At 14:44, "Everybody is psyched about Qumran because they've heard of where the DSS were found, & then you get there & this is it. ... It takes like 5 minutes for a normal person to kind of appreciate this & then you go home." 😂
😅 Dr. Magness is a hoot, and I'd have to say from personal experience she's not wrong. Unless you're an archaeology enthusiast it is unimpressive, especially after visiting Masada and other sites further north. But there is much to learn from the site!
Seems Qumran starts just after elephantine island Jews are arriving after getting run out of Egypt. Possible connection I would think. They get to Jerusalem and spend a couple generations trying to get along, but can’t , then decide that the Jerusalem temple priests are not pure enough but they “are”. It’s just a thought.
Always a pleasure to learn more from prof Jodi Magness!
Great content as always! Can't believe we're basically just a month away from the next 2024 Archeology Discovery Weekend! So looking forward to it.
@21:00, rooms can't have multiple uses?
"It must this be this and only this kind of room!"

@27:30, and there were at the same time religious animal sacrifices at Gerazim, no?
