The road were the group got pulled over has very little traffic. It was a back road and it was probably around 7 in the evening. The cop thought he was going to inform yall on how to be safe like everyone is a child. You don't have to ride single file and no one should have said that they would because it's less safe when cars are passing. Most motorist have no idea and in this case the cop didn't either. We deal with ignorant people all the time in the Senoia area but its still a great place to ride. If you live anywhere in the area the Senoia Tuesday ride is a must. Not just for the faster cyclist, there are 4 groups for riders with different levels of ability and experience.

The smart thing is to just say "yessir" to the cop and let him talk while nodding your head. Then after he disappears you go back to what you were doing out there. Trying to "discuss" rules of the road at that time is a waste because it resolves nothing and the cop gets PO'd at you. Nobody needs that.

In most states (I believe all), you are allowed to ride two abreast like motorcycles. Recording the officers pulling you over & then a polite letter to his supervisors regarding location, time of day, minimal traffic, healthy lifestyle activity & legal activity that he interrupted without him receiving a request/complaint (if that in fact was the case) is very effective & educational for that type of officer.
Personally (as a passionate, fastish paced old dude cyclist) I do not appreciate the groups that run stop signs & lights when other motorists are present. A single Mom working two jobs trying to make ends meet & running late to get her Son to practice on time...& 20 riders staring at her with an "Ya, I'm rudely running this intersection, what are you gonna do about it" look ??
C'mon guys, gives us a bad rep.

Actually, in most states you can ride 2 abreast, BUT you have to stay as close as is safe to the right side of the roadway. I ride in group rides like this and when the blood gets flowing, following the law is usually forgotten. This has created a lot of friction between motorists and cyclists. Common sense needs to prevail, or you will get heavily enforced by law enforcement. But no, the cop wasn't completely wrong.

    • @standingbear998

that is actually what the laws are. they are supposed to obey all traffic laws that cars do, and that does not include side by side driving. how much traffic is on a road does not make people immune to laws.having to pass big groups and side by side is more dangerous.

I was an LAPD Cop, who used to follow Group rides to provide them with safety, while I had them take the whole lane…. In CA cyclists can take a lane…. I would also shut down an intersection, and allow the entire group to remain together (sometimes hundreds of cyclists)….. Those was for, in my professional opinion, the safety of the cyclists, and to allow them to get through lights where half the pack got through, then halfway through the pack rolling, the light turned red,….. Public safety and true community Policing…..Velo Club La Grange and Big Orange in LA and South Bay know!…… NO Officer out in the less busy country roads should be sweating cyclists for bs…….. Provide some “Community Policing”…..NOT cite people on bikes trying to enjoy themselves and stay in shape. Police Officers have the ability to use the letter of the law for egregious and legitimately unsafe driving, or….the spirit of the law. Common sense should be applied!
Watching this video , I would have allowed the pace line to continue, and provided them a a little added safety while following. A few minutes of slower driving on a back road isn’t to much to ask of drivers. IMHO

I had a cop pull me over once to tell me I was impeding traffic. I was on a country road with very few cars. I asked him where he thought I should ride, in the ditch? I informed him that a bicycle is a vehicle and, unless the road is otherwise marked, I can use the whole lane if I want. I then had to inform him that faster moving vehicles have to slow down and pass me when it's safe to do so. Anyhow, he had no answer for any of it, he was just a moron who didn't know the laws he's supposed to enforce. I have nothing against cops, but I can't stand stupid people.

I live/ride in Alabama & Mississippi, and you're 100% right. The attitude down here is very anti-cyclist; it's often viewed as a "sissy sport" or "kids sport." I've had one guy tell me, "If man was meant to ride a bicycle, why did he invent a motor?" This guy is an avid deer hunter, so of course, we could apply his logic to hunting: if man was meant to use a bow for hunting, why did he invent the rifle?
But as you say, the most common view - particularly from needle-d**ks in big lumbering trucks - is that they own the road and I should get out their way. Even the cops here are so unfamiliar with the traffic laws that they're unaware that bicycles are legal vehicles.

In Boulder and Denver and in the mountains even we've had police officers mostly the CSP give us hard times consistently over the years. They've pretty much broken down big group rides unless they have an official event that has been signed off on. Sadly this is still going on today. I had something similar happen when I got pulled over. The biggest problem in America (both with cops and motorists) is that neither are taught that bicycles are street legal vehicles, so per traffic codes they are to be treated as such. The cop that stopped me literally said, _"I can't have you riding out here on the streets because you're going to get hit."_ I told him bikes were street legal vehicles and we parted ways. Also, contrary to what motorists WANT us to do - it is ILLEGAL to ride a bicycle on sidewalks (though I wouldn't want to ride my road bike there anyway).

Physically, yes. Lawfully? No. Plenty of cases where cyclists have been hit and the motorist has lost their ass in lawsuits.
According to the law, if you hit a cyclist (and they weren't running a red light, stop sign, etc), then the court is going to interpret that no differently than if you'd hit a CAR.
Bicycles are legal vehicles, you hit another vehicle. So while you may feel dominant because your "vehicle" is bigger, it's still involuntary manslaughter.

