@tokyeol We've conceded 1 more than Arsenal and 2 more than City, the top teams of the last couple of years. We need a bit of work, not a radical overhaul. It's not the drama people make it out to be. Top goalie would sort 90% of the issue.
I think playing James on the left back and wanting him to be the inverted left back will help him with his injuries as well. Less bombing forward etc. more controlled game playing the inverted full back. Also 3 game saving clearance. I think James is the captain if he can stay fit. Or else it will be Colwill.
Maresca’s demeanor comes from his upbringing in a fishing family. He has the matter of fact honesty of someone who has grit and graft in equal measure. His confidence and style are that of a man who has faced the sea and thus nothing phases him.
Man With clubs and players complaining about more games and more tournaments being introduced, which by the way from a fans perspective is more interesting but players seems to complain about more games Chelsea owners have seen this and counter attacked the situation by buying 40+ players everyone is ridiculing and literally have two good teams to perform in different games. I don't know what you think, but this for now looks genius, and if CFC can avoid injuries, get another no. 9 and improve defensive mistakes, they have a chance on being the successor once Man City domination comes to an end. This extreme business these American owners have Implemented show us exactly why they are billionaires. Risky business 😂
Sign Diogo Costa and they get leadership and a massive positional upgrade in one package. He's won everything in Portugal, 30 odd international caps, won multiple underage championships with Portugal. A bit of quality and leadership behind that defence would make a huge difference, and he still fits the club's age profile.
Bro I sign him very time on fifa, makes perfect sense, but still, only on fifa unfortunately. Every time I’ve watched Porto play this season he’s been poor.
As a Leicester fan, I enjoyed his football, but understood the criticism from some of our fans. Maresca’s Leicester had one of the best squads in championship history, so were able to dominate games the way he wants, meaning the majority of games we were camped outside the oppositions box, struggling to break down a low block. At Chelsea, prem teams are having a go at them, leaving open spaces for Chelsea’s talent to thrive in. I think as chelsea develop there will be more games like we saw at Leicester last season, which is where you might see the grumbles start to rise, especially if they don’t continue to win
James can be a good captain if he stays fit and playing. If his body keeps breaking down though, for me the only real alternative is Colwill as he’s probably the only regular starter with captaincy potential. Otherwise, Lavia if he can stay fit or maybe even Cucurella.
Chelsea pushed City hard in the opening game and have played pretty well so far. 2nd strongest squad in the league after City. First eleven is close to the level of arsenal and Liverpool. Mainly the goalkeeper position is poor.
Need leaders in the back. Defending is definitely where Chelsea need a proper leader. Reece leads more by example, but that doesn't help when Sanchez makes the odd error and their defensive set pieces are terrible
Love you Liam Twomey, However you have got to do better than phoning it in from your car next to a motorway or traffic. The Athletic can spring for a washroom somewhere, no? Professional standards and all for us TH-cam commoners, thank you.
Leaders - Multiple types in a squad. Captain and vice captain is a start. No Gallagher or Chilwell and James has an injury history. Tried Fernández who is relegated to the B team. Caicedo had the arm band. Rumors about Cucurella, Colwill and Adarabioyo. Most consistent big game player - Palmer. Goals, assists, wow moments. Followed by the likes of Caicedo, Madueke, Jackson, Nkunku, Lavia. Discipline - Major issue - lots of yellow, 3 sets of fines for 6 yellows per game. More based on ill discipline and arguing with the refs. Partnerships - CB's is still dubious with Fofana/Adarabioyo and Colwill but developing. RB ???? about James' ongoing fitness and endurance Vs Gusto, who has not been as resplendent as last year. LB is being sorted out, Cucurella for now, but has liabilities. Veiga shows more composure. James and Gusto in cameo roles. The dream pairing of Caicedo and Fernández has not materialized yet. Multiple experiments with Lavia, inverted backs, 6/7/8/10. Holding mids are a work in progress. For now Lavia and Caicedo is promising. Both attacking wings are open as Mudryk, Madueke, Sancho, Felix, Palmer all duke it out. Seems Maresca prefers Palmer as the 10. Strikers is a developing role for Jackson, Nkunku and Guiu. Jackson starts, Nkunku preferred on the B team, Guiu plays when given an opportunity. Goalkeeping is still a mess. Chelsea now has more structure. Potential starters are getting recognized. Maresca is in a position to pick his most consistent 11 and develop a spine.
Reece is 'captain' but it's hard to lead from the physio room, which is why we've seemed a little leaderless the last couple years. Thiago Silva filled that void a little, as did Conor Gallagher, but they're both gone now.
I think Reece could be a good leader, I think he’s just not doing it right now. He’s probably low on confidence given his injuries the past few years. Let’s give it some time
I like that Maresca is willing to use the stick as well as the carrot. He's clearly profiled the players and is looking to get a response from each of them.
Recee personality I said from before the captaincy was available he’s too relax and laid back you need to drive your team mates as a leader and captain far too often players don’t carry they work load bc the captain is too relax and just 1 of the boys
Is this topic the most appropriate one that could have been discussed about Chelsea considering their recent good form and some of the player performances? Seems that whenever the Athletic discuss Chelsea, it’s with a kind of negative slant even when the club is doing well. Liam please do a better job of defending the club or reading where the interviewer is trying to go with their line of passive negative questions and deflect them
Besides the captain’s told on the pitch you need three sub- leaders on the field of play: a leader to control the defence; another one to control the midfield and the other to control the attack, and in all this has to coordinate with all these leaders and that is where Chelsea falters
Not even a Chelsea fan, but stick the armband on Palmer. Has been the player to drag the mad sack of badgers along, is properly one of the best players in the team and seems to thrive with the responsibility. Reece James might have some leadership about him but is built like Ledley King, needs to focus on his own personal welfare and be fit.
Nah man, Palmer is like Hazard, a star but no captain, a captain needs to be a workhorse and needs to have the biggest focus: Gallagher for example last year was a great captain. That's why i'd give it to Colwill or Caicedo, Palmer is like the last player i'd make captain
