old. He’s incredibly smart and knows when the leash is off, so he takes his time to come back and if he sees something he really “likes” he will not hear a single word, not see anything else and do exactly what it is that he “likes”. He’s never bitten anyone and is not aggressive to dogs, people or anything, he’s had kids slap him on the eyes and tug on him, he’s had dogs nip at his face because they’re scared or bark at him and he couldn’t care less, so his temperament is lovely. He just loves everyone, so I don’t want him running up to someone to say hello, they get spooked and hit him and he bites them back (even if he does it lightly, because of the bad press in the Uk, he will get put down immediately). Thank you so much for this video, I put off getting the e collar for so long because there’s so many trainers out there making videos about it just to say “buy my online course for the little price of £1000 to find out how to use the e collar”. Great to see a trainer that just cares about spreading the message to whoever needs it.
Exactly! What people don’t realize is it’s impossible to correct a dog when it’s off leash without an e-collar and it’s ESPECIALLY futile to do positive only training. If your dog sees something it “likes” more than the treat you’re holding, he suddenly becomes deaf and is gone!😂
Thanks to your advice on other ecollar episodes I have a 1 year old chi mix that has better recall than my other 7 dogs that are 3-16 years old. Radar can be on the back 2.5 acres, I can't see him or find him, say Radar here, and that lil dude beats a path to me, without the ecollar now. Never have to even put it on him anymore. Now I'm using it for my GSD tripod and she's doing much better than before. Let me tell you she knows how to play the handicap card and stop and rest...if she can turn a d head back out she's not THAT tired lol. Then it's that oh I'm thirsty and to the bucket she goes...nope lil girl there's water in the house, vibrate and here she comes again. LOVE your training Tom, you are AWESOME!! My vet says I have the best behaved bi lingual dogs he sees ❤️. (My sheps are trained in German). I sent your YT channel to him via text and he's recommending you to other clients with dogs 🤩
I've been using Dogtra collars with working dogs for about 15 years - love that brand (tried others and didn't care for them). I realize that people use e-collars (and train in general) in different ways, but in my case I prefer to use the buzzer (vibrate) feature for recall training and reserve the "nick" and the "bite" for corrections. The buzz is great for recall situations where you may not want to shout, or your dog may not be able to hear you (in the water, loud environment, etc). With the buzzer reserved for recall, I can save the "nick" for situations where I need to break the dog's fixation or correct minor behavior glitches. Also, as I think you mentioned, make sure that you use the collar for FUN things - walks, training, playing, hiking, etc - and not for punishment. My current dog LOVES the e-collar - he gets very excited when I pick it up. My last dog, however, would give me serious stink-eye when I put it on him (he was a rescue that had apparently been punished with the e-collar).
I am a 15 year old girl (this is my dads account) and I have a German shepherd. I watch you every day and I love you and your techniques so much. 🥰🥰 You teach me everyday.
Your off leash dog philosophy and training is exactly what I've been looking for! My Sadie is pretty well trained, with a pretty good recall, but her prey drive is strong, so I bought an e-collar to protect her from wildlife. Your training is practical and makes sense for us. Well done and thank you!! Now I'm less afraid to get going with the e-collar to protect her while she lives her best doggy life!
defiantly enlightened! always seen dogs with shock collars and gone hmm.. but my mate lent me one as my girls ears can be very painted on and can ignore my voice when on bush walks, i started using this a day ago , just using a very low vibrate and the sound and her head comes up and i have her attention so much quicker ! no shocking needed !! thank you so much for teaching us the correct way.
I wish I had found trainers like you when I started training with the e-collar! I keep beating myself up about it but my trainer at the time used it as punishment and when I saw him shocking the crap out of reactive dog I dropped him and started scouring the internet for more humane trainers. You and them have saved me from making things worse. I’m working on getting a dogtra collar because my current sport dog does’t have the diverse levels of stimulation. Keep spreading your knowledge!
