As a single woman who has done some remodeling in three different homes…I sometimes find it difficult to find male contractors who don’t try to talk me out of what I want and I have to remind them who is writing the check for their fees…it has been frustrating. It is great that he listened to you and respected your requests!
As someone who has remodeled three homes, I understand how frustrating it can be when contractors don't listen to your requests. It's great that you found someone who respected your needs!
Speaking as an interior designer based in NYC with high-expectation clients, I tend to be critical of missed details and cut corners when looking at the work of others. That said, I'm staggered by the beautiful and professional results on this project! Every detail was well thought out and perfectly (and tastefully) executed. I'm not a fan of open kitchens or "windows" into adjoining rooms; however, this was so beautifully done that I think you may have converted me! Bravo. My only quibble, and it's very minor, is that I would not have repeated the blue pebble tile in the shower niche. The focal point is the back wall. Never distract. On the reverse, I loved it as part of the gray tile "waterfall", so it may just be personal taste. In any event, I hope you have years of enjoyment in your new home and many "excuses" to show it off!
When you hire an interior designer do they manage getting contractors to do this like install cabinets, tile work, and floor? Or do they normally only stick to helping you select what you want like furnishings?
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous feedback! As interior designers ourselves, your opinion truly means a lot. We’re thrilled to hear that you appreciated the overall design and execution, especially considering your high expectations.
@@H37P5kY57 An interior designer is responsible for the overall design concept of the project from architecture to both soft and hard furnishings. They can also help you select cabinetry, accessories, art, antique or vintage pieces. In NYC it is illegal for a designer to act as a contractor (unless they are licensed) or engage contractors on your behalf. We can suggest names for you to contact, and we can be present for any meetings to guide you, but the selection of a contractor is ultimately up to you, and the Letter of Agreement is between you and them alone. This would be true if an architect is required also. Condos get renovated all the time. As you age, it is nice to have the condo association and management company handle things, but unit owners should serve on the board and contribute to decision making.
This is really beautiful. Some of those touches, such as the tile work, the flooring in the bathroom, the windows, this has to be one of the nicest renovations-an accessible shower, brilliant.
I know this building well and she chose the very best floor plan there. That old floor! Yikes. What a spectacular renovation on what was a dank space. She was right to want to gut it to the doorknobs! Absolutely beautiful now.
I watch a tremendous amount of home, condo, apartment television renovation design programming on my down time because it adds to my joy as someone who is extremely detail oriented, not an on-air influencer, but everyone I know is amazed at how I design, build, and create beauty in any space. I say all this because this is the first renovated condo/apartment space that I have viewed in 4 years where I literally stated PERFECT.
Thank you very much for your comment. We always try to get top-notch end results on our projects, and Charlie is one of our perfectionist designers who wants everything to be as perfect and seamless as possible, as he promises his clients.
My goodness! You home is Lovely!!! The changes you and your contractor made make so much sense. I particularly like the way you opened up the kitchen and enlarged the breakfast room. The colors you chose makes one feel invited into a very special home!!!
Beautiful apartment! Love all the changes and updates you made. My husband spent years in a wheelchair before he passed. He would have really enjoyed having that nice open bathroom. I also love your kitchen and that you pushed the wall back to open up the dining room. Such clever and useful design.
Doesn't feel like a flat at all! A light, bright and serene home with amazing openess & flow. I can see why Charlie's departure left a void, what a lovely guy! 🥂
This reno has given the space such a calm feeling. What a beautiful place to live. And it seems the company was very responsible as well as talented. Wonderful results.
Thank you very much for your comment and kind words about Charlie. He is a very detail-oriented and talented designer who focuses on creating a space with the best color harmony based on the client's taste in the most functional way possible.
I downsized from a 2000 sq foot 3 bedroom 2 bath apt in a 8000 sq foot bldg we owned in Chicago to a 750 sq foot 1 bedroom coop apt in Brooklyn, NY, which was where I raised my daughter. She lives there now. Then I downsized again to a 399 sq ft tiny house for myself in SC. At my age, less is more, I don’t want more than 1 bathroom to clean, but I am going to remodel the bathroom to take out the tub and put in a walk in shower with a seat to accommodate my aging. After renovating my mom’s house (4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms) I know I don’t want so much house to take care of. Nice job and lots of care went into the work. If she is happy, that is all that matters. Good looking out for her son’s future needs.
Pushing the wall back & angling the entrance to the breakfast / dining area is wonderful! Overall improvement of flow, layout & finishes. What a beautiful condo!so glad you found a respectful & talented person who goes over & above.
I’m overwhelmed with the beauty and functionality of this condo. I wish you included the original floorplan layout (or footprint) and then the new as well as the square footage.
Good morning, from raining Lakewood, OH! This was beautifully done and serves as a project inspiration for one of my clients who also lives in an apartment complex that requested a monochromatic grey tone. However, the color within the video will also work as a pop color on the ceiling. Thank you for sharing.

