Mate your content is class - hands down the best football TH-cam content. We all have an off day - I'd say you did pretty well to still be positive after that one! Have you been to Clydebank? If not, any chance of a video on them?
Definitely right to upload the video. Just because there were issues and cost was over budget doesn't make it less entertaining. If anything it's more as life doesn't always go to plan bit like football!
Hey man, thank you for uploading this video! To clarify I’m the guy you spoke to at the reception. Absolutely gutted this happened during your stay: absolute nightmare for all guests staying. Like I mentioned a guest staying in the hotel did not just sound the alarm but broke one of the emergency (glass) fire alarms so we could not turn it off simply by code. Terribly sorry this happened again, but it was truely outside of our control. Thank god this is the first time (in my 7 years here…)
Mate. If it had been me I would not have been blaming you for what happened and what you had to say to the refund request but your boss should have given some sort of compensation to the guests, even if it was just part of their money back or if it is part of a chain he could have given a discount foucher for use in one of the other hotels. "out of our control" is not a valid excuse. (well.. for you it is because you boss said so but for the hotel... nope)
You cant just turn off a fire alarm for safety reasons. The installation has to be reset with a security code. I think what they tried to explain is that the new night guard wasnt aware of this or something, or wasnt authorized to have this code. Not an excuse though, its totally the hotels fault that this was obviously not sorted more quickly. Just saying that its a bit more involved than just flipping a switch.
@yoloswaggins9989 That seems extremely unsafe in a hotel situation with potentially dozens of people sleeping. So only a properly trained person with the code that counts as a guarantee he is licensed to operate a fire prevention system, can switch it off in The Netherlands. I mean, what if its just some guy who thinks nothing is going on when there is an actual fire?
@ageoflove1980 You would be surprised. I come at locations where you dont even need a code, or key to reset the system. You literally press the button that says reset. Most of the times the systems are in a place where only staff can come and if its not "just people" mostly dont dare to touch it because there is loads of other buttons and alarms going off. Anyone can touch fire alarms and security systems in most buildings. They just dont, mostly.
Still a good video Sam, it tells the real story of what can happen when you go abroad on a city break instead of pretending everything went according to plan. Loving this series and so are all my pals
As a Heerenveen supporter, im glad to see you watch a game (eventho we played like sh*t, just glad we got the 3 points 🤣. first points we got in an away game, eventho we havent lost at home yet). Hope to see you cover more of Dutch football in the future ♥
As a former hotel front desk worker: Really weak for the hotel to use such excuses for the fire alarm. So what if it wasn't "within their control"? If it bothered all of the guests, several times a night mind you, they should report the (likely drunk) guest to the police. Them not having trained the new Night Audit properly is not the guests' fault. I would demand compensation, and ask to talk directly to the Front Desk Manager, and if necessary, escalate to the Hotel Manager/General Manager. If booked through a third-party (like Bcom, which is universally hated by most hotel employees), I would also complain to them. After all, you come to a hotel to be able to SLEEP.
You should come to Belgium when Kaa Gent - Club Brugge is on. It's called the battle of Flanders. Ghent is a very beautiful city with a lot of history.
Dank u wel Sam voor dit! Loved visiting the Dutch grounds in the 80s when a certain Guus Hiddinct (former Chelsea manager) won PSV the European Cup (1988)! Hope they are a bit better then they were under recent/current Man Utd/Leicester manager,Ruud Van Nistlerooy!
I worked with a Dutch engineer from Eindhoven a few years ago and noticed he had a small light bulb tattoo on one hand. Your vlog confirms my assumption that this was a symbol of the football club.
Really cool and insightful video. Want to see all the aspects of football journeys, especially when hotels are not helpful or matches get stopped for disruption. It´s the ripples in lifes tapestry which make it interesting
Love the videos, I’m born and raised in Eindhoven (and still live here) and would like to clear something up, the name “city of light” does not come from Philips with the lightbulbs. Before Philips we had a lot of factory’s making matches. There are still some facades of the factory’s standing up near the canals.
Video is just as entertaining as any others you had done. These situation are definetly annoying but it still turned out as a decent watch and enjoyed it. Thanks for making this a series I love this kind of content the most .
