Just got hired by the first FD i ever applied for!! Thanks to this playlist i was able to go in confident and knowing exactly why i want to be a firefighter. To be an example to the hispanic community that ANYONE can be a firefighter. Thank you
What would you recommend for an 18 year old that is just out of high school with not a lot of experience in career trades or other useful skills? I already have my Fire cert and am currently working on my EMT B as well.
Hey Nicholas, I would go to every volunteer fd in your area and apply. also i would go to every ems agency in your area and do the same once you get your emt b. I have a video on this channel that covers that, I believe its called How to Become A Firefighter
You said you work in Erie I’m assuming since you’re on Lake Erie. That’s where I’m from and have my written and physical test in warren. Former military and all this information is so helpful and I hope I can get the job!
@@realRXmack for testing for fire dept, study ems and fire questions and work on your fitness.(for texas we have to be emt basics and departments test you on that) Stairs and dragging stuff is what helped me personally. For interview i highly recommend practicing answers to common questions with family and friends. Be unique but honest with your answers they dont want no bs for honor or because its my dream job scriped answer they hear that from alot of people, make a honest answer thats unique to you, its ok to add in its your dream job but that cant be your only answer Its ok to be nervous, i was. I bombed my first interview.
For several reasons I would recommend trade school over Fire Science. I have a video planned on college degrees in general for firefighters but my short answer of your deciding between the two would definitely be trade school.
@@mike_pertz Why do you think trade school is better? Doesn't fire science provide more technical knowledge and emt training that will help you get on as a volunteer?
Would they ask this question after they’ve already ask you what your strengths are? My answers are the same for both. I suppose I would have to think of new answers.
@@mike_pertz It went very well for someone without the required certifications to be a fire fighter. I recently left active duty and I am neither EMT certified nor been through their fire academy. When I first heard of an opening I gave their human resources specialist a call. I explained my background and she recommended me to sign up for their Fire Academy and submit a resume; even without an EMT certification. They liked me enough to the point that the board placed me on their reserve hiring list. They want me to complete my EMT before they hire me. Honestly, I did not expect to get an interview without the certifications. Thanks to your videos, I was able to provide good examples to match their questions.
I got define diversity and the pros and cons of diversity. Then I also got define exclusion and the pros and cons of exclusion. I also got what does pride and loyalty mean to you. All three of these questions back to back. (Canadian Dept)

Congrats. Hoping to do the same. 32 years old, finally pursuing what I've wanted to do for a long time.
What would you recommend for someone who doesn't have any specific skills that aren't related to firefighting but want to do well in an interview?

Would administrative skills be worth bring up? Grant writing, reports, etc?
those could be helpful, especially grants for small departments that would be underfunded.
If my biggest weakness is talking to large groups of people should I say that when asked about strengths and weaknesses ?
I was thinking of taking the Fire Science program at the college near me. Do you think this is beneficial or would trade school be a better choice?

Ya they might, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have the same answer for a couple of questions
@@mike_pertz I'll try to create and rehearse some other answers to stay flexible. I have my interview next Wednesday. These videos are very helpful!
Sounds good! Good luck next Wednesday, let me know how it goes! Glad you find the videos helpful!

@@samgraham2110 That's awesome man, congratulations, and keep up the good work!
How would you answer a question about cultural diversity?
I’m not sure I understand your question. What type of question about cultural diversity?
What's the specific question
I got define diversity and the pros and cons of diversity.