I found your first video about 3 weeks ago and have now watched nearly all of your videos. I am from Austria and have a German Shepherd who unfortunately HAD the same difficulties. The dog trainers here couldn't help me. Now I've already achieved so much with your tips. I've ordered the Sprenger leash and I'm really curious to see if I can solve the dog problem, but I'm pretty sure of that. I appreciate your free videos and I wait for a new one every day. Thank you! :)
What you are doing is illegal, since ecollars are forbidden in Austria, by law. First offence will be several hundred €uros. Repeated misdoing can even get you in jail and your dog taken from you. Inform yourself at the vet. Same goes for Germany (since you have a German Shepherd) and most of Europe. Just to let you know, what you are dealing with.. Btw: In Austria, anybody may call himself "dog trainer". Try to find a licenced dog trainer, who studied and payed for his/her own education.
I have an eight month old woodle , he was very compliant until a few weeks ago. He has bolted several times now. Run across busy streets and we are lucky he didn’t get hurt. I am hoping to try the collar out today. Thank you for your informative videos.
Using these videos to remind me how to intro this again, lol. Got a puppy for christmas and now need to teach her how to respond like my other dog does, but I trained my other dog so very long ago.... I don't remember! LOL!!! So I am using these videos to remind me and get me and my pup on the fast track to awesomeness!
I love your videos. I work many dogs rehabbing them so they can find their forever homes. I love you used many different tools for what a particular dog needs. For me the reward I receive is when the dog I work with gives me their trust. The first time the come to me and present their bellies or come up to me and lick my hand, or come for a pet. Thank you for what you do.
My dogs get excited with joy when they see me get the ecollar off the shelf and put it on them. They know it is going to be fun, exciting and a lot of freedom to do things they enjoy. It is the best kind of training for safely letting the dog of leash. Just my opinion mind you.
My husband and I rescued our first dog together! She’s amazing and calm but I found your channel and I am so looking forward to trying the techniques that you’ve been teaching! I love how they’re so straightforward and informative!
My wife and I had our dog in two different types of training, positive re enforce and e collar/prong collar for walking. By far the best training we did was the e collar/prong. All the stuff I have seen in your videos including this one is what our train was teaching us.
Thanks, Tom. I started training dogs a couple years ago. Watching your videos reinforce what I was taught. The way you explain the use of tools has helped me communicate with people to help their dogs.
thought my dog had a decent recall until he wouldn’t recall after seeing a horse for the first time. Nothing happened thanks to the well trained horse and my dog just wanted to play but that could have gone really bad so now i’m here trying to learn how to be a better owner for my pup. thank you for sharing this
I have a Dogtra 1900S. I’ve tried training with it (but not enough yet) but my timing, when to activate the “buzz” I haven’t been exactly sure about until this video. Now I’ve got it, speak and press at the same time. Thanks as always, Tom! I will feel more confident I am signaling correctly.
Tom is a fantastic trainer, balance not only in methods proven but also in his approach to each dog and each owner. His ability to reach for the reasons and expectations to guide results is what positions him as a leader in the training industry. Like Larry Krohn, Michael Ellis and others of similar bent, Tom contributes immensely to understanding how and why to train, how to get results without steeping on your own feet and how to engage your dog. Listening to a podcast with his staff, it was like sitting in on the most fun workshop ever! Great team, love the reciprocation and respect each had for each other while having a blast. Truly, unusually in this hyper competitive field.
I have a 5 month old Doberman who is just now learning how to recall using the Ecollar (The Boss/1mile). I was a little apprehensive at first therefore was at a point of finding a private off leash trainer until I found your videos! You have helped me and Tessa so much and we thank you! 😊 Much love from Knoxville TN!
After watching your e collar videos and working with a trainer my dog is so much more independent on walks and hikes, love seeing her get to be a dog and keep her safe !!
You have such great videos. Thank you for sharing them with the world. Do you ever train with deaf dogs? We rescued a white boxer mix puppy who was 13 weeks old last year. We didn’t know she was deaf at the time but once we found out we hired an amazing dog trainer who trains like you. She is so well trained but there is a lack of great trainers online who give advice with deaf dogs. I would really love if you could show how to do all these training techniques with a deaf dog. Maybe people will be more willing to adopt them if they feel they can train them. Many people told me they would have returned her if they found out she was deaf. That makes me so sad because she is amazing, loving and the best dog ever.
