What tends to happen is we walk around all day and then look up what we visited later. Typically we don’t have a lot of time to research before we go out, so we legit have no clue what we’re during when we’re actually filming, LOL. But yes, we discovered more about the city after we walked through it. I was really confused about William of Orange because I kept reading about him but the dates were hundreds of years apart. @@RockyandKimball LOL... All the German William of Orange-Nassau's - it can be a lot, we got 4. 😵💫🤪 But agree it can get strange and confusing. The "4th" is our current king. Willem-Alexander. We had 3 generations of only women being born, after "the curse" with Willem III. Who once had 3 sons before Wilhelmina was born to reign. King William/Wilhelm (de zwijger) [The first] began his life as a *count of Nassau-Dillenburg* [modern day Hesse(n) Germany]. He was a very loyal servant of Karel V - King of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Our Spanish war/war of independence was with Phillip II, King of Spain and the son of Karel V (Charles V) aka Karel van Luxemburg. Guess I only left out the 2nd... He was our gay/bisexual king... love him. The threat of making his homo-/bisexuality public played part in his agreement of making changes to the constitution in 1848. In 1833 Thorbecke was already aware of William II's "sodomy" - as it was called back then. This all sound very simple but if the "Great Powers" at that time didn't see a benefit in our independence or that of Belgium later, or Luxemburg later again, it would not have happened as it did in the end. Europe once was like a quilt of "kingdoms, lands, duchies, counties, countries." But I am sure you are aware of that.
It’s all so fascinating. It’s also amazing to think that it really wasn’t all that long ago that things were very different across Europe. A lot can happen in a few hundred years. Thanks so much for the information you sent through! 🥰
@@RockyandKimball True, history often seems like something older than us, but it is also part of us, still, and our recent/present ways of life and conflicts. As a child a 20+ y/o = an adult, a person who knows shit...as an 20 y/o those older than you will still see you as minor, some one wet behind the ears still, naïve and still with so much to learn. if one is 30-40+ y/o = they are old to a child. For a 60 y/o they are still young. So 300 years ago seems like a very long ass time, but it fits within 10 generations. 10 people that came before you did and lived a life on this planet. Growing up made me understand history better as a concept, and the importance given to it, or not. And how "history" is not that old. Pre-history is a lot more containing and older, in the actual history of humans. And we still do things because of the influence of these ancestors. Example; the difference growing up/living during, and newer generations narrations of the times you lived through. Their knowledge based on the "recaps" and highlights given by the common consensus, the authority, and the Chinese whisper effect. As was/is mine about that what came before me, which still shaped and influenced me without me fully realizing how. I wasn't that much different growing up. The past was the past and not relevant to my life now directly, little did I understand back than. Now/the present is nothing more than a mix of past and future. There is also a difference in learning in what you have to know and get taught, versus learning what is interesting or interests yourself at that time.
So… in the netherlands paying with credit cards is not popular at all. One, dutch people are frugal and most only spend what they actually have. Credit culture is not a thing. Credit score does not exist here. The other thing is that credit purchases are costlier for the shop owner. So its not something they actively promote. That said basicly all of the netherlands is cashless and electronic but we use chipped debit cards and or banking apps/apple/google pay. Also, if you have apple pay it should work, even if its connected to a visa card. The Netherlands will transition more to Visa soon.
Thanks so much for letting us know. I don’t blame the shop owners at all, as they have a living to make and the card companies have enough money. That’s so interesting about having no credit score there. We absolutely adore the Netherlands and appreciate the people. They were so kind and welcoming. Anyway, thanks again for watching our video and sending us a note here. Have a wonderful week 👨❤️💋👨
For sure! We really want to come explore the Voorhout. I haven’t heard of the 2005 quartier though. Will have to look it up ^_^ Thanks for watching our channel and leaving comments. So nice to hear from people familiar with these cities. 🥰
Yes, it was better in the 1980s. There were about 10 gay cafe's/night clubs/discotheques in The Hague. Most of them are gone now. I have some really good memories about a couple of them. The music was better. You could smoke everywhere. You could drink below the age of 18. In general The Hague was far more enjoyable in those days. None of the "skyscrapers" were build. The Hague looked far better. So many well known shops and cinema's are sadly gone.
80s wins!!! lol. I wonder why so many of the gay places went away. That’s a bummer :( If you don’t mind me asking, what is it like living in The Netherlands as a gay person? Everyone was very friendly towards us, but we have a fairly limited view of the finer details of daily life there.
@@RockyandKimball There were different reasons why the gay places stopped. When I was 19 in 1989 I came out of the closet. The next step was going to a gay bar. I wanted to meet other gay guys. I usually went to a place called The Stairs (from 22:00 to 02:00). It was a modern style bar-dancing. Although it wasn't age restricted, it was the best place to meet other guys of my age. At 2 o'clock I went to Aquarius, which was open all night, but it didn't have much of an audience earlier in the evening and it was rather expensive. It was the first one to close down. Most people only visited it on friday and saturday. In the 90' s the night live in Amsterdam became highly popular, so Aquarius went bankrupt. Instead of the Aquarius I started going to the Strass, which was also open all night, but it had an old-fashioned farmer-type interior, and it was visited by a rather large group of lesbians. But it turned out to be a rather nice place. I don't remember why I stopped going there. I think there was some trouble with the opening hours, or something. The Strass closed down at the end of the 90's. The Stairs was shut down just a couple of years ago, because the owner retired. A lot of young guys nowadays seem to find each other by apps on their phones. Being gay in the Netherlands isn't really a big deal for most. The Netherlands is the first country in the world that legalized same sex marriage. As a teenager I had already seen guys kissing on tv. Oddly enough I experienced the 90's as more safe than today.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that. It’s fascinating how things are changing. Kimball and I have been together since 97, so we have absolutely zero context for what it’s like to date in today’s world. From outsiders looking in, it all feels quite impersonal. We keep saying we would never date again if something happened to one of us. I’m sure people meet and connect well occasionally on those apps, but they feel, from our point of view, to mainly be tools for hooking up. Feels like it would be a bit more challenging to form a friend base and community that way, but honestly we have no clue lol. Either way, I’m glad we were born in the 80s so we have the experience of life before the digital age. Thanks again for chatting and have a beautiful week ahead. 👨❤️💋👨
You said “let’s just cross the road illegally” (33:01) however jaywalking doesn’t exist in the Netherlands so it is totally legal to cross the street. The term jaywalking was invented by the automobile industry to get more space on the roads for cars as opposed to people walking.
@@RockyandKimball 🤣No, they still abide by the ancient & laws of the wild + nature. Home is where your heart is, or one shakes their tail feathers. Where one lives and participates in the local society. This is their summer home, they are quite posh as Peking Ducks. 😉 "Immigration" and citizenships changed with the invention of USA as an immigrant nation. Burgerschap/citizenship has changed and evolved since the understanding of CIVIS ROMANVS SVM & Ich Bin ein Berliner to "I'm an American". My guess they originate from Duckburg, which has a globe-spanning empire.

