I once helped out a lower grade band where the Pipe Major couldn't actually play the pipes. He would strike them up and never play a tune I could recognize. In a higher grade band, vicious glares in the circle was the main motivator.
It's an old 80s MAPLE Siiclair. We stained them dark when wengot them so that their bright colour would get pre judged in the contest circle before they had a chance to hear them.