The only correct way to use the E collar! I waas so confused of how its used and when, (tho i dont own a dog) but this video made it really easy! It's like training horses- pressure and release, no one learns from punishment. great video man!
You will eventually have to correct/punish the dog for noncompliance. When the dog definitely knows what 'come' or 'here' means, but chooses to ignore you, then you absolutely have to punish the dog to let them know it's not optional. There has to be a consequence for not listening or what's the point of training a command such as recall in the first place? That's the great thing about E-collar training - you can use low levels to teach desired behaviours and higher levels to stop bad/unwanted behaviours and correct noncompliance of known commands. X
We just hired a trainer to show us how to properly use the collar! Penny is doing so good and your videos have helped us become more confident in training! Thank you!
I came across you a few days ago and I'm now subscribed to you after watching bunches of others. You are clear and precise and it's very much appreciated. Thank you for doing this because I know it takes a bunch of your time.
I just paid $80 for an online video on this exact lesson subscribed and hope to learn more from you! Amazing content wishing you all the best from Southern California! Thanks again!
You're amazing, we're so grateful for all of your content, its the next best thing to meeting you! all the dogs you've helped and saved is beyond incredible, thank you Tom ❤
Love love your videos! I am continually learning how to be a better dog parent. So fun to see you in Phx (my home state), such a pretty city. I hope you had a chance to enjoy the city & some great food!
Thank you Tom for ALL of your training content and videos. AND your online training sessions are brilliant! My 6th month old Shepherd George has gone from a slip, to a prong and this is the next step. The pay off to following your methods is so rewarding for both my pup and me! 🍻
Loved this video as well as many of your others! I have listened to every single podcast at least once! Knowing the proper way to use these collars and not make it a bad experience is just what we need! Thank you for doing what you do
Great video. What about if he has something more interesting things to sniffs etc, then won"t come. Also if your dog's prey drive is so strong and wanted to chase a cat when you are calling then ignoring you?
Build a foundation and get 100 percent compliance than add distractions and do the same, sometimes they are stimulated by other things and u have to up the level of the stimulations in those situations
Thanks for the great content Tom. Just picked up a Dogtra E-collar for my recently rescued Pit/Boxer mix. Going to begin my journey toward having a confident, off leash outdoor companion. We are off to a great start with positive reinforcement obedience training and ready to take it to the next level with the e-collar. Technology for the win!
I have a question I have two French bulldogs one is a puppy and one is about 2 1/2 years old when my older dog gets on my mom the little one goes insane and starts fighting the older dog now the older dog is an angel he never has bit my eldest dog or has bit a person or growled at a person he's amazing g but the little one out of the blue started getting really aggressive how would you correct this behavior?
From a distance, it appears that the puppy is resource-guarding your mom. It views your mom as a resource. You have options. One is to study Thomas’s online videos or the other is to sign up on his America’s Canine Educator website for an online training session. An online session costs money, but may provide quicker results. P.S. Your puppy needs structure and leadership.
How would you apply this with a deaf dog??? thx for all your help and great videos I am buying the dogtra Tom Davis 280c but I am a bit unsure if its a good idea since my pooch is totally deaf.
I have been watching your videos and they are super helpful. I think I started using the e-collar incorrectly and now one of my dogs acts aggressively when I use it. Lucky it has only been used on 2 trainings. How can I restart the process? Also the dog is 10. I am also looking in to a local trainer. Thank you for these great videos.
THANK YOU, Tom - another amazing video. Started e-collar training following your guidance, and it's going very well. But I was afraid to use the tool until after binge-watching your videos on how to get started!
Awesome video with great tips for me to use! The first time using the collar my gsd didn't respond well! I tried making it a positive experience but when I would hit continuous she knew I was doing it with a remote. So she ended up running away when I'd grab the collar or remote. For the past couple weeks I've only been putting it on to take her outside for walks without using the remote. She no longer runs to a different room when I grab it! I think I will just use the nic button when I try to reintroduce it to her. Anyone else have this happen!?
