  • In this first webinar, I cover some basic seismic concepts, talk about force-based design along with some principal short coming of this approach and discuss the need for performance-based design.

The webinar series will focus on the following areas in bridge seismic engineering, not necessarily in the described order:
    (1) Fundamentals and design approaches
    (2) Earthquake resisting systems and seismic load paths
    (3) Equation of motion and basic introduction to seismic analysis methods
    (4) Introduction to deep foundations design philosophy
    (5) Detailing for seismic-resistant design
Materials covered are basic and foundational in nature. North American practice and the new Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code CSA-S6-19 philosophy is specifically emphasized.

It was an excellent presentation. Having done my PhD on R factor I know how difficult it is to make this easy to understand for practicing engineers. I wish I had the opportunity to benefit from this webinar when I was doing my PhD. Things would have become much easier.
Once again, an excellent way to explain it.
    Regards
    Yasir

Dear sir very informative webinar thanks a lot.
    1. my first question is any of commercial analysis and design software adopted fully PBD as a feature.
    2. The second question is I am confused in plastic hinges (fuses) that what is the physical meaning of it is that some sort of detailing mechanism that after EQ event we retrofit it or replace some sort of member, please guide it, dear sir.
    3. The third question is how we decide either in case of elastic or elasto-plastic that much displacement is required for ductility.
    Thanks, sir
    Best regards

I am a mechanical engineer doing some seismic work on a vessel base frame. You, civil engineers, need a lot of imagination to understand these concepts of ductility and seismic rules I would say.
