I love a good Harry Houdini rant on a Sunday morning. I don't know if it is a thing in Australia, but in the UK there's a brand of frozen food called Bird's Eye, which has been fronted for decades by the character Captain Birdseye. Obviously, as it has been going so long, the role has been recast a few times, but the captain is usually an older gent, with a full white beard. So, in most parts of Britain, I think you are as likely to be called "Captain" or "Captain Birdseye" as you are, "Father Christmas". Two weeks ago (or was it three) I was at the IPMS show in Telford, UK. As well as some outstanding models there were one or two that were, perhaps, less well done. I think that's great, it shows that you don't have to produce some flawless, museum-standard masterpiece to have a model that you want to show the world. I would never be so crass as to say that the paint finish might be a bit off, or some pieces are on wonky. I'm sure that they know. And, for all I know, it could have been someone's first model. Or produced by someone with limited eyesight, dexterity or even money. A novice modeller, looking at all the masterpieces, might be forgiven for giving up. Seeing something more at their level, is a reminder that (with maybe a few exceptions) anyone's first attempt at anything is likely to be their worst attempt. Don't ever discourage someone who is just starting out, and don't ever feel bad if your first model isn't as good as someone else's hundredth. I also harbour a suspicion that a lot of rivet counters have never applied glue and paint to plastic. Anyway, Harry, stop whinging. I thought that was something that only us poms did. It's time to get back to modelling. Thanks, again for the entertainment.
I just realised I have no knowledge of all these new stars of music… basically I just listen to iTunes tracks from the 60’s and 70’s these days. Yep I am a dinosaur now.
My god Harry, thank you buddy, that needed saying! In these days of "woke or broke" I remain so wishing we could go back to the old days. I was born in 61 and grew up as a baby boomer, here in the UK woke is just as bloody bad and people just can't take jokes anymore, you can't say this or that without fear of reprisals. I am sure it will end, but as a dinosaur myself it maybe just too late. But thanks again Harry, let's end wokism!
Buttons done. I absolutly love your videos. I do maintenance work on a local hospital and i had to change a lock . I asked the staff if it was ok to go in to the rapey room. They went silent and stared at me. I realised the error of my ways instantly and calmly repeated "Is Therapey room 1 free". Phew, a close call, I could be sacked for a crack like that these days.
I can relate! Bought the DVD of Bugsy Malone from my local retailer, girl behind the counter was a Christmas temp, fresh out of school. Told her what I thought of the movie and she looked at me like I was from Mars! One of the songs is featured in a Christmas ad for a well known supermarket, she hadn't seen that either! Probably hasn't even got a TV! Used to frequent 1/6 figure forums and one of the figures they all loved doing was Indiana Jones. Whenever I'd present them with mine, all I'd get was "Why didn't you use so and so's head/belt/hat/whatever!?". If I'd done that it would look like THEIR figures, I want mine to be MINE! That's the whole point of being custom, if you use what everyone else does, then it's almost a production piece!
Great video, Harry! I'm with you, as I'm a boomer too. To my eyes, it seems that people are just overly sensitive these days. I think it all started with the, "everybody gets a trophy" generation. Humor has left Western society, because the media spews it's sensitivity BS. The world will pass me by. I'm just happy to be in my workshop building my models to my own satisfaction.
Totally agree Harry, I got sick out it I have come off Facebook it was not fun anymore. But I do enjoy your posts. Keep up the great work. You always cheer me up. 🎅🎅🎅
I am right with you on these points. First off, my closest friend is a follower of Jainism. She is unable to display the flag in public. My personal experience relates to being paired with a young lady for a work project. Noting our different backgrounds, experiences and ages, I commented; "My, what strange bedfellows we will make". Oh dear, I found myself being referred for Counselling, until someone saw reason. Do they not teach English in schools anymore? We live in a bizarre world. The young lady was subsequently dismissed for making similar false accusations against male colleagues. Stick with it old boy. Illegitimi non carborundum.
