Still love the later two, as they were real powerhouses in action, but they were mostly Ethan-centric than team centric.
@@motherplayer - Actually, I found it to be the opposite. The team in Ghost Protocol worked too well, that in essence, they were just extensions of Ethan. Each move they make is always under his orders. The backstories for Carter and Brandt only exist to spicen up their characters, but otherwise inconsequential. On the contrary, in Rogue Nation, the characters were fleshed out more organically; Faust had her own mission and wasn't following Hunt's command and Brandt's allegiance is blurred. This helps preserving the tension between the characters, keeping them on our toes without the need for unnecessary backstories.
I doubt that. They changed the tone pretty much with every movie. The first one had a complex and intelligent plot, it was a classic spy thriller and a brilliant adaptation but the action was minimal. The 2nd one was your generic save the world bs with Ethan Hunt being James Bond more than Ethan Hunt. The third one is where the stunts, tension and the smart villains come in. Average amount of action. The 4th one ramped up the stunts and action to eleven but sacrificed on the plot(and the intelligence and acting) of the film big time. The 5th and 6th ones are the ones where we finally strike a balance in all these aspects.
@@spacemann1425 I agree with pretty much everything you said, except on the fact that MI5 felt more like the fourth movie instead of Fallout. I think the sixth one was far greater than any other before, being the best in the franchise.
I love this entire series, yet my wife had seen only the first two films and gave up on it. I reintroduced her to the series using MI3 and she started loving it. We watched each one until Fallout and she thought it got so much better.
Great spotlight into a fun entry of the series. I agree that Philip Seymour Hoffman is the most memorable of the villains. RIP to one of the greatest. MI:2 is a guilty favorite of mine. Action is so over the top, I love it. I feel it’s a misunderstood movie.
All the MI movies has been positively received by the wider audience but mostly, faves has always been MI 4, 5 and 6. My Favorite one is MI 6 (Fallout)
Growing up with MI3 let's you understand the movies better. It is by far the best movie in the series, just by considering the risks and inspirations they learned from.
Fact I’ve said before even if someone likes another one more than 3 MI3 imo is the best example of what MI is all about and definitely set the blueprints for the rest of the series
I think M:I 3 has such a different feel also because of the way it is shot. There were so many more close-ups used throughout. Probably because of JJ's TV background at the time. Not as many wide angle "cinematic" shots that the series is full of. But I think it fits the tone and feel of the movie since we are becoming closer and more intimate with the characters in this installment.
This film had a great story, great characters, had the best villain in the franchise, filled with action and suspense. And one of the greatest movie openings of all time
My brother and I were in the rabbit hole of Alias when we went to see MI: 3 ... and from the beginning we agreed: It seemed like an extended episode of the series. We liked it a lot and I have always thought it was because we were very fans of the series. For me it is still my favorite movie of the saga.
This very question drives me crazy: I wouldn't come close to a Fast & Furious movie or a 007 movie with a 10 foot pole, M:I feels about in the middle of those two, yet I have seen Ghost Protocol like 500 times
I definitely agree, Philip Seymour Hoffman is the best villain in the series. I’m sure it helped that he was arguably the best actor of his generation.
I always did say to myself that JJ Abrams knows how to revive a franchise (for the most part). Just look at Star Trek, Star Wars The Force Awakens, and this movie.
@@johngoodman8954 Let’s face it, even The Force Awakens has its naysayers. I love it though, and I agree it brought ‘Star Wars’ back into the mainstream. The Rise of Skywalker stalled things at best, but luckily we got The Mandalorian to keep things afloat.
The most interesting thing to me is that JJ always gets flak for how much he emphasizes the style of filmmaking. But it works here because it’s done in tandem with the emotional core of the story.
I was about 10 when the 1st MI came out, and I thought the CIA wire scene and the helicopter blast scene were the greatest things I had seen on screen, so the nostalgia alone makes this movie faultless. MI2 would seamlessly fit into the late 90s explosion/slow motion/action era of Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage and evidently John Woo, I loved it.......ofcourse until I saw MI3, I was older and it was hinted around this time that Tom wanted to make this not only a trilogy, but a series of movies so this made it the movie I rooted for the most which as you would call it...Save the franchise :) The rest is history. I watch the whole series of movies every time a new one is about to be released, i've learned to appreciate all of them in their unique way, but I must say Fallout is just about as perfect an action movie as it gets.
Contribution of MI2 to the franchise: 1) Establishing Ethan as an acrobatic superspy, We didn't know anything about Ethan's hand to hand & gun fight skills in M:I 2) Voice changing sticker 3) Start of bike chase sequences 4) Awesome background scores THANK YOU JOHN WOO!
