- Non-fiction author Sebastian Junger left his mark on the genre in 1997 with "The Perfect Storm." He went on to become a war correspondent, and came close to death on the battlefield, but never had a near-death experience like he did just a few years ago. Now, that's the subject of his newest book, "In My Time of Dying." Jeff Glor has more.

My condolences on your loss. I recently listened to a Navy SEAL speak on his NDE and his comment: “The body knows how to die”, struck a chord; therefore, one might consider that these visions are merely the minds coping mechanism when confronting death. The brain is very complex.
I had a near death experience. It wasn't just a story. It was reality. I'm not afraid to die
100% with you on this. I haven't had an NDE. I believe in them with zero doubt. I am not afraid to die, There is so much more to the universe than what we see in this plane of existence. It is not "crazy"!
Why is life after death any crazier than being here in the first place...
We get used to being here and take every second of this miracle for granted over and over again until we're faced with an uncertainty like death...
When people are dying the "veil" gets thinner and thinner. Its a shift in consciousness. (I had a NDE.)
Also, one doesn't have to be dying to see people who have died.
Years ago we had just moved into our home and I'd met an elderly neighbor gentleman who lived up the street.
Not long afterwards he died and later appeared to me and he was so happy!!! He gave me a message to give to his wife. A message that made no sense to me.
It took me a LONG time to get the courage to tell her but when I did she was so grateful! She KNEW it was from him because of the message.
I felt so honored that he presented himself to me and still do to this day. ✨💛✨
The stress of his work I’m sure caused his aneurysm. I’m so glad he’s still with us. God works in truly mysterious ways. God loves him and wanted him to be saved. Ty Lord.
I lost my daughter at 24 three years ago. I hope she was met by loved ones when she crossed over. Stories like this give me hope that she was not alone❤

In my father's last hour he looked up and called out his dead best friend's name, I could tell that he could see him, he was so happy. When he died in my arms he looked so happy and peaceful. Hours earlier he was terrified of dying, he was hanging on for all he was worth but once he saw his friend he let go, I know it. Still, my first reaction was deep, deep fear of where he went and if he was okay. What comforts me is that I truly believe that he actually saw his best friend. I don't agree with Sebastian Junger when he said that if you don't see anyone you have errored in some way....we have all errored...my dad errored.
I remember when my Dad appeared in front of me after his 10th day of passing away and told me don't worry I'm with u. I was going through a bad abuse by my husband (actually a monster) in those days. I was hiding from him in the garage, I was scared to death, and my phone was not with me to call someone for help. In the next two days, My husband Started suffering from a chronic illness and was bedridden.
Beautiful story. Sadly, I hope to not see my parents when I'm near death - I hope to see my best friend, who gave me the gift of acceptance with no judgment. And a clear vision of what it is to live.
I’ve been following Junger From day one many years ago. I’ve always been fascinated with photojournalism. These people are braver than braver. So much admiration.
Had an NDE in 1992. Was real for me. Fell into a black tunnel. Had a life review. All of it. Still think about it often.
TH-cam offers a wealth of videos on Near Death Experiences. I suggesst that anyone with doubts, questions, fears, or any other emotion about what happens when we die, just go have a look at several of them. Form your own conclusions, but do so with at least a clearer view of what thousands of people have experienced.

I looked at several of them and found it to be natural biological processes the body goes through during death which imitates something spiritual.

Other things that those having NDEs can see (which can't be explained by drugs): seeing/hearing what's going on elsewhere - i.e., specific things being said by a relative who lives in another location, or what's going on elsewhere in the hospital. Also, there are shared NDE experiences, such as a relative visiting a dying person seeing exactly what the dying person is suddenly seeing just prior to death.
They also can't explain any of the other things this guy thinks they can.
@@Mr.Goodkat one of the most memorable and fascinating stories is Dr. Jeff O’Driscoll’s along with Jeff Olsen’s shared death story … it’s what solidified Dr. Raymond Moody’s (coined the term NDE) belief in the afterlife after 50 plus years of research.
Junger comes off as condescending by referencing he’s a man of science and is not into woo-woo. Well, there are many, many, many NDE experiencer’s who have scientific backgrounds and they keep their scientific backgrounds and embrace the spiritual realm … science and woo-woo are not mutually exclusive. He might be very surprised if he opened is mind up..
It happened to me. My deceased mom came to me, waved her arms toward herself as if beckoning me toward her. She kept saying, Come to me. I told her, I cannot! I must stay here with my son! I fought death at the hands of my former husband who was attempting to strangle me to death. It was one hell of a frightening experience.
The reason why it is so difficult for humans to believe is EXACTLY BECAUSE we feel the need to rationalise EVERYTHING!
Atheists cannot believe without seeing because all they are is rational.

