A doe that’s meaty, maternal, and worm resistant is worth her weight in gold. I’d buy a doe like that any day of the week!! Thank you for spreading the idea that there are other traits the registered goats should be selected for!

Wow! That was amazing! This is the kind of thing people want to hear. I think this type of realization comes with experience. Not only with what you have learned from your goat operation over the years but also general experience that comes to us with age. As we stop caring so much about what other people think too.
Our goats have improved so much over the last 15 years. (very few people care about this other than us.) We have made the decision to close our herd this year. Don't need to chase down genetics any longer. we have what we need right in our little herd. Registering the breeding stock is still a necessary evil. It has cost us thousands of dollars. Is it really worth it? I can keep track of pedigrees for less. Thanks for all you do. Exciting news and insight.

Very insightful and informative! Thank you. I think we need to remember, these goats are supposed to be MEAT goats not show barbie doll goats.

yeah i agree with many of that... once i got a goat that was expensive at auction but she was worth what i paid but i always like to pay less for the unknown and she was very pretty and friendly both in the stall and while she was being auction and it had all what i liked but as soon as she and others i bought went to trailer after auction i saw her twice bully others while i stood outside looking at them.. i got buyer remorse very fast and i asked if anyone wanted to buy a goat to others loading trailer and i didnt care how good she was as soon as i get that feeling that somebody is not right fit for my group they go and she went.. i almost got what i paid for her but i also thought if she didnt get sold than she would get very short term with me.

That's an awesome plan and I'm with you on the original style of the boer goat. Its what im trying for in my boer goats. As a dairy and boer goat breeder also depth of body and the importance of the larger brisket and the proper body structure and genetics is so important.

Crushed limestone under the straw in pens & dusting goats with Diatomaceous Earth helps with mites.

I agree I feel like we have bred for aesthetics and not functionality

Our kids take market goats for 4h. My daughter raised a bottle baby who was born in January. Once he was about 6-8 weeks old, we just let him outside with the dogs all day. He spent all day running around the yard. A few months later, we got the rest of our market goats. The other goats have had respiratory issues, diarrhea, etc. The bottle baby has never had one issue. He's hardy, strong, and a sweetie.
Also, how awful that the kids you've sold your goats to didn't put the work in. Our goats gain about 4-8 lbs. Evert few weeks. Our kids also work with their goats every morning and every night.

I agree with you both I am a small breeder. I have 23 now. I try to sale to small breeders and 4-H. We show there also. It's definitely hard when some go buy ready to show goat's and don't put in the work.

Looking forward to the toxemia video. What other resources would you recommend to a beginner for learning what characteristics to breed for?

Liquid pour on is super easy to treat mites

A couple people more recently that approached us for goat meat preferred them on the lighter side. One gentleman of Indian heritage preferred kids a little lighter, more around 50 lbs and leaner meat. I would have traditionally treated the situation more like cattle and fed feedlot style...maybe something to consider going into the future endeavor and the potential buyer base you maybe encounter in your area🤷‍♂.
