The Mezzotint is one of the finest stories of its kind I have ever heard. In fact, I had never even heard of M.R. James until today. So many authors, so little time.
I don’t scare but last night I listened to it in the dark and I genuinely got the creeps from the crawling figure in black! Well done to the narrator 😂
MR James is great, isn't he? I discovered him recently too, thanks to TH-cam and exceptional storytellers like Tony. The Mezzotint was the first one I heard and it blew me away
Never heard of MR James ? Where have you been Innsmouth? His storys have been filmed many times in the 60s, 70s, and just last xmas the Mezzotint itself. A warning to the Curious, has been filmed twice that l know of, Oh Whistle And I'll Come to You, again twice as too the Stalls Of Barchester many many more
M R James father of the modern ghost story. He left behind Gothic tropes. James authored studies of Ancient Christian art for his day job. His Antiquarian studies are still used today as he based his research on art as well as text and so opened up the subject like no one before. James was from a strong Anglican upbringing which left him less prepared to tackle discoveries of demons than perhaps a Catholic upbringing may have. It has been pointed out that James was very conflicted by what he astutely uncovered in the medieval art. Depiction of evil was fully exposed and he may have dealt with what he astutely uncovered through these unprecedented stories.
I am glad you enjoyed The Mezzotint because of all M R James it's my fav! He was so modern considering he was writing before WW2. The understated tone is what sets it up so well. I have seen the same concept used only once in a film vignette about a guy who knows this big black hound is gonna eat him because he sees it coming closer in a painting.
I just love the older Michael Hordern narration versions of these but these are also very good. 💗 to everyone reading this & enjoying these spooky tales.
@@ClassicGhost I understand completely, though I live on a hill & it will not flood my neighbors live in a flood plain & one of them keeps a camper trailer/RV/caravan in his yard ready to go b/c his house flooded ... he said he is worried every time it rains hard
This is perfect. M.R. James often puts me to sleep anyway, he does go on! Here in Northern California we are getting some wonderful, glorious rain and snow!!! Filling up our nearly empty reservoirs!
I love them, written in such precious, sophisticated, elaborate English to enjoy for us all. And yes, I really have that old cottage with a chimney here in the centre of France, an old well to tell forgotten stories of rain, water, and the hard labour to fetch it 25 meters deep. And I have some old cristal glasses for the port, crisis survivors, cherished. And a bit of firewood, rationed, for the dark winter they prepare for us all. These stories, chosen with care and taste, help to evade after hard days of work and preparing, the drop of port in an old glass and your peaceful voice truly make a perfect match to relax and forget the worries for à little while this Christmas time...
Absolutely my favorite voice in story telling.. Your dogs add a lovely reality to a wondrous listening experience . Thank you. Please continue to provide these curiously taunting tales.
I must have listened to The Mezzotint at least 30 times over the years. It seems to encapsulate the soul of MR James to me, and I can just picture myself at one of his select suppers for his favourite boys, sitting around the fire and being enthralled by these stories. Thank you Tony. You are such a good reader. ❤
I find this narrators voice so utterly soothing. Combined with the excellent stories is an absolute winner. Keep doing these I rely on them especially with rain in the background lovely when you are tucked cozily in bed with the curtains closed and a lamp on I couldn’t ask for anything more. Absolute perfection.
The Mezzotint! This story has been horrifying me since I was 8 or 9---I honestly do believe that this darkest of dark tales was instrumental in......ZZZZZzzzzzzz......(thanks for the raindrops).
Ooh!! This is Very, Very Good and Scary!! Thank you so Much Again for keeping me company during this restless night!! ❤Jasper is Stuck to me and I'm too hot with the Flu!! But he Cares about me, (*Ooops did I write that out loud?!) unlike the Grumpy Mr D.
Thank you so much for this upload! I just realized it's been up for 3 weeks, lol. I've seemed to be losing track of days since my admission and discharge, but I still seem to have very little memory of the past few weeks. This is a perfectly brilliant combination: Tony Walker and M.R. James! An early Christmas present for me. I have my evening planned now; my meds, electric blanket and some hot soup or something; and then hopefully be able to doze and get some sleep!!! Thank you Tony for all of your hard work in brushing off these old classics, and introducing to new generations of people. And I'm sure we are all feeding the same trolls. All we can do for them is to let them disrupt the community, and forcefeed them like veal ( whether it be their gender, politics, fat being beautiful or anything else) so their pacified; then all of our free time can be devoted to listening!
That works really well, not in any way intrusive, as though you were reading it on a rainy winter day. I think it's your turn to pick the next one. I know you are busy but if you fancied doing one for Christmas?
great job, as always. (the bathos of the odd 'beep beep' emerging from the rain track was at first off-putting. then it became a relief as the tension mounted.)
I live on the north east coast in UK, Tynemouth. Occasionally we get fog and the fog horn is so loud! I once had to introduce it into a hypnotherapy session as it was just there.. couldn't ignore it!
I live in an area where we don't get too much fog, but I have always been enthralled by it for some reason, and I love the foghorn sound myself; it's unfortunate sometimes that an artist must please his audience ( patrons, customer base, etc), and sacrifice artistic integrity. A fog horn is a small thing to be sure, but it's very strange to me the little things people put real drama into.! I remember reading a story as a young girl, called Fog Magic. It was listed as a young adult book, but frankly I think it would be enjoyable for adults as well. In essence, guess it is a ghost story; because when the young girl, Greta ( the protagonist) sees the fog start rolling in, Tolliver ( the fog horn blows) and when she walks down the lane in through the fog, she enters a time slip. Every burned out house and ruined foundation of the old town is still there! Peopled, and they continue to live there year-round. Unfortunately, the only time Greta can see them and interact with them is during the fog. Once the fog starts dissipating, she needs to rush back through or risk getting stuck there. It was this story that fostered my interest in fog, quantum physics, and the supernatural.

I first listened to Michael Horndern’s recordings of the James stories. I feel that this version is just as good but in different ways.
Can't thank you enough for these. Rather ill and alone the past few weeks and these, despite being ghost stories are wonderful company. Many thanks.
