I don't think I ever realized that the trumpet was a beautiful instrument until I heard Chris Botti play it. His playing "Emmanuel" with Lucia Macareli blew me away.
Having played the trumpet for 59 years, I am well aware of the complexities and difficulties one encounters when navigating the horn across different genre. Having followed many jazz, classical and studio Trumpeters over the years, I don't believe many players have the ability to Control the vast subtle nuances of the horn. When Chris improvises his sound and control are absolutely incredible. Most trumpet players play loud and louder; not Botti. He has the ability to bend and command the softest notes! He can play above high C softly with complete control and maintain the dynamic down below the staff. It is an extreme challenge just to get a sound like Botti in the middle register. I will say, no one is the greatest trumpet player in the world and to call out a name is subjective to say the least; however when it comes to sheer control and command Chris Botti is one of the best!!!