I wasn't in a trauma induced coma when I was with G-D. It was magical and real, Not hopped up on drugs.
As a writer/journalist he has my respect. Personal experience is personal. Respect.

I like his approach to his experience. He doesn’t automatically chalk it up to an afterlife. Whether that’s what it is or not, the fact is we just don’t know for sure.

There is an explanation. There is no life after death but the brain when dying creates a dream which eventually appears to last forever, because when consciousness shifts your perception of time changes. A little bit like Inception and a little bit like how the chatter of children speeds up the closer they get to falling asleep. I can’t EXACTLY quantify it but imagine if the first few seconds seems like a minute and then the next few seconds seems like 10 minutes and the next few seconds seems like an hour etc. It doesn’t take too long for three minutes or five minutes later for the next few seconds to seem like months and years. A simple doubling every minute would accomplish this. For instance two raised to the 20 power is about 1 million so….suppose it takes 20 minutes to die….that last minute is gonna seem like 1,000,000 seconds which is just under 300 hours or 12 days. Now suppose instead of doubling every minute time doubles every 10 seconds.
That’s the most sensible hypothesis I can conjure. I’ve also had a similar experience. And I knew that my brain was lying to me, but it was very pleasant nonetheless.
And ask yourself the question why the people who have NDE’s always see dead people they know and not dead people they don’t know. For instance did you see Julius Caesar? Or Einstein or George Washington? The answer is the brain begins with its past and weaves a new creative web of fantasy that makes sense; and, as it starts losing oxygen little by little speeds up time.
I can relate as in 2016 I died 8 times on the way to the hospital and saw some major things. I wrote about it in my INSIDER article last year in September 2023.

Perhaps, especially if they chose those parents in order to have a certain life experience. Also, I've heard that people reunite with those they know very well from past lifetimes.
Yes, if they all are in heaven. Hell is a all together terrifying place of torment. I believe anyone who goes there will suffer and be alone for eternity.

You can always reproduce a Near Death Experience by re-creating the circumstances of Near Death Experiences. But whether it’s done with drugs or an aneurysm that still doesn’t explain the nature or the origins of the conscious experience. Putting your foot in wet cement doesn’t mean you created the wet cement.

Read his book in two sittings. Found it well written and most informative as with all of his books. Whether you believe in NDE’s or not it’s enough to make you stop and think about the well documented phenomena. Will we all experience such a phenomenon? Death is way too varied and personal to make such a claim and to base an entire belief system on such an experience but this book poses some serious questions about our existence and NDE heuristics.

On the one hand it's sad that he refuses to accept that there's more to life than we can ever possibly know, us poor mere mortals, while we're stuck here on earth and living strictly in this dimension. On the other hand, it's understandable, the difficulty of trying to wrap one's head around what else might be possible **because** we can't know, and if you're geared toward having at the very least an adequate explanation for everything, as he appears to be, it's even harder.
I'm an agnostic for all of these reasons, not in terms of whether there's something more - I've had enough experiences to know without a doubt that there is, but in terms of knowing what, exactly, it all is, how it all works, and if there's a God involved, who or what, exactly, that entity might be. I lean toward the Judeo-Christian concept of God because those are the ones I've been most exposed to, and I know that evil exists, as well. But more than an attempt to deny Christ or any other supreme being, I simply have a difficult time not being open to the full and complete range of what our existence means, and how it all works, and I don't think the Bible nearly covers half of it becase as an ancient text written by men open to interpretation, there's a lot missing.
These are the same questions and concepts humans have been struggling with since the dawn of man, and everyone wants to have the answers, but there seems to be an arrogance about a lot of those who believe they have them, and that's where the trouble often lies. Many atheists are just as sure of their beliefs as theists are, but one thing they share in common is they're more than happy to look down their noses upon us idiots who don't possess the same knowledge they have. Personally, I can't believe myself to be superior in the slim bit of knowledge I do have - perhaps that's where my trouble lies.
Whatever the case, I tend to subscribe to what I call the David Letterman Philosophy of Life, which stems from something he once said to Bill O'Reilly while interviewing him as a guest on his late night show: "I don't know, but I don't really think you do, either."