Yay new video, I’ve been watching for a few weeks now and I’m learning so much for my reactive dog. You have given me hope🧡 A question I have for you is how do I get my dog to stop nipping at me when training or even when trying to put on the prong collar while I have the high value treats to help.
Would it be a good idea to use the e-collar to prevent reactivity? My trainer suggested it last week. I'm just wondering if there is something I can do to cut the reactivity before going to e-collar? My dog pit/lab mix snaps at even the calmest relaxed dogs ever
Hey, Janina, you absolutely can use the E-collar to stop dog reactivity! Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or does not know what they're talking about (no offense to the other people who responded to this question). It depends on a few things - is your dog leash-reactive towards other dogs, or is your dog actually aggressive? Real dog aggression should be tackled by an experienced professional. However, a bit of general nonsense is totally fixable with an E-collar. There is a very specific way to do it, though. Also, what kind of E-collar do you have? X
@@dogsareboss pretty sure it's just leash reactivity. I take him to the dog park and keep him solo on the timid dog side. He's fine with sniffs through the fence. I haven't worked up to letting him lose with other dogs. Still haven't started e-collar. We're going to professional training and working through a couple obedience issues first.
Do dogs need to be neutered for successful training? My local vets is not classing neutering for most cases as essential at the moment so can't happen for my 11 month old cavapoo pup. Any suggestions as he is becoming more dominant and overly excited when he sees (especially female) dogs?
Unclear as to which button is used and for what period of time. Do you use the continuous button when you call the dog and keep it pressed until the dog returns to you?
It would mean the world to me if you leave a like 👍🏻 and drop a comment to support the channel. Also here is the e collar I was using guys www.dogtra.com/products/e-collars/280c

Thanks, Tom. I started training dogs a couple years ago. Watching your videos reinforce what I was taught. The way you explain the use of tools has helped me communicate with people to help their dogs.
thought my dog had a decent recall until he wouldn’t recall after seeing a horse for the first time. Nothing happened thanks to the well trained horse and my dog just wanted to play but that could have gone really bad so now i’m here trying to learn how to be a better owner for my pup. thank you for sharing this
Awesome video and the information within was really helpful. I live in the UK 😊
Going to start with the prong collar this week with my husky and then e collar . Thank you for all advice and help!
How did the training go with your Husky? Are any of the tools you mentioned effective and still utilized?
I have a 5 month old Doberman who is just now learning how to recall using the Ecollar (The Boss/1mile). I was a little apprehensive at first therefore was at a point of finding a private off leash trainer until I found your videos! You have helped me and Tessa so much and we thank you! 😊 Much love from Knoxville TN!
Welcome to Phoenix! Hope you had a good time!
Thanks again for great doggie content. You can see how happy the dog is to please you. Win win for all.
Thank you!
Heck ya! Thanks so mucj!
WOW! I am looking into a E collar and just sent a message to a trainer yesterday.
Here ya go!
I'm watching this video in minus temperatures and I'm so jealous :D. Thanks again for the content.
Already know I'm here to show some support and tell you how awesome you are!! Love this so much! Thank you for helping explain this to the public! 🙌 ❤
Thanks so much Lisa!
@@tomdavisofficial always!
Give this man a tv show!!!! He’s got it 👌🏼
I came across you a few days ago and I'm now subscribed to you after watching bunches of others. You are clear and precise and it's very much appreciated. Thank you for doing this because I know it takes a bunch of your time.
Very hopeful
Good job Tom.
I just paid $80 for an online video on this exact lesson subscribed and hope to learn more from you! Amazing content wishing you all the best from Southern California! Thanks again!
Can you maybe make a video in the future explaining how to make a very shy and scared dog feel safe and to help him be more social with other people
Have you checked on the playlist for this channel?
the buzz function works just as well as nick
Nice info about how to use ecollar correctly.
making this training a positive experience. thank you.
Great training practice! We love our ecollar. The level has never gone over 16 (out of 100), just hasnt been needed.
Thanks so much, yes its huge to stay low~
You're amazing, we're so grateful for all of your content, its the next best thing to meeting you! all the dogs you've helped and saved is beyond incredible, thank you Tom ❤
Oh this is so helpful!! Thank you so much. I was anxious to use the collar. Now I get it.