MI:III is easily my favorite in the franchise. Because of all the reasons you mentioned. We learn that Ethan is human, with flaws, with emotions, & sometimes he does fail. But his fails have dire consequences, & we as the audience get to see those consequences & we connect with him.
And it still IS MY FAVOURITE! for all the reasons you just mentioned: emotion, deep personal interest from Ethan for the missions, an excellent villain like P.Saymour and stil...crazy and lots of fun action!
It surprises me that MI III is as underrated as it is. I’ve always thought it was a super solid action film. I think it often gets overlooked because the series continually got better from there and that was the starting point
It has a kickass opening scene, a very charismatic and menacing villain but the action scenes are not as goodly shot as the other ones. Too much overediting and shaky cam.
Thank you so much for showing how much to appreciate about this specific installment. MI:3 has always been my favourite too do to exactly being more than "just" action.
Mission impossible 2 grossed more than 500 million and one of the top grossing movie of year 2000. Just letting you all know that it’s not a flop commercially.
"[3:35] For the first time, they are also about Ethan helping his friends and family, people he feels a responsibility towards, which makes it all more painful when we see Lindsey die in a particularly gruesome way" - That's basically an explanation of how fridging works.
I would’ve liked to see a lot more of Lindsey. They could’ve fridged her two movies later where it would have had a huge impact on the audience and not just Ethan. Having his protege joining him on dangerous missions is very fertile ground for good storytelling. I love Ilsa but to see Ethan working with a woman he cares about and ISN’T romantically invested in would have been awesome.
Ok yes, it's fun to find a video explaining the importance of MI:III to the franchise in perfect detail (and way better than I ever have), but it's way MORE fun to find a video that says everything you've ever wanted to explain about a movie in an easy to share format. Great stuff, thanks!
I think MI3 might be my favorite in the series, not because it's the best, but because, like you said, it set up the tone for the rest of the franchise. I'll never forget the power of that opening scene. In fact I remade it in college for a student project. Definitely don't think any other villain in the franchise can match PSH. RIP.
To be fair to the first one, the intent was "out with the old (Phelps), and in with the new (Hunt)." Supposedly, they tried to get Peter Graves, the original Phelps, to reprise his role for the movie but he turned it down because they wrote Phelps as the bad guy. Ultimately, even though it wasn't nearly as action-packed as any of those after it, it still accomplished what it set out to do: transition Mission: Impossible from "classic TV series mostly remembered for its music" to "contemporary movie series with high production values and even higher stakes stories." Very rarely is there a movie where you can tell there's gonna be a sequel in the *middle* of the movie instead of at the end. The first Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie was one such film.
When they capture the bad dude , Hoffman rip, and are leaving on a boat away from the Vatican is one of my favorite shots of all time , in HD its a beautiful shot !
"Brian de Palma...got to stretch his flair for 'split-screen editing'" played over footage of what is clearly a shot filmed on a split diopter lens, that in no way features any split-screen editing/post-production. I don't think M:I1 contains any split-screen editing whatsoever, but I admit I haven't seen it in a while though I know it pretty well. A diopter lens does not even produce an "optical effect" it's literally raw optics (beyond the aesthetic effect obviously), but an aesthetic impact does not an optical effect make.
Having only seen all the movies once each, I found 3 to be the most memorable honestly. Also, this movie introduces Benji so it’s automatically the best.
Yo I feel like you have been CRANKING out a ton of great content lately and I've been enjoying all of it. Keep it up. ✌️ Btw, love MI3. It was actually the first MI movie that I saw when I was a teenager and was obviously the perfect introduction to what the franchise would become. Certainly underrated in my opinion and I'm glad you're giving it some love!
I got into this series for Dead Reckoning Part 1 and I’ve had a blast watching the movies, nice to see this film save the franchise and give us a great streak of entertaining fun action movies.
As far as the scene in fallout being "impossible" without the foundation of this move, Fallout is the only MI movie I've seen and I thought it worked pretty well with zero background. 4:43
I remember when I went to the cinema with my brother to see this when it released and that intro man, wow. That really indeed set the tone for the movie. And Philip really is awesome here.
People give JJ Abrams way too little credit. Even if people don’t love every one of his movies, he’s got a large catalog of impressive films, shows, and franchises like he’s either directed or produced.