I am going to put the rigging you printed off for my Airfix Bounty as soon as the school holidays start. When done, I will be making a start on the Airfix 'Discovery' of Antarctic fame. Keep up the good work - nil carborundum 😊
Hello there mate greetings from the UK . I am in full agreement with you i am also a dinosaur 🦕 just like yourself your videos always put a smile on my face so keep them coming as always happy modelling everyone 👍
Marvelous mini rants made my day, yet again 08D On a side note. Oddly enough "Zé Cross" is not illegal in Denmark nor Poland. Maybe frowned upon in public but not when displayed in context e.g. a model at a fair or model shop.
I may have mentioned this here before, but it was the funniest(saddest) thing I have ever seen at model meetings. There were these two guys who very nearly started WW3 with a take no prisoners argument over the "correct" colour scheme for a Klingon Bird of Prey. Hilarious! "the Klingons would never use that shade of red" etc. Absolute nonsense.
G'Day Harry👍 Brilliant episode ; and I agree with you 110%, I AM !! an x-gen born in 1968 but was raised under my grand parents roof ( they were born 1909 & 1911 ) & I use many of their & their generations expressions and lingo; & "Gawd-Struth" ( Gods Truth for those who need a translation ) do I cop some serious Shite for it. Keep on doing what you want to do & being what you wanna be & building/modeling what you wanna model N build (insert the classic song by 'The Masters Apprentices" here). P.s. the nay say-errs & Rivet Recording Ratbags. Can all go have: Forced Un-law-full Carnal Knowledge with themselves !!! & now I think I need to go watch this episode of your show again cos you make a LOT of vert good & extremely valid points + I need to have another great giggle. We who are about to (model-make) die salute you. Captain my Captain !! 😄🤩😇🤪 🥳😎
I still use tube cement, Humbrol enamels and pressure cans for my airbrush that I've had for 50 years. Built my first models at age 6 in 1966...Aurora Batmobile, Aurora Huey. Talk about dinosaurs, eh? No acrylic paints, Tamiya cement or fancy compressors like the "experts" say I need to have. I have the same problem with "inappropriate" jokes. I tell a story that I had a girl in my car that asked why I had plastic sheeting, zip ties and duct tape in my car...told her it was for little girls that asked too many questions. Now people think I'm an ax murderer because of a joke. Get real....
It has all got out of proportion and control. I can see the need for better treatment of children and ethnicity but fear this offence over reaction to every thing is getting absurd. Eventually the pendulum will swing into a more balanced and sane equilibrium, sadly I may not live to see that.
So piece of trivia about that salute. It was also the Olympic salute until the 1948 games. As the countries marched past the review area they would droop the flag and give that salute lol

Finland have used a blue coloured swaztikka as the national symbol on their air force aircraft for decades. But even they are now swapping it out for a simple white-blue-white roundel....

There is a law in Germany where they cannot have the swastika displayed or sold, so I understand if you import into Germany you have to obey their law. However why should the rest of the world suffer for their regret and chagrin.
@HarryHoudiniModels my piont exactly....why should the rest of the world have to be pc about it just so the Germans dont get offended......they bloody well started it.
Mate.. Can't argue with anything you said . But what really fks me off is, everyone gets their knickers in a twist over a couple of emblems that the nasty's used. But No one says a thing about BMW, VW MAN Porsche Mercedes-Benz, and the list goes on, which were all part of the Nasty war machine. Sweeping these emblems under the carpet wont make the past disappear and certainly wont stop it happening again just look at us in the UK. Look at the Lunatic we've been lumbered with. Yet the younger generation needs to know what they were about how the world in affect United to stop the tyranny. I also often find myself saying things where a room goes deadly silent, where before people would be falling over laughing. Thank Darwin we have a hobby where we can shut ourselves away from these poor soals.