I'm the same - I spend a lot of time reading comments on things like this because I really want to know what people have to say about stuff like this, and I've always found the subject matter fascinating. I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around it, but then again I'm not sure we're actually given the capacity to understand it. If we were, we'd probably have too hard a time being here. Which leads me to ask, why are we here then? 😂
@@bobbicampbell5233 I definitely agree! I always ask those questions myself, especially when it comes to what happens to us after we die. It can be difficult to understand these stories because many of the experiencers have a hard time putting them into words and often interpret what they saw through their own perspectives and beliefs. Also, going back to your last question, I used to be more skeptical of any spiritual elements until I realize how good it feels to be here in the first place. We often take for granted our surroundings and don't even contemplate how nearly perfect the circumstances were for our planet to be "just right" for life to form.

Glad Junger's still with us, glad for his participation in the very real fact of NDEs---the belief in which greatly enhances our brief lives before our afterlifes.
This guy must really have a phobia for doctors and hospitals. He had all the warning signs that something was seriously wrong and waited way too long to get help. When he was interviewed by Joe Rogan, he took way longer to get help and what he’s admitting to in this interview.

The great edifice of scientific materialism that has ruled mainstream thought for about two hundred years- maybe since Spinoza in the mid 17th century -is showing cracks. In fact, it is mortally wounded and will not survive the next 100 years. (Assuming we come up with a solution to climate change, for if we do not, there won’t be much human life here anymore to worry about life after death.) The anomalies are growing and growing, and the physicalist paradigm will not be able to bear the weight much longer- near death experiences, consciousness studies, psychic phenomena, and many other categories of experience are gaining academic attention. There is Rice University”s Archives of the Impossible, U. Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies, people like Diana Walsh Pasulka and Harvard’s Avi Loeb, Stanford’s Garry Nolan are a few examples. Get ready, the way you view reality is going to change.

Sees a black dark pit and is aware that many others have experienced NDEs. They share many commonalities. Many see a bright tunnel and God figure and others see a pit with demonic beings. The fact we are alive and breathing beings on Earth is a miracle. It’s not too hard to believe there is something after we die.
A person sees dead people in dreams, why would they act like this is so strange?
You would have to experience it for yourself in order to understand. Its very different. There is no explaining the spiritual.

My point being that we see our loved ones, dead or otherwise, in our dreams all the time. This is not the big deal. The bigger deal is why were more aware at a certain time versus another that this is a profound experience :)
Ok, I understand what you are saying, or asking, I think. Are you wondering what is the difference between seeing a departed loved one in a dream versus a near death experience or life after death experience. I guess that is something to think about. But really, I think what's more important is what is happening in the dream or NDE. What happened in his experience terrified him.
I think whatever it was he experienced is more of a warning to him. God speaks to us in so many different ways. Its up to us to pay attention, listen to Him and seek Him. He will reveal Himself to anyone who seeks Him. Draw close to Him and He will draw close to you.
You don’t have to be dying to see dead people.
We are all one eternal consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is a dream in which we are the imagination of ourselves.
Always seems to be a book deal with these stories. Be skeptical with this stuff.

There are experiences people have that aren’t explained by just brain activity, like being outside their body, seeing things take place in other locations, and being able to verify it afterwards. There was this one woman who had no brain activity, being put into that state intentionally while going through brain surgery, who had a near death experience - Pam Reynolds.
@@ElleGen Agree; people recall complete conversations/things they saw in other locations, and recall them accurately. It's a Mind/Consciousness thing and not contingent on whether the brain is active. I don't believe consciousness dies when one leaves the body.
A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'...
My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE, when I was struck by lightning during September 1970.
Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave.
The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist.
For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is.
Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment.
The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing.
The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence.
The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists.
Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’.
On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication.
For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything.
NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