I love that you love the dogs !
Another well articulated video! You're so good at everything you do with dogs! So fun to watch! Thank you!
So you stop the stimulation when the dog gets to you???? Is that right???
Just starting training with an E collar
Happy to have found your videos 😊
That's what I thought he said, did you ever find out from another source?
Thank you for this and getting right to the point and actually showing the training
Love love your videos! I am continually learning how to be a better dog parent. So fun to see you in Phx (my home state), such a pretty city. I hope you had a chance to enjoy the city & some great food!
Amazing trainer And so easy to listen to and follow. Thank you all the way from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you Tom for ALL of your training content and videos. AND your online training sessions are brilliant! My 6th month old Shepherd George has gone from a slip, to a prong and this is the next step. The pay off to following your methods is so rewarding for both my pup and me! 🍻
that was informative...great stuff...good job you said peace when you gave us all 2 fingers. ..lolz...
Thanks so much!
Another great one!!
Thanks Kelley!
Loved this video as well as many of your others! I have listened to every single podcast at least once! Knowing the proper way to use these collars and not make it a bad experience is just what we need! Thank you for doing what you do
Another excellent video man!!!! I love it!
Benny is doing so well! 😊 Thank you again Tom!
Yep! Thanks for watching!
You have a video of this type of recall training of pure breed huskies? thanks
Just a great video, thanks so much for putting it together, simple and to the point! Can’t wait to start this with my Boston Terrier.
love the use of the soundbox! Super helpful!! And, great video. Your videos have truly changed the relationship with my dog!!
i have the ET 300 Mini educator doing pretty good
He is so handsome ❤️❤️
Bennt boy!!
Technology for the win!
can you a video about teaching the basic obedient commands? and more videos with training rescue dogs?
So you use only the ONE time button? not the continuous? Whhen would one use the continuous?
Thanks
I have a question I have two French bulldogs one is a puppy and one is about 2 1/2 years old when my older dog gets on my mom the little one goes insane and starts fighting the older dog now the older dog is an angel he never has bit my eldest dog or has bit a person or growled at a person he's amazing g but the little one out of the blue started getting really aggressive how would you correct this behavior?
Now the little one only gets like this when my 2 year old dog gets near my mom
Let the older dog correct the rude puppy and put puppy in time out
@@lindamarshbts-army774 the little puppy literally starts fighting to the death with it we take her away and she just wants to keep fighting
I would love if you could do a video on basic obedience for adult dog
Okay!
Very helpful video. Great advice. 💪🏼🐺
Been waiting for a new video 🔥
Thanks for the support Connor!
You're a beast Tom thanks for another great video!
Thank you Tom
This is great! We'll work on this!
So, the stim is used after you call the dog's name and give the command. Correct?
Yay new video, I’ve been watching for a few weeks now and I’m learning so much for my reactive dog. You have given me hope🧡 A question I have for you is how do I get my dog to stop nipping at me when training or even when trying to put on the prong collar while I have the high value treats to help.
Thanks for watching :)! I would use your leash and work on off or leave it with the leash.
Thankyou I will start putting that into my training have a great day!
How long do you condition a dog with e-collar recall ? and when is it safe to start letting them of the training lead?
Would it be a good idea to use the e-collar to prevent reactivity? My trainer suggested it last week. I'm just wondering if there is something I can do to cut the reactivity before going to e-collar? My dog pit/lab mix snaps at even the calmest relaxed dogs ever
@@beth1001 we're already on a prong. He pulls through it or just doesn't respond.
Now how do you train the e-collar recall for when he’s off leash around other dogs?
You don’t. Start with no distractions first and then build up when the dog is more confident
U build foundation and add distraction and sometimes you have to up the level
Do dogs need to be neutered for successful training? My local vets is not classing neutering for most cases as essential at the moment so can't happen for my 11 month old cavapoo pup. Any suggestions as he is becoming more dominant and overly excited when he sees (especially female) dogs?
Great video Tom!
Unclear as to which button is used and for what period of time. Do you use the continuous button when you call the dog and keep it pressed until the dog returns to you?
Once again another great, informative video!
