Using a nontrivial example was a great idea. I was able to learn how to not only troubleshoot and resolve conversion issues, but also a generic TeX issues.
Is it successfull with documents containing many longtables? I am originally doing my thesis in latex but due to longtables, I am stuck. Please let me know.
I agree that it is not a perfect solution but at the same time you don't have to start from scratch of you want to covert a word document to a latex one.

You can have long tables in latex. There is a package that helps you with that.

I don't really see a point to Pandoc if it can't make the conversion correctly without loosing formatting , picture settings, bibliography etc.
I agree that it is not a perfect solution but at the same time you don't have to start from scratch of you want to covert a word document to a latex one.
It may helpful if you combine Pandoc with thing like Python to make a reporting automation.
