Love both Annie's and this version by John. I was going through some regrets one cloudy Saturday morning and was totally wasted and John came on the radio singing this. Still brings water to my eyes because this was the song that started me on the path to getting sober and it's been 11 years now.

John Boutte is the greatest vocalist on Earth. JB, "how many times" are you going to have to scratch for those opening lyrics...hah ha?. Nobody can move me like he does...a conveyer of the spirit and a heart that can make the clouds part y'all!

John said that he sees this song differently through the lens of his experience in Katrina - you can really hear his heart in this song.

Saw John in Brasil and twice at DBA on Frenchmen. My ex wife freaked when she saw him at DBA and sheepishly asked for a photo with him. He commented on how beautiful Dominican women were. Incredible voice. Incredible talent.

I saw John Boutte sing this song @ the 1st week of JazzFest in New Orleans Apr 2007. He was backed by the New Orleans Social Club. I had heard the song before, but could not recall who performed it. John is a talented vocalist who sings from the heart with a passion.
If you ever get a chance to see him, don't miss it...
and hope he sings this song...it will stir your soul!

I've been fortunate enough to experience that. My husband, two friends and I saw him at d.b.a. last year and we all agreed that it was one of those things we'll never forget. From my blog post about it:
In that moment everything fell away except for the pure joy of song.
One of my favorite lines in "Hallelujah" is:
"I'll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah"
And that's precisely what we did in that dark and crowded bar in New Orleans.

I remember hearing about this performance! It was said that John's spirit was so strong and his passion was so deep that the people in the crowd immediately began to cry....some even vomit! Truly a powerful artist!

I'm a new fan of Mr. Boutte...I recently finished watching season one of HBO's "Treme" on netflix and couldn't get the theme song, and it's singer, out of my mind..I love Mr. Bouttee's voice..Given that, I think everyone is missing the mark on this song "Why".Annie and John put their individual/unique stamp on this beautiful song. I love both versions..If you can find the clip, you should see Annie do this iive; she brought 1/2 the audiance to tears..But then again, "Why" is that kind of song