Love it.. it makes the adventure things going wrong 😂. Good video, buddy 👍 Me and the boys have been going cheap football breaks for years. Nuremberg is a good little trip
We did a similar thing in Hungary earlier this year. Ended up in a town called Kecskemet and watched them win 3-1. Stayed in Budapest which is lovely. Liked it so much we're doing 2 games in 2025
Go to Vitesse Arnhem. Despite Vitesse are in a struggle but does have good history in Netherlands Most seasons in the Eredivisie until last year got relegated and maybe back to back relegate but Vitesse fans are still there great.
Brainport isn't that weird of a name when you realize Eindhoven is The Netherlands' high tech hub. ASML has offices here, and is headquartered just outside of Eindhoven. No other company in the world can produce the machines to produce high end chips at the moment. ASML spun off Phillips actually.
Hi there. If you're ever interested, you can come to Bucharest for a top flight match. Usually round-trip tickets from London are around 50 pounds, a bit more from Edinburgh ( I don't know if Glasgow still has direct flights), then around 5-7 pounds for the match ticket and accomodation is starting at 25-30 pounds/night at a decent hotel. You can even accomodate more matches in a weekend. I tried to write to you privately about it, but couldn't find any option of doing that😅. If you're ever interested, I can show you around, no strings attached of course.
Great video, I flew into Eindhoven for a few games in Holland the other week, went to Helmond, Sittard, Ajax and Aachen just over the border. Thankfully I stayed with a pal so no hotel dilemmas for me!
I’m an hotel night manager, they didn’t deal with the situation very well on the night. Has for compensation I think the hotel will offer you a free stay rather than refund your money
The weather certainly played havoc back here in the UK, i was meant to be going to the racing at Aintree, which was abandoned due to the winds, but rather than stay at home, i rerouted myself to Wigan v Leyton Orient instead and then yesterday went to see Man Utd Women thrash Liverpool 4-0. Always a shame when plan A goes belly up but I've always been one to make the best of whatever Ife throws at me
Bangkok calling,so I am heading back to the uk tonight via 2 nights in china ,2 nights back in the uk,then £50 Gatwick to Istanbul 2 nights on a food eating trip,£24 for 2 nights hotel,£60 Istanbul to Riyadh for the Tyson fury fight in Saudi Arabia,£75 for 3 nights in hotel, living the dream, the fight ticket was £165 I nearly forgot
Interesting vlog. I've family living in Den Haag and flew Ryanair into Eindhoven from Pafos Cyprus for not much more than you paid from Edinburgh. Then got a train up to Den Haag which was about the same as you paid for a much shorter journey. Perhaps cheaper to book in advance? My accommodation was also cheaper and quieter as it was with my daughter and her family. I did a week there for not much more than your two nights. Mind you Holland is bloody expensive isn't it. I love it there though. PS Our ex Ipswich Town manager Sir Bobby Robson was also PSV manager after he left England.

I suppose it wasn't very difficult to communicate with Dutch people, you can use English everywhere 😊 Eindhoven is an expensive city because it is the electronics technology hup of The Netherlands full of expats working for ASML the advanced chip machine producer. Just 138 euros for the two night stay in the hotel is a bargain in Eindhoven 😉
Love this whole shtick of "I can't believe you can Fly to this country for ££ when it costs more to go to this UK City angle" when the simple reason for it is the Fossil Fuel Industry and the Airlines get Major Subsidies and Tax Relief and have done for decades now so can offer cheap air travel as a result, it's nothing to do with it being 'amazing' compared to Train Travel across the UK for similar land mileage. Different industries different reasons, different histories, different priorities. (Plus Privatization didn't help one bit) and generally International Tourism and access and infrastucture has grown and been promoted more especially through social media advertising so companies try and get people places for a little money as possible as often as they can so the countries can benefit a lot from the tourism, which the UK has never super relied on over the years for it's economic growth. Got back to the late 80s and early 90s and it was a much different picture Travel was still a genuine adventure and if you did it on the cheap it wasn't by airplane it meant a lot of driving and camping and trying to spend as little as you could while there.
That's nonsense. Our ridiculous train prices absolutely play a part (which have nothing to do with the fossil fuel industry or air travel subsidies). You couldn't do this video in Germany for example because their train fares are much cheaper.