2 things: 1. I have never heard of a cop pulling over cyclists for riding in a double pace line. I never ride as far to the right as possible, because it invites cars to pass me unsafely. I ride where the right side tires of cars would be, and this pretty much forces cars to change lanes to pass. Also, double pace lines make the group smaller and takes less time for cars to pass. That whole thing just bothers me. That cop needs to enforce unsafe passing of cars and not hassle people out getting healthy and not bothering anyone.
And number 2, if it's within your budget, an Insta 360 mounted below your Garmin would make for some great videos and you wouldn't have to hold anything in your mouth. Plus, we would be able to see in front of and behind you. Just a thought. Be safe and watch out for uncool cops.

Real irony here, back in the 1880's,and 1890's,the League of American Wheelman, were pushing for paving roads! And the other outfits, for paving roads, were the Streetcar companies, and prior horse car operators, who were required by franchise to pave their right-of-ways,which didn't benefit the transit passengers at all! Bit of overlooked history, and there was a book on Alanta's transit put out by Interurbans Press, might be useful! Thank you for the forum! Thank you 😇 😊!

More than two, and the lines disintegrate to a bunch, which carries its own dangers, but single file is not recommended.

I got stopped by a USAF Security Police back in the 80's. I was in uniform, riding home from work. I was so happy at the thought of getting a speeding ticket on my bike. SP walks up to my bike and asked me, Do you know why I pulled you over? I tolded him, very honestly, I have no idea why you pulled over. He said, you were going too fast. I literally laughed and pointed out the speed limit was 40 and I was probably riding around 20mph. He says, well it looked like you were going too fast. I said, on this bike, in this uniform, with these scrawny legs that is virtually impossible! He then says, well you should probably have a light on you bike. I asked, is there a "probably" law that states that? He finally gave up and walked back to his cruiser. He proceeded to follow me all the way to the main gate until I exited the base. Moral of the story, cops might be trying to do the right thing but don't always handle the situation the right way.

The law (at least here in CA) stipulates cyclists must ride as far to the right as they can. Which implies "safley can" as saftey is always implied with laws. Technically a cop could pull over a cyclist for taking the middle of a lane if there wasnt a reason for it.
On 2 lane roads, motor vehicles are allowed to cross a broken yellow into oncoming traffic in order to pass. Im sure it feels a bit mad max, but it is legal.
There is no law in California requiring riders to ride single file. If a bike needs to pass another it may freely do so in the road.
I dont know what the cop in this video is talking about with single file, sounds like BS. But he does have them riding too far from the right without reason. Which is reason enough for the cyclists to try and appeal to the officers good side. If he wants he can take his time writing tickets.

@@brandonhoffman4712 *_On 2 lane roads, motor vehicles are allowed to cross a broken yellow into oncoming traffic in order to pass. Im sure it feels a bit mad max, but it is legal._*
Yes, it's legal because bicycles are considered legal vehicles, so they are to be treated as such. All traffic laws that apply to cars also apply to bikes...though here in Alabama where the roads are twisty & hilly, people pass me on double yellows all the time. I honestly don't mind as long as they slow down and move over at least 3 feet; most people will take the entire oncoming lane to be safe...while others are just dicks and don't move over at all.
I usually ride solo, so I stick to the far right for the most part except on rapid descents where I'm tucked into the aero position; the bike gets a little wobbly around 35 MPH so I move into the middle of my lane to allow a little extra breathing room to my right.

    • @brandonhoffman4712
      @brandonhoffman4712 หลายเดือนก่อน

@sixstanger00 here's googles AI overview for you. I see nothing stating crossing double yellow lines is okay.
California has several laws that apply to cyclists, including those that require them to follow traffic rules, and those that give them rights on the road:
      Traffic rules
Bicyclists must follow the same traffic rules as other vehicles, including stopping at stop signs and red lights, signaling when turning, and riding in the same direction as traffic. They must also yield the right of way to drivers at intersections and driveways, and allow drivers to cross in marked crosswalks. However, in many situations, bicyclists have the right of way over drivers.
      Riding on the road
Bicyclists can ride in the traffic lane if they're going as fast as traffic, but if they're going slower, they should ride as close to the right curb as possible. They can also ride two abreast when riding with traffic, but some say they can also ride two abreast when they can't keep up and have to ride to the right.
      Passing
Bicyclists should exercise caution when passing vehicles that are stopped or going in the same direction. Motorists must pass bicyclists at a distance of at least three feet and not interfere with their safe operation.
      Helmets
Minors under 18 are required to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). While adults aren't required to wear helmets, they are strongly encouraged to do so, especially on roads with few bike lanes.
      Bike lanes
Motor vehicles are not allowed to drive in designated bike lanes, which are marked by solid white lines, signage, and pavement markings. The purpose of this law is to protect cyclists by giving them a separate space on the road.