..and the La’Merrycan space program… Old Vener wasn’t a saint. This is the thing. They choose when they will be tolerant, if it suits their agenda, then go all broke over stupid stuff. There is a theory that if you make a nation focus on the trivial, then they are easily manipulated and can be conquered.
Gday Harry. Haha, absolutely loved your rant. Just for fun (with my staff) we watched you first with Korean subtitles, then Auto-translate. Some words didn't make the screen, so i told what you were saying. The girls lost it when the "Pen-is panties pocket" came up. Auto translate kept repeating but in English, -nearly dropped my mug of coppee... Pants, trousers are known here as panties, things in them usually written as they are. YOUR NOT an old dinosaur, the young ones are too self-centered to get their faces off the phones and laptops and look at the real world. It was a shock to learn how many of the young people in Oz had never heard of our favourite music bands of the 60s and 70s, having to show they film clips on the mobile phone was a pain ! The Korean younger generation are up there with what is history, no hang ups there. Chan, 🇰🇷🇦🇺.
I've got no problem with swat-stickers on models for historical accuracy. In fact I get irritated when they are left out of the kits. The Finns, for instance, were using it from the first days of their air force in the 1910s. Well before the nasties came along. Good rand Harry. All the best matey.
Godzilla was my first model I built in 1966, I used Q tips for paint brushes. I built lots and lots of glue bombs in my time. Instead of yelling at the clouds try whispering, the neighbors stopped calling the police on me after that.
At least your modelling skills have improved in 60 years Harry. Mine, sadly have not in 55 years. Well guess I'm consistent. Main thing is I still enjoy it. P.S. when are you getting the 'Junk' out for some Houdini Magic?.
I gave up to get to University and then a professional career and restarted in my late 40s as a thing to occupy my mind and hands. At that age, i didnt really have any inclination to learn more or get a lot better as i was “learned-out” and just wanted to relax. When i retire, and if im in good shape, maybe i’ll have time to learn more. Or perhaps not.
I do keep looking at my “Junk” and maybe once I get the Warspite, Seydlitz, and St Louis completed early next year, I might just fondle my “Junk” kit as a quick fun project.
That’s the miserable woke world we live in today where IQs, general knowledge, good ol’ common sense and a sense of humour are becoming extinct - or worse, treated with disdain - Harry. If that is the future of this planet, I’m glad I am a dinosaur. I hope to make the most of my twilight years with other like-minded dinosaurs until I shuffle off this mortal coil. Keep on doing what you’re doing, mate. 💪🏻🙂
All depends how you think of and celebrate Crispness… for me it is the Solstice and festival of Saturnalia, or even Festivus for the rest of us. So Die Hard is a perfect fit. Yappy Pie Face Muddy Plucker!
I have reading glasses, TV glasses, cooking glasses, driving glasses, computer monitor glasses, and my modelling glasses. Am I making a spectacle of myself?
I'm a 1st Gen Millenial, 1981 kid, and I feel old and outdated. I never want to go to hobby shows because those showboat kits were hard labor, not fun. Plus, you leave with a bigger inferiority complex than you had before. Fokker the rivet counters. Modeling should be fun, not an unpaid drudge job.
So long as the guys who do superdetail enjoy what they’re doing its fine. I’m impresses and inspired to do a little better and and i try to learn as few new techniques along the way, but i dont seek to emulate them. My kits take long enough as it is.
Max from his maxsmodels channel says "Make it as you want it to be". Bright pink with blue spots and QANTAS 'Roos? No problem. Throw it together or spend years on it, your choice. Either way, be happy with it.
Thanks Harry. I built my first kit 70 years ago. I recently encountered a group that won't accept your work if you haven't done the panel lines properly. Fokker them and Fokker that.
There is always someone better than you, but also someone with less skills than you. In everything. So never be put off by either. Just be happy where you are.
