I love hit locations. In fact, that is what drew me to RQ back in the early 80s.

Honestly it's hit location, blocking and dodging is what drew me to Runequest back in 1978. I wanted a more active combat. While DnD back then opened doors for tabletop rpg game play it was too stilted, rigid and lacked a fun fluidity that games like Runequest and later on Pallidium Fantasy rpg and then later GURPS had. So yeah I don't think it adds to much to add a hit locations or a active combat dodge/block system. It really enriched it in my opinion. I also prefer the skill based versus level based game mechanics as well. Good videos as an aside listening through them to see how someone new to the mechanics feels about it.

Sometimes it is great to sit back and play a simple mechanics system, but other times, I am looking for something that has depth and strategy. RQ is a perfect fit for that.

Thanks for the overview, RQ is certainly an interesting system with some unique features. On a separate note, I was surprised to hear that you didn't have much experience with d100 systems. For anyone interested in d100 based systems Call of Cthulhu, WFRP and Rolemaster all have a long history and are well supported with variants, supplements etc.

There is percentile dice that show 10 - 00. :)

The skill rule check is the number or less. Not less than the number FYI.

Hit location adds to the deadliness of RQ. It also promotes a mental picture of each wound. It has been a part of RQ from the beginning.
Hero quest is mythical! (It is also the name of another non RQ game based in Glorantha.) Promised in early RQ versions and never delivered, "Heroquesting" is when adventurers enter the myths and recreate certain aspects the deeds of their god/goddess. It is mystical like dream walking or becoming transcendental. Again, think bronze age, native American or Aboriginal traditions. I heard heroquesting is supposed to be better covered in an upcoming RQ GM guide. Until then, think about it as entering an alternative reality where the adventurers become very much like their gods and either re enact god's legendary feats or alter reality before returning to their "normal" existence.
The god Orlanth entered the underworld to bring Yelm, the sun, back from death and therefore end the long darkness in the myth of the lightbringers.

just bought the book today and am liking it so far but am not keen on the time in-game so far, if it was Elves or Dwarves would nt be a big deal but as humans, it's a bit tough if i run a game for a few months and years go by in-game.

Just remember, it's your game. You can change any rules as you see fit as long as everyone agrees! 🙂

So, maybe this is "breaking the rules" but my understanding (as a complete neophyte still) is that the rule for time passage is really meant to be used per-mission/story. I've played games that will (in the rules) assume that any given storyline/quest lasts for a single sessions. But in reality a single quest can take several sessions -- and it'd be weird if the characters are hot on the heals of a murderer or infiltrating a fortress, or what have you, and instead of it taking a few days, maybe a full week or two at the outside, a year or more passes. With unexplained leaps in time where things would have happened if the storyline was left unresolved as a season passes. And that gives players a bit more breathing room to inhabit the characters.

It's not anything immediate, but I've been keeping an eye out in regard to Runequest. As a setting I rather like it -- it's got the "bronze age" kind of setting I've been wanting to play/run since roughly around the time I first found my way to TTRPGs. I would most likely run it as-is, at least the first time (first "campaign") I run it. Because it's good to understand something in its vanilla state before you go tweaking -- _but_ ultimately I want something that feels more like the Greek city-states and the Mediterranean. Doesn't have to be 1:1 but closer than what I _think_ Runequest does as its default setting. Again, I'd try it vanilla first to see if maybe it does a better job of capturing than that I'm giving it credit.
My concern, though, is that it appears to be more crunchy and complex than I generally like in my TTRPGs. That said, I only just recently got around to experience Chaosium's other game: Call of Cthulhu. Yeah, I know, I'm really late to the party since I started with TTRPGs back in 2000 as a (technically) adult. Of course, CofC 7E has some really nice streamlined elements and innovations I'd think would be ported over to RQ, but aren't. Bonus dice. Hard/Extreme difficulty. 100-base attributes.
I _get_ Call of Cthulhu, even though I know there's still a whole lot for me to learn about that system. But RQ baffles me. Finally sitting down and playing it might change that, but so far... well, the magic system is really neat and I like it conceptually, but I can't wrap my heard around how it actually works except to notice that there are a few different kinds of magic -- Runes, Sorcery, Shamanism, and more.
Character creation by no means appears to be quick or easy. But it does look to be very deep in meaningful ways that would add lots of juicy depth to characters and intertwine them to the setting and with each others. It's an undertaking, but one I think would make for very engaging narratives.
So yes, I am very much interested. But I have some concerns about ease of learning and using the system (as well as learning the very rich mythology and cultures), especially when I've found a fantastic amount of slimmer narrative-focused systems that I truly have a lot of fun with. And I wonder how easily RQ could be made to use the improvements in CofC 7E over the seemingly less elegant system in RQ.

For those who have played both RQ and D&D, do you find the hit location aspect slows down combat? I'm currently designing a homebrew rules system drawing from both games but I have never played RQ. I want combat to feel fast and exciting but retain the gritty realism of hit locations if possible.

I like almost everything about RQ but those names for the days of the week sound really forced and artificial to me. I think naming them after a relevant elemental deity instead might have been better and more naturalistic.
Talking of names, is it just me or does the name of the continent 'Genertela' remind anyone else a certain part of anatomy?! Probably just me :D