Europe once was like a quilt of "kingdoms, lands, duchies, counties, countries."
But I am sure you are aware of that.

Juuuuust missed the Voorhout and the 2005 quartier. Next time
For sure! We really want to come explore the Voorhout. I haven’t heard of the 2005 quartier though. Will have to look it up ^_^
Thanks for watching our channel and leaving comments.
That’s a bummer :(
If you don’t mind me asking, what is it like living in The Netherlands as a gay person?
@@RockyandKimball Thanks. It probably contained a lot of language errors.
Have a nice week too.
Nice vid, by the way.
You said “let’s just cross the road illegally” (33:01) however jaywalking doesn’t exist in the Netherlands so it is totally legal to cross the street. The term jaywalking was invented by the automobile industry to get more space on the roads for cars as opposed to people walking.
Oh amazing! We had no idea. Thanks so much for watching taking the time to let us know this 😊
Have a wonderful weekend 👨❤️💋👨
ALL FOOD IN EUROPE IS MORE THEN 100 % BETTER.
1000% honestly. Lol. I feel like we can never go back now. 😎
17 minutes, kid you not - these are asian ducks, not the traditional native dutch duck.
I wonder if they have to check in with immigration every few months 🧐
@@RockyandKimball 🤣No, they still abide by the ancient & laws of the wild + nature. Home is where your heart is, or one shakes their tail feathers. Where one lives and participates in the local society.
This is their summer home, they are quite posh as Peking Ducks. 😉
"Immigration" and citizenships changed with the invention of USA as an immigrant nation. Burgerschap/citizenship has changed and evolved since the understanding of CIVIS ROMANVS SVM & Ich Bin ein Berliner to "I'm an American".
My guess they originate from Duckburg, which has a globe-spanning empire.

Walking in front the huge seat of the Dutch government and then only pointing out the pond...
Then filming the royal palace and saying nothing...
Yup! That’s us! 🤣
We actually did learn more about the city as we were exploring, but not before we filmed that portion. We enjoy learning by walking and talking to locals vs googling everything ahead of time. But we’re just weird like that I guess.
But we never mean to offend. We adored everything in the Netherlands 🥰