What is interesting about MI movies is that first movie feels like completely different from from the rest and second one feels completely different from the rest . You could say first mission impossible is better James Bond movie ( even the James Bond rule to sleep with not single woman happens ) and for some reason Ethan can't fight for shit even though he is very good at fighting in the other movies. Second one is an straight up action movie though beginning is kind of meh . And rest of them is pretty consistent but third one does feel darker than the rest . And if you start from third one you don't have in the back of your mind that Ethan banged his best friends wife in the first movie.
This movie has always been my favorite of the franchise. Besides having a great villain and story, I really enjoyed that they made it more personal and emotional. I thought the relationship Ethan has with his wife had depth. The way Ethan was brought to tears during the interrogation scene is brilliant and showed how emotional and vulnerable his character was.
Hot Take: I think MI 2 is better than MI 3, im sorry but MI 2 is fricking insane, like the stop mumbling scene was intense and is one of the best scenes of the entire franchise, or even when sean harris impersonates ethan and talks to his GF, that was insane, MI 2 has some of the best scenes but it doesn’t mean its all good, but MI 2 made me feel alive. Its bullshit, but the fun kind of bullshit, MI 3 is good but i honestly can’t remember much, there’s not really a standout moment or anything, aside from the opening, i do love the newer ones, but idk man i feel like the first 2 focused more on the mystery and spy stuff rather than action, like in MI 6 when benji is impersonating soloman lane i saw that coming, but the crazy shit of MI 2 i didn’t see any of that coming, 5 is my favorite don’t get me wrong, but MI 2 is much better than most people might say. EDIT: Oh man, im honestly shocked at how many people actually seem to like MI 2, i never would’ve thought anyone really did like it, most people see it as oh yeah that dumb one with motorbikes and shit, but judging by how many likes this got, its not the case, MI 2 is absolutely amazing, and alot of people don’t give it enough credit.
So on point! When I saw it I immediately thought it was the best for me, and it was noticeably a turning point for the franchise, seeing all the staples being followed now (for good and bad)
I totally Agree with this. This is the one that got me invested in the Franchise. Batman Begins saved the Batman franchise and brought it back to life.
I loved this movie. Saw it when I was a kid with my dad and was blown away. When I heard all the bad reviews from nostalgic fans I was confused. Thank you for this video.
I saw only the first 2... But I have to be honest I don't remember what happened in those movies, because not every action franchise can be Dragon Ball.
Nailed it! I was saying to myself, Kittridge is coming back, I remember him, now I want to see MI7! MI2 was flashy but since MI3, we started getting a consistent universe!
I loved all of them .. I think one and two were awesome and plain fun to watch ..,they were just the beginning .. kinda setting up Nathan and Luther’s bond … then continued to grow legs and an amazing team .. and kept going and going .. the action and scenes kept getting bigger and better … I think all of the films held something for everyone to enjoy and everyone’s got their favorite .. 🤔 I just love Tom Cruise’s movies 🍿 🎥.. He put the M in Movie Magic … Borrowing from the lyrics from one of the 007 movies ..”Nobody Does it Better.” 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
This is why I can't enjoy fully the Latest Star Trek movies. The original movies worked because we, as the fans, had a history with the characters that made things like Spock's death feel real and dramatic. The newer Star Trek films seem to want us to have these same connections to the characters, which explains the switch where Kirk dies fixing the core and Spock goes on an Ape-shit berserker chase in 'Into Darkness'. The problem is we haven't had the real buddie picture to cement this character bond that would lead Spock to the emotional breaking point. Now Spock has to be the one to do the chase because he is the only one strong enough to face off with Kahn, but the emotional instance that sets him off doesn't fit with his relationship with Kirk up to this point. If it had been Uhura that died that would be another thing we already see the deeply felt connection between the two characters. And that's the real problem when remakes try to use fan based knowledge as the emotional motivation to the new movies.
3 was always my favorite. It has Philip Seymour Hoffman and honestly I love the use of a McGuffin in this. They haven't done it in any other of the MI films.
Pretty sure MI3 was the first Mission Impossible movie I even saw... and I feel like that worked extremely well. I was connected to Ethan right away because I hadn't seen him any other way!

My favorite franchise of all time, the third movie definitely gave the franchise a new tone that it stuck with through out movies 4-6.
I think 4-6 is the best action trilogy of all time. Name one that is better…
Rogue Nation for me.
@@anubusxagreed
we early peeps. didn't know 3 saved the franchise though after 2, that does make sense.
Early! I love it
MI3 almost killed the franchise, don't listen to to this nerd
@@tynao2029 WHAT?
Love it. Let us know what you think of the video
@@Nerdstalgic Or course you love it, it’s the same opinion as in the video.
What was the inspirations?