Morning Harry of that age 67 retried going for walks around London to keep active and building the models nice one with the multi-pass great film, you can fine that symbol on Finnish tanks of WW2 and you can't say any think these days with out some snow fake being offended or you getting arrested any how back to my Tamiya pink panther its a old kit but i love Land rovers thanks for video and have a great day
It is also the reason I don’t bother entering modelling competitions anymore. You are at the whim of their bias, not judged on your model making skills. As I said in my “How to win model comps” video where I proved “the little red airplane always wins”.
@HarryHoudiniModels exactly..if i want to strap 2 jet engines on to a submarine and calk it the "Bat Boat" then i will......screw the snobs and perfecionts....let them have their melt down
Sweet Jebus. Don't sing that one Oingo Boingo song, they'll lynch you. Hard to believe Danny Elfman went from New Wave to orchestral soundtracks just because Tim Burton was his best friend...
Harry, Harry, Harry...... well said! Thank you for speaking common-sense! Oh wait, does that still exist? Lol How come no one talks about Finlands blue version of the swa57ika, that was used before and a longtime after Germany did. Why doesnt anyone who models Japanese items get the same criticism? They were far from gentleman like. Irrespective, history cannot be changed, but we can learn. Keep up the truth telling!
My local PO is in a small town run by a family. So it still has a friendly chatty atmosphere and I know everyone by name. I can’t get mail delivered to my rural address, but when I walk into the PO they have already seen me park outside and get out my post and packages ready to collect. Nicest Post Office I have ever experienced.
Thanks Harry, sadly it is true, we need to be politically correct or we get funny looks. You mentioned resin and floaties? What do take for there removal?
I packed up the resin printer and moved to filament. The drops help a bit as well as going out into sunshine without sunglasses for a short while. The sunlight seems to help dissipate them.
l knew the world was going to hell in a hand basket when model companies brought in photo esch , half a dozen parts to build when in the past a couple would have sufficed , individual track links with horror of horrors individual teeth to be mount ed on them to ! (thanks a bunch Dragon ) and after market parts costing a fortune , resin parts and so on and so on . Me l live in the past with my old fashioned perspective of how un complicated building a model used to be . ( You opened the box , followed the instructions , assembled it and painted the bugger ......end of story .Yes like the times in general the World (even the modelling World ) has left this sad old fart behind. Excuse me while l go back to building my old Matchbox kit .
Wait, wait wait, you're Australian ? why didn't someone tell me :)), I knew you lot are weird but never knew you kept your pen in your pocket, only joking. The thing with the nazi symbol is it's when it's in a white circle on a red background that's actually banned, not the symbol itself, as, because in what you say is true, it's an old religious symbol and can't be banned, but unfortunately it has only one meaning to most people, same with the salute. I built my first model in 1967, so I'm about your old age Harry, I build race cars and bikes and since the early 80's cigertte branding decals have been omitted and I've had to use aftermarket ones, so flippin annoying, would love to see the figures collected on how many children building models, when I did, started smoking JPS or whatever because of models :). keep wif the fun and jokes Harry and don't let the rivet counter fokkers get at ya, model on
Actually here in Australia, yes that is a real place, the swastika is banned in all forms because the Neo Nasties paint it as graffiti non canted in thin lines.
Sick of all the bollocks about what you can say and not say,I upset lorry drivers at my foundry some years ago by wearing a ww2 german helmet as a safety helmet and once upset a junior school teacher by saying I know iv disaplined my daughter when the palm of my hand hurts....
It is so sad… I haven’t worked in an office with all this BS for 20 years, having my own contract business from home. I doubt I would survive 10 mins in the modern HR driven workplace.
@Harry Houdini: Models, DEI, and “woke” are completely different things. I check into and support you as a great model builder. These other topics are far off topic and frankly have nothing to do with the choice to ban swastikas and accuracy issues in modeling. Please reconsider including such topics in this forum.
This video was about me being a dinosaur Anthony. No politics were mentioned or even the word “W0ke” I said “broke”. As far as DEI goes I was very clear. I am all for it, as long as people are appointed on merit not a quota system. That is just common sense. And yes DEI and “W0ke” have everything to do with the nannybots and crazy attitude in social media of late where people put, “in my opinion” incorrectly in charge of regulation have overstepped the bounds of common sense.