He's right, much of the research has shown that near-death "like" experiences can be reproduced. However, as far as I have read, science has yet to even interview someone who has had a NDE and also, in another situation, had medical event or situations NDE-like experience to compare the two. Just because you can reproduce an experience doesn't mean it is an accurate portrayal. I would like to know, from a person who has had these two types of experiences if they are the same: one that is a reproduction of NDE and the other being a real NDE. My guess, they are not similar. Besides seeing dead people upon one's death, people who have NDE come back with knowledge about all sorts of things or have witnessed what was occurring when they were unconscious. Science can't explain the accuracy of the knowledge. I think NDE is even more credible when atheists have these experience. I can see why some people are afraid of this phenomenon. It can change theology of a religion especially if one is open minded.
The dark pit that opened behind him was hell. You have to accept god in order to join him. Surprised despite his experience he refuses to believe. He’s going to great lengths not to believe. Odd.

Seeing dead relatives while in a trauma-induced state is remarkable, but not evidence of anything spiritual or supernatural. If a Hindu sees their dead relative during an NDE, does that prove the Hindu god is real or that their relatives are in some cosmic realm?
At the end of the day it's 100% unknown what will happen
God doesn’t enter the picture. Seeing the dead is common when near death as well. And evidence shows that your near death experience may be tied to your own cultural references and desires. He saw his dead dad. I hope that was a meaningful experience. Did it feel real? Did he ask what being dead means? Do we continue to exist in an afterlife? Or are these desired hallucinations? It’s complicated.

Yes, we will see them again in heaven. They will be in a spiritual body which none of us here can understand. Its beyond earthly comprehension or scientific explanation. We can not explain it.

Not sure what’s the big issue with explaining seeing dead people- it’s called a hallucination. If you don’t believe in the after life then there IS a perfectly legitimate explanation for seeing these visions- hallucinations. The mind does this ALL THE TIME. Elderly people in hospitals, especially those with dementia, hallucinate all the time when they have delirium. People who have psychotic episodes, such as in schizophrenia, or a psychotic event in a manic episode also hallucinate. It’s not a mystery at all. The mind hallucinates.
If you have ever encountered God in heaven or anything spiritual, you can feel and know this is not just a hallucination or a vision. The person having an encounter knows the difference. Sebastian could feel the terror of what he experienced. And there is no explaining it to someone like you who has not encountered the spiritual.

Yep. Its real. The body will die. The second you breath your last, your spirit will enter into eternity. It will go either 1 of 2 places. God gives us the free will to choose. He loves all of us. But, not everyone loves Him.
Actually, from what I have seen in NDEs, they say, they are more alive than they ever were in body. No pain, no suffering, no bad feelings, if your heaven. The other place is the complete opposite. Don't go there!🙏

Young boy in the hospital at the brink of death has an N.D. E. Said he went to heaven and his sister appears before him and tells him it is not your time to pass. You need to go back and finish your life. Little boy regains consciousness and tells his family that he was in heaven and saw his sister and she told him it was not his time to die that he needed to come back. The boys father gets upset and tells the boy that could not have happened because his sister was away at College. The Doctor tells the family that they need to go home and get some rest. The family goes home and as they walk through the door they receive a phone call from the University that the sister attends and they tell them they had been trying to get in touch with them all night and that sadly their daughter had been involved in a fatal accident that night and she had been killed. Believe me I was in heaven because I to had a nde and I’ll make this story short when I came back to life into my small 8 yr old body I could wait to tell my mom that when I was in heaven I saw a man that would marry my mom in the future and he would be a builder of homes 🏠 and build her a English tutor home I even drew the picture for my mom and she always kept the picture in case it came true and well guess what it all came true this home was built by the man I saw in heaven it is settled in the country you see my real farther passed away when I was only 4 yrs old oh and I was given 4 beautiful gifts which my family and friends are aware of I have given many readings to people and I can see visions and spirits off and on I have videos and pictures to prove it the pictures are of spirit orbs moving in my home and when my puppy passed away she came to visit with us and you can see clearly that it was her her spirit orb was laying in her bed with her toys Iam and I also could see my body while I was being operated on and I could here every word the doctor and nurses were saying word for word I could say more about my trip to heaven but it would take much to long may god bless everyone.