If y'all are in a single file line, it will cause a car to have to be in oncoming traffic lane twice as long as if you were double file (a single line of 20 riders is twice as long as 2 lines of 10). Georgia State law says that drivers are to give cyclists 3 feet and a cyclist is entitled to the entire lane. It took me 5 minutes look it up. It ended up with a crash that has resulted in over a million dollars in legal settlements and retraining of the entire force on how to properly stop bicycles. There's a right way and a wrong way to do things. Yes, if you violate the law, you can be cited. Pulling over the entire group fir an education event might look goid on the surface, but it might not end that way. Police need to be mindful there are people in charge and that's who they need to speak to when there's a problem with a riding group.

But on double yellow lines there's no point you may as well fill the lane as long as you give way to traffic behind you and pull off to let them pass. In my country only a few states have good laws on that, in several big mining states if you block traffic BEHIND you you get a ticket for obstructing traffic, so you can't just be a road hog and waste everyones life away being a slow obstruction.

I only move into the center of my lane on super quick descents where I'm tucked into the aero position; I need the extra space on both sides of the bike at that speed in case things get hairy.
On large group events, cyclists can take the full lane (though they usually ride single-file once out of urban areas). But taking the full lane isn't illegal. Annoying for motorists? Perhaps. Georgia law permits cycling 2 abreast, on an equal status to the requirement to stay right - i.e. 2 riders can ride 2 abreast and /collectively/ stay to the right. Further, the requirement to stay to right is as near as is "practicable" and there is a specific exception for when "The lane is too narrow to share safely with a motor vehicle". Now, there is a requirement for vehicles to give at least 3 feet of space when passing, so if there isn't 3 feet of room over, then you can cycle where you want - this is basically the "Take the lane" / "take primary" rule of safe cycling writ into law. Given 2 abreast is permitted too, that means a pair of riders can take the whole lane on all but the widest lanes I think (but check with a lawyer).
Have a look at Phil Gaimon's recent video with pretty much the exact same issue with a cop. Seems like CA's laws are very similar to GAs.

You're both wrong... The cop & you the riders.. Legally on roads in the US, we are allowed to travel on up to half of the lane especially when the right/ outside of the white line is either full of debris or dangerous condition of pavement thus causing potential flats or crashes. If the road is two lanes in each direction than & only than can the riders use the entire lane since there's a second lane for overtaking car traffic. Single file only ? Nope... Inside half of the traveling lane its two rotating lines one moving up where the lead rider takes a very short pull then pulls off into the line moving backwards. The line moving backwards is the one into the wind so the riders rotating in the pace line are sheltered until they hit the front for their short turn @ the front. When you hit the front you immediately pull off.. This is what & how a rotating pace line works. It does not command the entire lane which forces overtaking cars from going way out into the oncoming traffic lane..... From the video footage, you guys ride all over the place, on the double yellow, over it & fully take up the entire half of the road.... You cannot do that & is why the cop pulled ya'll over. He was correct in doing so but isn't correct in the single file demand. Additionally when your riding group is so big, you need to split it up into no more than 20 riders & group rides becoming unsanctioned racing on public roads is going to get drivers in cars pissed off. Find a commercial corporate development where you could race on Sundays when no one is working. On open public roads, you guys are asking for trouble from law enforcement. Over 20 becomes too chaotic unless you're in a controlled USA Cycling sanctioned controlled event.. Ride Safe & Smartly..

How strange some people are and how tyrannical some cops can be. By law, we are considered vehicles. We are subject to the rules of the road. But we are not allowed to use the road? I am from Canada and i cycle all year long.. indoors in the winter and outdoors in the late spring, summer and early fall. When I was young i got nabbed by the Gestapo for being on the wrong side of the road. He was very nice to me and explained that as vehicle I had to obey the traffic laws. He told me to keep to the right as much as possible, but if I had to, I could use any part of the road that I needed to.

I doubt there is any law in your state that says bike riders must ride in a single file on public roads. However, it's just simply a good courtesy not to impede traffic. I've been riding the highways and byways in Texas for over 40 years and most, not all, groups of cyclists quickly move to single file if and when a motorized vehicle comes up behind the group. Some car drivers still get upset but most don't.

Literally just watched Phil Gaimon talk about this exact same situation where he got stopped by a cop for not riding single file.... which is not illegal in california. The irony is that overtaking a bunch of riders in single file is actually actually harder to do safely than a compact peloton. Is it the law to ride in a single file in your state?

@@beelzebozo1 this was my first time ever experiencing this. I need to read up on the specifics but in the city we never have this problem at all. But Senoia police department and the bike shop are working together for a better solution.

What's the law in Georgia regarding bicycles on the road?

      Someone shared this earlier
*GA Code 40-6-294 (c) - Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, or when a special event permit issued by a local governing authority permits riding more than two abreast.
But of course if someone had challenged him on that they'd have wound up in that back of that cruiser