Fact I’ve said before even if someone likes another one more than 3 MI3 imo is the best example of what MI is all about and definitely set the blueprints for the rest of the series
I couldnt agree more!!! It was the film that came out at the right time for me too !!
I have a soft spot for the first film but, goodness me, the series from 3 is stellar. It does not get enough love
Thank you for uploading this. I still very much enjoy this franchise and for sure waiting for the new movie
PLEASE do not let Producer Kathleen Kennedy anywhere close to this movie franchise.
all jokes aside, i actually love MI:2 aswell. the bike chase was absolutly stellar at the end.
It’s also written by Alex Kurtzman that I have heard that is currently ruining Star Trek
This film had a great story, great characters, had the best villain in the franchise, filled with action and suspense. And one of the greatest movie openings of all time
Describe a personality trait of characters besides Ethan and Luther.
MI2 was like a big budget 80s B-action movie. It was GREAT!!!
My brother and I were in the rabbit hole of Alias when we went to see MI: 3 ... and from the beginning we agreed: It seemed like an extended episode of the series. We liked it a lot and I have always thought it was because we were very fans of the series. For me it is still my favorite movie of the saga.
MI 2 is so underrated. Just binged the whole series and that one was so fun
2 is one of my most favorite movies of all time.
Is Mission: Impossible considered a guilty pleasure if the movies are actually really good? (Besides 2)
The later ones tend to be considered genuineily great
2 is great.
@@The3Virus Id say 3 is great honestly
@@weirdofromhalo If you really think about it, 2 is essentially the same movie as 2fast 2furious
I would say this movie is comparable to Fast Five.
Where both movies changed and set the tones for the franchise to follow suit afterwards.
More like Fast and Furious 2009 because it didn't do as well as it's follow ups box office wise
@@vgjunkie8386 I thought five did the best in the box office
@@user-ju4ew6hn1i not with MI III, it made 400 million while Ghost Protocol and any follow sequel made from 700 mil above.
I always did say to myself that JJ Abrams knows how to revive a franchise (for the most part). Just look at Star Trek, Star Wars The Force Awakens, and this movie.
^This!
Star Wars? 😂😂😂
I'm talking about The Force Awakens, not The Rise of Skywalker. Notice how I said for the most part.
@@johngoodman8954
Let’s face it, even The Force Awakens has its naysayers. I love it though, and I agree it brought ‘Star Wars’ back into the mainstream.
The Rise of Skywalker stalled things at best, but luckily we got The Mandalorian to keep things afloat.
In addition with Alex Kurtzman that wrote Mission Impossible 3
Unpopular opinion:
Mission Impossible is a better series than James Bond
Undoubtedly, James Bond was merely early plus they tend are more bland compared to MI (post -2) series
That's an unpopular opinion?
Naah.
Bond has class.
@Aum 9403 are you kidding me. Mission Impossible is realistic?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!
I love both.
The most interesting thing to me is that JJ always gets flak for how much he emphasizes the style of filmmaking. But it works here because it’s done in tandem with the emotional core of the story.
MI:2 is actually my favorite. Was the first one I saw at a young age and have a soft spot for it.
Loved mi 2. Super glad you didn’t disrespect it!!!
Contribution of MI2 to the franchise:
1) Establishing Ethan as an acrobatic superspy, We didn't know anything about Ethan's hand to hand & gun fight skills in M:I
2) Voice changing sticker
3) Start of bike chase sequences
4) Awesome background scores
THANK YOU JOHN WOO!
About the voice changer, you're not wrong (if I remember, Hunt had to impersonate some US congressman or something w/o a voice change)
This could be the best and most underrated part 3 of a movie series !
Davian: What's your name?
Do have a family?.. A wife?
I'm gonna hurt her.. I'm gonna hurt her really bad..
MI:III is easily my favorite in the franchise. Because of all the reasons you mentioned. We learn that Ethan is human, with flaws, with emotions, & sometimes he does fail. But his fails have dire consequences, & we as the audience get to see those consequences & we connect with him.
This is my favorite in the series. It was so different and unpredictable when it came out compared to the first 2.
Just watched it the other day for the first time since it came out. Felt so grounded but so high energy and exciting. Loved it
I don’t care what they think about Mission: Impossible 2…..Mission: Impossible 2 is hella fun and John Woo is an action Maestro…….
Thank you so much for showing how much to appreciate about this specific installment. MI:3 has always been my favourite too do to exactly being more than "just" action.
MI3 was the first I got to see and I remember it best! PSH RIP
RIP.
The MI-3 to MI-6 movies are very well made. Some of my favorite action movies in the last decade.