Bravo!..it looks amazing from the 'before' and 'after'. My only question would be that I know from owning my own apartment and doing a renovation also, (in the UK many apartments are privately owned but are leasehold (which restricts you from doing many things in renovations etc) was it difficult for you to do this in the US, and what permits were needed etc?
It would be interesting to learn how challenging this approval process was for the owner and if she needed to have any plans amended as a result. From personal experience, (I live in DC just south of N Bethesda) I can state that this home is most likely a condominium or co-operative. For either, the process is that the owner submits the request with contractor details and plans to the condominium, or co-op, board. The board reviews the request in accordance with building by-laws and rules and approves or denies (or asks clarifying questions). In my building (for which I am condo president), we will approve most renovation requests provided they do not modify the exterior of the building, adhere to structural allowances, remediate any asbestos, and provide contractor license and insurance details. A gorgeous renovation and beautiful home! Love that shower with the slope and zero step-up!
Thank you very much for your comment. Charlie's answer; Basically, the company has to provide the drawings depending on what you do in the unit (it might require a building permit with signed engineering drawings that are approved by the county, electrical and plumbing permits, and if you need to do sprinkler head relocation, you have to have an additional permit), license, COI, and copy of the scope of work. All these will be reviewed by the building management and engineer before approval. I hope his answer is helpful to you.
I liked a lot of it The stand out for me was the guest bathroom with the blue tile. The wall to wall carpet was an absolute no-no. I don't like wall to wall carpet bedrooms much less in the living room which will get dirty and is impossible to clean. The handicapped bathroom was just so-so. Should have had a built-in instead of that movable cart with the towels and a little bit more contrast. But not sure if that decision was made because a wheelchair-bound person was actually using that bathroom. Kitchen could also have used a little bit more contrast. White on white kitchens are kind of boring, but I did like the backsplash tile.
The apartment is absolutely gorgeous. I would like to see more of Charlie's designs on TH-cam.
Thank you very much for your comment. We will provide more of his project testimonials soon.
Very beautiful design! I love the colors and everything looks amazing! Thanks for sharing! 💯 ❣️

I have had the same problem too. It seems that some contractors would rather do what is easier for them rather than what the client wants.

I am usually a fan of all things white in bathrooms and kitchens, but the blue-tiled shower is my fave.

At 67 I am making plans for the future. This inspires me to look at condos differently.

Magnificent. A job beautifully done. KUDOS to the homeowner and to the contractor.
This so beautiful 😊Job well done! I am thinking about doing the same exact thing, moving from my home into my old apartment 👍💯Sherry Chicago!

I am a retired Geriatrician, your home is lovely but please consider grab bars in your bathrooms…fall prevention is very important. Enjoy your beautiful home.
Thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment.
There was one in the ensuite. It looked like a towel rack but it was very beefy so I think it was a grab bar.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment. We have added grab bars in both bathrooms in the confirmed locations with our client.
the wall surface area is spinning my head, but I really like the renovations.

Beautiful renovation. i'm curious why you didn't extend the hardwood floor into the living area, especially given the wheelchair accessible design.
Thank you very much for your comment. It was the homeowner's request to have a carpet in the rooms and the main living room area.
Lovely home.