I'm a moderator on a very large Facebook group. The Nazis symbols are illegal to display in a number of countries and Facebook among others doesn't want to be prosecuted. The group is being promoted by FB now and has tons of members, so it's the way it is
True… but context. If it is a historical representation such as a model from the period that that should not be offensive. Most of the ban rules are about deliberately displaying in public. Common sense should prevail.
@wixy500 that scene has so much pathos.. you know Allan Rickman didn’t know they were going to let the harness go and drop him a little to get the shot? So the shock on his face is not acting.
Mate, your jokes are simply tired and unfunny. As for the ‘forbidden symbol’, it was forbidden from kits, it’s because it is illegal in European countries where the genocide took place and are genuinely at risk from far right groups. You’re older than me, but not by too much. We have to get used to growing into irrelevancy.
Oddly enough, it's not illegal in Denmark nor Poland. Maybe frowned upon in public but not when displayed in context e.g. a model at a fair or model shop.

Chan, 🇰🇷🇦🇺.
Great to hear your younger generation are more in tune (pun intended).
@HarryHoudiniModels PUN ACCEPTED, LOL. My K-pop daughters love all my Status Quo records, first Quo then K-pop gets played, 🤣😂🤣.
What Ever You Want, Down Down, Rocking all over the World! I used to play their tunes in my teenage rock band. Had very long hair then!
Cheers to your modeling tool sales. Humans are toolmakers at heart, despite most hoomans being service sector wage slaves or cubicle monkeys.
I do enjoy crafting new tools… must be the caveman in me… see! I am a dinosaur!
I've got no problem with swat-stickers on models for historical accuracy. In fact I get irritated when they are left out of the kits. The Finns, for instance, were using it from the first days of their air force in the 1910s. Well before the nasties came along. Good rand Harry. All the best matey.
It is a sad state of affairs when we try to cancel the past, rather than learn from it.
Cocaine eyedrops are legal in a lot of the Pacific Rim. I learned that from a job steward who did time in Okinawa as a Marine.
oooh maybe that is where my optometrist gets them from… I am hooked!
Godzilla was my first model I built in 1966, I used Q tips for paint brushes. I built lots and lots of glue bombs in my time.
Instead of yelling at the clouds try whispering, the neighbors stopped calling the police on me after that.
I just mumble incessantly all day and talk to the cat… which apparently is not a good look in public!
Don't worry. HH's accents are not as bad as they sound.
LOL… I should have just done the Allo Allo “Gud Moaning” for the French intro hehe
At least your modelling skills have improved in 60 years Harry. Mine, sadly have not in 55 years. Well guess I'm consistent. Main thing is I still enjoy it. P.S. when are you getting the 'Junk' out for some Houdini Magic?.
You really shouldn't be asking a bloke to get his junk out on TH-cam. That's just not right.
I will… its the only thing I can do :)
@ 🤗
German Feldgrau is a spectrum from bluish to greenish.
and every colour inbetween.
Spot on about the Roman Centurion salute being coopted by total yarbos.
Hail Ceaser!
Just remember, the young kids today would find Benny Hill offensive...
They do! I just watched it for the music ;)
G'day Harry. Born in 1963. Christmas movie to me is "It's a Wonderful Life ".
All depends how you think of and celebrate Crispness… for me it is the Solstice and festival of Saturnalia, or even Festivus for the rest of us. So Die Hard is a perfect fit. Yappy Pie Face Muddy Plucker!
I've been wearing glasses since age 10. I find things at work people miss because one eye is overcorrected to 20-15.
Morning Harry of that age 67 retried going for walks around London to keep active and building the models nice one with the multi-pass great film, you can fine that symbol on Finnish tanks of WW2 and you can't say any think these days with out some snow fake being offended or you getting arrested any how back to my Tamiya pink panther its a old kit but i love Land rovers thanks for video and have a great day
Once I painted Leopard spots on my Dragon Panther tank the armour guys stopped asking me to complete the build LOL
Apparently God became very stingy with giving out senses of humor after the mid-1990s.
