Casting Emma Stone was just perfect. You enter the theater with that La La Land vibe and you get out disgusted by her character.

Emma Stone really did something special with this character. She truly embodied the “viper” that this film promised her to be, yet you can’t help but feel slightly bad for her.

Afterward: Sarah Churchill and her husband the Duke of Marlborough regained political power and influence following the death of Queen Anne. Sarah lived into her eighties and published a memoir that presented a highly unflattering portrait of Queen Anne. Abigail also lived to be quite old. Following the death of Queen Anne, she retired from court and lived quietly until her death in 1734.

That guy with the duck isn't Sarah's husband. She seemed to actually love her husband like she did the Queen, love for them but love for country more. She never lied that I remember she was just too damn blunt for her own good. I think in real history after the Queen died she and her husband came back into power. It was Anne who let praise delude her and Abigail who was "playing a different game" that truly ended up alone with the rabbits representing the pieces of them they had lost and would continue to lose to and take from each other till the end.

I quite disagree with this reading of the movie. You get to see early on that Abigail too is manipulative and cunning, with the herbs thing, sneaking into the the queen's room and so smoothly managing credit for the herbs by faking a cough. Her wit is always as ready as that of Sarah. it's more a crescendo of manipulativeness and sadism, but the whole film I had the impression that she wouldn't be stopped.

Not being a history expert I don't know what really the situation was, but I don't think that Sarah was the "good" one, I mean she was just controlling the queen, telling her to double the taxes and actually blackmailing her. I m not saying that Abigail was good either, but it's not a black and white situation, they are just interesting characters with different nuances of personality.
I also think that a theme in the film is how power changes people, at first Abigail didn't want to shoot those birds, and at the end she tortured a rabbit just cause she can.
Any way very good review, cheers!

I'm a little worried about how Queen Anne and politics of this era are portrayed. Marlborough was a great man who is completely minimized in the movie, and this period of serious constitutional development in British politics is glossed over, with very important political actors portrayed as self servicing, corrupt goons. It's a shame. Queen Anne wrecked her health trying to produce an heir, but she was very much in love with Prince George her husband, and this famous love affair is completely ignored in order to make her look like a stupid, indulgent lesbian. I recognize the movie for its great acting, but it's a very bad and inherently untruthful story line.

Just wanted to clarify. Not an unecessary 'u'. That's just how we spell Favourite in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

I was disappointed at the ending cz given the humour at the beginning of the movie ..I expected a happy ending ...but then It seemed more right .
In the end when abigail is rubbing the queen's foot , my brain kept replaying to the scene when Sarah tells her -"wait , you still think you won "

Hey, people, commenting on how 'only America`drops the U in favourite - you mean USA. Canada is like half of North-America, and 'favourite' is the official spelling here too. So my point is: try not to be ignorant when you are accusing someone of ignorance.

Sarah wasn’t a good person either. Throughout the entire film she convinces the Queen to make terrible decisions for the country. I’m assuming her motives were based on money and power bc she pushes for higher taxes and an unnecessary battle. I do believe she loved the queen somewhat, but like she told Abigail…”We’re playing very different games.”

The Favourite is NOT an historical costume drama. It is OUR picture perfect contemporary world of instagram facebook and social media where nobodies become superstars at the flick of a keyboard like .Look at me dont look at me fortnite bunnies and ducks entertain the mindless. Fake news like this story reduces the real world wars and famine to the background. Anyone who thinks this is a historical costume drama needs to light a candle in the great dark empty space between their ears. Brilliant movie by a great director whose genius is thrown with wild abandon to the masses like pearls before swine.

    Spoilers
It is fascinating that in a sense no e of them are happy.
Sarah while she does have her husband that she does seem to actually like, forever ruined her relationship with the Queen.
Abigail is even with title and wealth is stuck as a servant to someone she doesn't truly care for, in a joyless marriage and actively miserable as she know she ruined her last remaining family's life.
Anne is still queen, and while she asserts herself over Abigail is now stuck with her as that would mean she would be alone and sick.
She didn't have to banish Sarah , but calling her back would show weakness and she can't trust anyone I her court, even to find if Sarah really stole from her and not.
And calling back Sarah would bring back all the toxicity there was before and neither will truly know the others honest feelings about the other.
In the end its Harley who gets to be Prime Minister but who knows how long that will last...
