  • Five years after Anselm Kiefer’s exhibition for the inauguration of our gallery in Pantin, and following his retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2015/2016, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is pleased to present a new series of works by the artist in Paris.
The exhibition brings together a selection of around twenty paintings along with three sculptures, which reflect the sedimentation of memory cherished by the artist. With an unprecedented formal inventiveness, the paintings reflect the artist’s continuous interest in the process of destruction and regeneration. By pouring molten lead, Kiefer obliterates the original image and brings to life his own work in a radically iconoclastic gesture.
The exhibition is dedicated to Andrea Emo (1901-1983), an Italian philosopher whose nihilist thinking has fuelled the development of Kiefer's work.

If you realize what he has done.... he had these canvases which he had abandoned... old ones new ones.... so instead of leaving them as it is... he poured molten lead on it and melted the paint.. and shaped the metal... and post facto added the Biblical serpents etc....

OK, very cringe. And besides... making a statement about geniuses in a sentenc with spelling mistakes has a certain irony.

Anyone else think Anselm Keifer is truly overrated? Nothing that he does speaks to me. It’s like this faint ghost in place of life.

His Name is Kiefer not Keizer.

@@appletongallery I don't know if you've had the chance to see one of Kiefers works in person, but they consume you. The sheer size of them is intimidating to the point where they seem almost alien. You have to stand a good 10 meters away from the work to see it in its full glory, and the closer you get the more of its texture unveils itself to you. His paintings are three dimensional, spilling out of the canvas. The artists you listed were all fantastic at making beautiful art - art you could hang in your living room, but I'd go as far as saying that Kiefer does more than that. He's managed to create his own world within our world. I'd suggest looking up his set designs and studios, they're truly magical. Out of curiosity, do you think Gerhard Richter is overrated?

Max Theodor - I’ve never seen the work live so maybe I don’t like it because I don’t like it in the photos I’ve seen. Exactly on Gerhard Richter. I think he is mostly awful.

Max Theodor - I think you pinpointed something I don’t like in most post- modern work- it is not beautiful. Francis Bacon, Soutine, Willem de Kooning all have a violence about them but they are also beautiful.