To be fair to the first one, the intent was "out with the old (Phelps), and in with the new (Hunt)." Supposedly, they tried to get Peter Graves, the original Phelps, to reprise his role for the movie but he turned it down because they wrote Phelps as the bad guy. Ultimately, even though it wasn't nearly as action-packed as any of those after it, it still accomplished what it set out to do: transition Mission: Impossible from "classic TV series mostly remembered for its music" to "contemporary movie series with high production values and even higher stakes stories."
Very rarely is there a movie where you can tell there's gonna be a sequel in the *middle* of the movie instead of at the end. The first Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie was one such film.
When they capture the bad dude , Hoffman rip, and are leaving on a boat away from the Vatican is one of my favorite shots of all time , in HD its a beautiful shot !
People love to shit on Cruise, somewhat deservedly, but these movies are just so freaking good. Can't wait to see the next one.
MI:2 will always be the coolest MI out there... the latest one (MI:6) comes a close second...
Nothing beats the original...
One of the best in the franchise. never get tired watching this all over again. RIP phillip seymour hoffman
I like MI2. It's unironically one of my favourite movies. And I've always liked it more than MI1.
One of my favorite action movies of all time. The opening scene gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it
Having only seen all the movies once each, I found 3 to be the most memorable honestly. Also, this movie introduces Benji so it’s automatically the best.
Gotta say, your M:I investigations are unmatched. HUGE fan of 'em. Looking way frwrd to more as the series continues. Good luck @ it
I just finished watching MI Fallout and I get recommended this... The TH-cam Gods are among us.
Yo I feel like you have been CRANKING out a ton of great content lately and I've been enjoying all of it. Keep it up. ✌️
Btw, love MI3. It was actually the first MI movie that I saw when I was a teenager and was obviously the perfect introduction to what the franchise would become. Certainly underrated in my opinion and I'm glad you're giving it some love!
MI3 will always be my favourite. The villan was so good, suspense was amazing. And action was insanity.
I got into this series for Dead Reckoning Part 1 and I’ve had a blast watching the movies, nice to see this film save the franchise and give us a great streak of entertaining fun action movies.
Here before the obligatory title change that happens with every single Nerstalgic video....
For me, MI3 is the best and most memorable one. I could hardly remember the plot of the other movies, but I can always remember the story in this one.
It wasn't the dove in MI 2? Cause that shit was magical.
Nah MI2 made big money and has awesome stunts. Doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Don't get me wrong I love MI3 as well.
I remember Ethan taking about traffic and its ebb and flows
EDIT: Oh man, im honestly shocked at how many people actually seem to like MI 2, i never would’ve thought anyone really did like it, most people see it as oh yeah that dumb one with motorbikes and shit, but judging by how many likes this got, its not the case, MI 2 is absolutely amazing, and alot of people don’t give it enough credit.
finally someone defends MI-2…
love that movie… along with MI-4 my favourite.
I loved 2 too
yeh Mi3 is just JJ Abrams being JJ Abrams, a lot of frantic crap you can't remember anymore. Like Lost.
MI3 is my favourite but I do think MI2 and MI3 are generally the most underrated.
3 was always my favorite. The most intense and the stakes were super high. It also had an emotional impact
First! Also, I get so excited every time I see a new nerdstalgic vid
Thanks for being a true fan
Great video, well observed and nicely compiled, well done and thank you.
Best Mission Impossible by far...
MI: III is probably my 2nd favorite.
MI2 was the best.
The only thing keeping the fast and furious franchise alive... is family.
I loved this movie. Saw it when I was a kid with my dad and was blown away. When I heard all the bad reviews from nostalgic fans I was confused. Thank you for this video.
Every time this guy talks it feels like his about to burp
Yes!! YES!!!! Thank you for verbalizing how I feel as a mi3 apologist
I haven’t seen this one, only the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th
You're missing out
I saw only the first 2... But I have to be honest I don't remember what happened in those movies, because not every action franchise can be Dragon Ball.
Love it, couldn't agree more. Alias was the blueprint to make MI the movies they are today. Im so glad they went with the Alias style.
🤔 I just love Tom Cruise’s
movies 🍿 🎥..
I rewatched Transformers a while back. It isn't that bad. It falls apart near the third act, but overall it's decent.
Written by the same people who wrote this movie.
@@BirdsElopeWithTheSun09 oh yeah! Didn't think about that. When they were a duo, they wrote some great episodes of Alias.
Pretty sure MI3 was the first Mission Impossible movie I even saw... and I feel like that worked extremely well. I was connected to Ethan right away because I hadn't seen him any other way!