This explains a lot
Ah yes the rivvet counters.....that is why i left IPMS Ireland and will NEVER join another club again
There is such a thing in ireland? Never realised
It is also the reason I don’t bother entering modelling competitions anymore. You are at the whim of their bias, not judged on your model making skills. As I said in my “How to win model comps” video where I proved “the little red airplane always wins”.
@HarryHoudiniModels exactly..if i want to strap 2 jet engines on to a submarine and calk it the "Bat Boat" then i will......screw the snobs and perfecionts....let them have their melt down
@nedlooby7419 yep...there certainly is IPMS Ireland
Online echo chambers were the end of polite civilization.
It was always known inbreeding creates hideous mis formed things
I'm overdue for my new glasses..getting tricky fooling with my kits
I read that as "fooling with my bits."
I think I need glasses too.
Fooling with your bits… what ever makes you happy mate
Sweet Jebus. Don't sing that one Oingo Boingo song, they'll lynch you. Hard to believe Danny Elfman went from New Wave to orchestral soundtracks just because Tim Burton was his best friend...
You lost me….. context please?
Harry, Harry, Harry...... well said! Thank you for speaking common-sense! Oh wait, does that still exist? Lol
How come no one talks about Finlands blue version of the swa57ika, that was used before and a longtime after Germany did. Why doesnt anyone who models Japanese items get the same criticism? They were far from gentleman like. Irrespective, history cannot be changed, but we can learn.
Keep up the truth telling!
I guess you just can’t ban a red dot?
the german intro felt slightly insulting but still, thank you
No sauerkraut was harmed in the making of this video.
I always like Phil Mc Crakin! It Cracks me up! What do you call an Eskimo Peeping Tom? Took A Look!😂
Don’t forget Pat Fitsphillip and Phillip Fitpatrick!
Cool as always.
as a cucumber matey!
Amen Harry it's all for fun
Certainly is matey
Oh Man, know that feeling..lol
So say we all
I have been licking the buttons as advised, and I couldn't get it to work.
Thank you… just lick harder :D
Loved your talk
Good on you Tim
How does an Australian cat sound when dubbed in French? Multi-lingual Bask.
Unwritten rule of the post office- don’t talk to people.
I didn’t know it was a rule?
@ I worked for years with Aust Post, it’s a rule like don’t listen to rivet counters.
The US Armys 45th infantry sholder patch was a swastika.
I did not know that.. clockwise or anticlockwise?
@HarryHoudiniModels I don't know.
Thanks Harry, I’ve developed one in my right eye since using my resin printer
Be very careful Cos… that stuff is so toxic and sneaks up on you.
l knew the world was going to hell in a hand basket when model companies brought in photo esch , half a dozen parts to build when in the past a couple would have sufficed , individual track links with horror of horrors individual teeth to be mount ed on them to !
I am with you there about Matchbox kits. A joy to build out of the box!
Hear, hear!
Speak up sonny?
@@HarryHoudiniModels You da man! Keep it up
Wait, wait wait, you're Australian ? why didn't someone tell me :)), I knew you lot are weird but never knew you kept your pen in your pocket, only joking.
Multi Pass.
correct! I had a brain fart when I voiced it…. but there is text on the screen with “Multi Pass”
Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie, it's an action move that happens to take place around Christmas!!!
Hippy Pile Hay Muddy Trucker! Each to their own :)
But it doesn't feel like Christmas until Hans Gruber has fallen off the Nakatomi Plaza ;)
Tired and unfunny… sounds like my ex wife… sorry you had such a bad experience watching my video… please unsubscribe
Oddly enough, it's not illegal in Denmark nor Poland. Maybe frowned upon in public but not when displayed in context e.g. a model at a fair or model shop.
